I was starting to get a handful of gold medals, and now I hear there are platinum medals if you really knock it out? I haven't touched any of those yet. 10 homers was a lot of fun. I can't remember if I hit all 30 in batting practice or not but that's a fun game too.

More recently I've been playing all VC games that don't require me to get up, but I think Wii Sports might be calling me again.

I'm starting to get curious about Excite Truck. It sounds fun if not very deep, and I really like the idea of making my own soundtrack, but I also think Sonic might be really good so I'll have a choice to make.

You can enjoy it as a kid goofing around or an adult taking the motions seriously.

My only concern is that the motion controls simply aren't sensitive enough to pick up very precise motions. Hopefully, Nintendo will come on with a more adult game with harder controls soon.*

I'm looking forward to getting the Sonic game next week. I decided to just wait and get that rather than waste (apparently) money on Wii Play. I'm so desperate for a new game, I still almost want it, despite all the terrible reviews. Anyway, has anyone heard anything about Sonic? It seems like it will be cool, but I read a few interviews with the creators and it seems like it started out as just another cynical money-grab (ie, they said that porting the PS3/X360 version to the Wii would have taken too long, so they decided a whole new game would be easier to do. That wouldn't necessarily worry me except for the fact that that game got devestatingly bad reviews, which makes me wonder why they would think anybody would want it ported to the Wii.). It seems like the people in control of Sonic don't care about actualy making a good or enjoyable game, but rather just care about attaching the Sonic name to as many things as possible and hoping that people with fond memories of previous games will give them their money. Obviously, everybody cares about money, but it's disappointing to see the difference between Sega and Nintendo on this. If you buy a Mario, Zelda, Metroid, or Pokemon game, you know that it will at least be well-made and entertaining. Nintendo cares about the long-term health of it's brands. Sega does not seem to.

I hope I'm just being pessimisticc though and the new Sonic will reverse a long trend of bad games.

I think you'd be surprised. It really has the ability to pick up tiny motions in the hand but games like wii sports tend to simplify that so the game is easier.

In playing Wii Play on fishing you can see how tilting your hand a fraction of an inch will drop the lure accordingly.

I'd love to see some actual data on the thing and how sensitive it is in tests. But, being able to read in X,Y, and Z and judge speed really could have some great applications.

Everything I have ever heard from friends or read on the net indicates that Excite Truck is a phenomenal rental and a disappointing purchase because it has very low replay value.

So, I stumbled on a wii and bought it for no particular reason. The wife and I weren't planing on getting one until Christmas, so I'm not sure what to do with this one. What is a wii actually worth on the open market these days? I noticed a few going for around $325 on Ebay, plus $30 shipping. Does that sound about right?

What to do.... what to do...

Well. if I can make $50 for waiting 8 months, I'm not sure why I shouldn't. I'm a patient man.

EDIT: The wife and I decided not to spend the money right now. I'd be willing to sell it for $300 (cost me $263 with tax) and I'm sure we can make an arrangement to avoid shipping if you live in the Fox valley area or Milwaukee. I'll be in Milwaukee (I live in Green Bay) for opening day, so I could drop it off then.

If anyone is interested, just PM me, please.

The consensus is that the LAN adaptor works much better, as I found out from my own research into the issue (I was looking into it for my brothers). The USB thing has a multitude of what seem like serious problems endemic to it (it overheats to the extent it can only be used for short times, it monopolizes your internet connection, it is low-powered, etc.).

On another note, my wife and I just picked up Cooking Mama for the Wii. Has anyone else played this? My wife is really loving it right now (she hasn't played this much of any game since Animal Crossing or maybe Mario Kart: Double Dash) and I think it's more fun than WarioWare (for example). The controls aren't perfect and the user interface could be a little better but it's pretty cool.

