2011 Softball (roster discussion -- post #46; up to 12 guys! -- post #65)

radman12484

I think we can find 4-5 more by the time the season rolls around. It's probably tough now because it's still February but I have little doubt we can get a few more once it starts warming up.

Case in point: Larry (who played with us one game last year, with his brother) would be available to sub but can't commit at this point.

Is that the issue - bodies?
No issue. As I said in post #19, we have plenty of time to fill out the roster. Only the sponsor/co-sponsor idea needed to be figured out this soon because registration is now.

I'm planning to head down to the Rec Office tomorrow, it's the only day I'm available to do so before the deadline next week. I'll just go with the usual straight BF.net sponsorship on the registration and pay the initial $240 team fee. Player fees won't be due for a while and we'll lump it all together and square up later. The co-sponsor idea could live on with the prospect of new uniforms, perhaps....

  • 4 weeks later...

Had our manager's meeting tonight, I'll post the full schedule in a new thread but the good news is we start the year off in style against White House ... 6:30 game, so our game kicks off the league.

Other random FYIs...

- Arc limit for pitches is 6-12 ft. Apparently this is a rule change? They kept saying, "we're going back to 6-12 ft". If anyone knows how the rule differed last year, I'd be curious to know.

- Sounds like they're going to start doing some strict testing of bats in a few of the leagues this year -- coed and women's, I think. Some kind of physical test, like a compression test, then the bat gets an approval sticker and only then is it eligible for use in league play. I mention this because they claim they'll be doing this for all leagues next year. Probably a good thing.

- Our manager's packet came with an ASA team scorebook, so no need for anyone to get a team scorebook unless you think this one isn't good enough.

- Total fees for an individual player this year should be about $37. That's an estimate assuming a 13 man roster. ~37 = 18.46 share of team fee (240/13) + 3.46 share of game balls (45/13) + 15 player fee.

If anyone has any questions on rules ... metal spikes, bats, jewelry, alcohol, etc ... let me know, it should be in the material I have.

I heard something about the bats a few weeks ago from a buddy of mine who runs a City league team. City leagues were considering banning all composite bats and only allowing aluminum bats only starting next season. So maybe they are going in a different direction or trying something different first before they do that.

Just because I am a retired Brewerfan.net softball player, doesn't mean I still don't follow the team haha.

City and County are going back to 6-12 ft. for 2011 but the ASA standard says 6-10 ft. Last year some of the umpires were not on the same page with 10 ft. while others were still allowing 12 ft. and then some, so they said 12 ft. and nothing higher so we will see if it is strictly enforced.

As for the bat testing, it is my belief that City and County are going to go in together on a compression tester but it won't be here until the playoffs come around. It was going to be a rule that all bats used in City Power on Tuesdays and County Major on Wednesdays had to pass the compression test but with the purchase/delivery being delayed, I believe they stretched the rule to all teams qualifying for playoffs in Major, Power, Inseam, and Social leagues including co-ed and women's. All a compression test does is it tests the walls of the bat to make sure they do not exceed a certain amount of flex, if they do the bat is deemed illegal and cannot be used. Houlie's Worth Mutant would probably fail a compression test because it has like 4,000 swings.

Are metal spikes still allowed?
Apparently, yes.

------------- quote -------------

12. METAL SPIKES

Several questions have been asked regarding the use of metal spikes. The following information is provided to help clear up the confusion:

A. Metal spikes are legal in municipal men's leagues & women's tournament leagues. However, soft molded-type cleats are recommended.

B. Men's affiliated leagues that do not allow metal spikes will specify that under Special League Rules on the back of their season schedule.

C. Metal spikes are not allowed in any women's social or coed leagues.

I can get the F4 at around $230 @ Dunn's or Dick's. I'd pay half if others want to chip in for a team bat. I wouldn't use it any other time besides for our team. That's why I wanted to throw the idea out there.

My previous softball team pitched in to get the F3 when it came out, very nice bat, good pop.

Here are the specs on the F4:

Fiercelyl Ahead of the Game

It's the world's most technologically-advanced aluminum

composite hybrid. SC4 alloy combined with the patented DeMarini

Doublewall design creates the thinnest and strongest aluminum walls in

the game (12% stronger to be exact). With an all-new C6 composite handle

employing a wider composite weave, flex is optimized and performance

maximized, giving this bat game-changing power.

Approved Associations: ASA, USSSA, NSA, ISA

Nevermind about the team bat. I'm sure most of you already have bats, except me. But I did go out and buy a cheap DeMarini Bruiser, my first softball bat purchase. Looking forward to beating the crap out of it.

At the social gathering, we'll hopefully hammer out a near-final roster. Here's how I see it right now.

Definitely in:

01. Radman

02. Drick

03. Nullbyte

04. Houlie

05. Beeks

06. Valpo

07. FireNick

08. Recte

Probably in, but do we know for sure?

08. Andy //Houle mentioned him on page 1

09. Tyler //Houle said Tyler confirmed via text message?

10. (11.?) Mystery dude(s) //Houle texted me saying he had two more guys for the team, not sure if one was already Andy from page 1?

Also mentioned:

11/12. Nullbyte brother?

12/13. Nullbyte's "big masher 1B" dude?

Am I missing anyone? It'd be best if the non-definite's could create BF.NET forum accounts and post here, but I guess it's not really a big deal. Once the weather turns and we start having practices we'll really be able to gauge who's in and committed. Just hate to not have enough guys if people flake out....

I know two guys (Andy and Tyler) that will definitely play. I was waiting for word that they could definitely play before having them create names on here or telling them anything more. Also Tyler from the team last year told me he is returning as well. I'll talk try to get a hold of him tomorrow to confirm this once again.

UPDATE on the roster situation. Houlie has informed me that the few guys he thought were in aren't playing afterall. On the positive side, if any of you were on the team a few years ago and remember my friend Matt who played with us (pitched and played SS ... screenname of BrewerfanMatt, I think), I talked to him and he's definitely in. I've refreshed the roster list below.

01. Radman

02. Drick

03. Nullbyte

04. Houlie

05. Beeks

06. Valpo

07. FireNick

08. Recte

09. Matt / Schubert / BrewerfanMatt

Probably in, but do we know for sure?

10. Razzer's cousin Tyler

Also mentioned:

11. Houlie mentioned his friend Al, he's subbed for us a few times, seems like a good guy and a good player

12. Nullbyte's brother Dan?

13. Nullbyte's "big masher 1B" dude?

We didn't have a huge turnout at Club Paragon, I was hoping to touch base with Nullbyte about his two dudes and also meet Recte and confirm that he's in for sure. We'll have to start getting a few more confirmations on our "maybes" soon and/or start looking for a couple more guys.

Can we get together Saturday at Field of Dreams or something? I've gone the past couple Saturdays around 10:30 and we could have the backroom cage all to ourselves.
