Alternatives for shortstop?

Going off of southpaw's post, I still like the idea of Brendan Ryan as a stopgap. He's under team control through 2013, & already signed for '12 at $1.75M base (PA incentives could push it to $2.5M).

He would not only upgrade a weakness this season, but also buy the Brewers some time to draft & develop or trade for a longer-term solution.

Absoultely second this idea. Once JJ was off the market, Ryan became the best option. I just wish I was hearing more about the Brewers going after him. Firmly believe he is the best option for this team not only in 2011 but also 2012 and possibly 2013. Square away that D up the middle and see what that does for this team.

The Mariners really have no incentive to move him, though, for all the reason he's an attractive option http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That'd be my guess as to why more about him hasn't been floating around.

I figured that 17 game losing streak might convince them to blow it all up and start over. Anyone with value not named Smoak, Pineda, Ackley or Felix should be up for grabs if I were Jack Z. Ryan would be a perfect sell high candidate in my opinion.

I doubt it... they had a good year two seasons ago and he is a former exec of the year. That said, I would hope the Brewers would instantly give him his old job back if the M's were dumb enough to fire him.

Dumb enough to fire him. His team has been terrible two years in a row and they look like they are getting worse. Maybe he is rebuilding that farm system but two years as one of the if not the worst team in baseball will lead to getting fired

Sure, but my point is that Ryan is cheap, plays good defense, & is under team salary control for the next two seasons. And the market is thin for shortstops, so unless they can find someone to overpay somewhat, they can easily just say "no thanks" & keep him. They have all the leverage, unlike, say, the Dodgers & Furcal/Carroll.
