SD signs Brad Hawpe to 1-yr. deal

The San Diego Padres have agreed to terms of a one-year contract with

Brad Hawpe to play first base, two people with knowledge of the deal

told The Associated Press on Friday.

For a 1-yr. deal as a first baseman, I can't imagine the Pads had to spend too much.

No, but a great signing for them. I'd guess it'd be for 1 year 3 million or so with incentives.

 

You had a contender last year and traded away Agon, might as well take a shot and hope Hawpe, who won't kill you at 1st can bounce back.

I agree that's a solid signing assuming the got Hawpe pretty cheap

 

His numbers over his career in Colorado aren't overly Coors Field influenced, but i've read that he was a terrible defensive outfielder. How his defense will end up panning out at first base will factor in to how effective Hawpe is overall for the Padres. Only a year ago though, Hawpe did post a .903 OPS and .917 on the road, so he wasn't a Coors Field wonder.

Yep, his .839 career road OPS indicates that he's a legit hitter. For a team without much of a budget, this is a solid signing as long as the price is reasonable.

If the market holds like this next year, it's a good sign for the Brewers there will be adequate reasonably priced replacements for Prince that could limit the drop off.

Great move for the Rays, extra supplemental round pick for them. Dang I would love to be a Rays fan this Draft season with all the picks they are going to get.