Thanks laserbomb, I was actually going to come back to this thread to ask about it. Could you gimme a little more info? Is it mostly linear or do you explore a lot? I heard that there's a ton of text to read, does that get annoying? Also, would it take a long time to beat or seem to have good replay value? I hate buying games that you beat in a weekend and never wanna play again.

On a side note, has anyone played TMNT? Seems like the kind of game that would either be awful or incredibly fun.

Let's see, I'd agree that all the text is probably the biggest drawback if you have to pick one, even though some of it's kind of amusing. If you ever played Trauma Center, it didn't aggravate me nearly as much as all the text in that did. If you make it through the big chunk in the beginning without feeling impatient, (that's the worst offender I've found so far, while they were setting the story up) you'll get to get into the fun pretty quickly after that.

In between worlds ("chapters") there are also scenes of text to click through. I guess one way to put it is, that kind of thing is about the exact opposite of what I like in a game, but for me it still doesn't drag anything down.

It almost feels like a Zelda game in some of those respects, and I never got into those. There's a lot of exploring to do, and sometimes people to go and talk to. My impression is it's a lot more linear than some of those, but within each section there's a lot of looking around and enough puzzle-type-things to keep things interesting.

Edit: also wanted to add that between chapters you return to a kind of home area where it's necessary to ramble around some more before diving back in. Helps tie everything together, and from there you can jump back into any level you've already beaten.

In some ways you kind of gradually ramp up into the gameplay and I think they do that well, too, by letting you get into it and then adding things as you go.

I don't want to overstate things because I'm still all into it, but it feels like it'll still be fun to go back to a lot of these levels and play them again. I wouldn't want anyone to hold me to anything about replay though, because tastes and playing speeds can be so different.

The graphics are fun, I'm not the best judge of how "good" they are but the style's different and interesting. And I think I put about 6 hours in already since yesterday, stayed up all night with a chunk of Godfather in the middle. That put me around the beginning of chapter 3 (of 7). I'm sure a lot of people could breeze through faster but I've been enjoying running around trying different things.

Um, I'm pretty much just scattering everything out here, probably way too much, sorry about that. I'd give it somewhere in the low to mid 9's out of 10, pretty much the ceiling I'd put on a game so early in the wii lifespan.

I just rented Super Papar Mario and the wife and I worked on it for a couple of hours together. It's actually a pretty cool game to work thourgh with someone else. There's enough puzzely action for the nonplayer to feel involved by giving suggestions. It's also neat to just watch, as the graphics are very pretty and odd in a good way. The 2D/3D thing doesn't seem gimmicky yet.

Alllllll the text gets old but at least some of it is cute and/or funny. I spent $8 renting this thinking banking on being able to both finish this thing in 5 days and it not having much replay value. 3 hours in and I'm only maybe 15% done, so I have a lot of work ahead of me. To be fair, some of that time is definitely just filler. As someone points out, sometimes you just run around in circles being instructed to go from point A to B and back. I guess that's how you make a 15 hour game into 25?

I have a question for all of you guys/gals that have played the Wii. If you had just one long weekend to play the Wii after never having played it before, which games would you recommend? I am going to be dogsitting next Thurs-Sun and I will have my first chance to play this system. I'm a huge Zelda fan and have been playing a lot of Twilight Princess for GameCube but don't think a weekend would be enough time. How is Tiger Woods? Any good baseball games? Do they have Mario Kart or anything similar? Lastly, does Blockbuster carry a lot of games for Wii? Thanks for any help/advice you guys can offer.

All I know about Wii is that it is an incredible workout - especially boxing.

So how would I actually go about getting a Wii? I am not a hardcore gamer and am not going to call 10 different stores everyday until I find one. But when I do call somewhere every once in awhile, I get the same answer...no Wii's, and we don't know when we're getting more. Shouldn't they have some in stock like 6 months after it was launched? I'm about ready to give up.

It worked like a charm for me. I got an alert that target had some in stock, called the store, and hurried over. That was a couple months ago.
