Alternatives for shortstop?

Done. Counsell's grades seem particularly harsh. I think you could safely inflate each guy's overall grade by 10 points & probably have that be more realistic. Obviously that's incredibly scientific & reliable.

Melvin asked for Betancourt in the deal because he didn't want to scour the market. He's not going to go out and spend more on another one. Get used to it, Betancourt is the SS.
That's what he said anyway. I have a hard time believing that Melvin and company looked at Betancourt and the $3M they would owe him this year and say, "we can't find better than this" on the open market. Betancourt doesn't do one thing well and he's overpaid. There are half a dozen guys out there that can at least give above average defense with the equivalent of Betancourt's bat. Melvin was probably forced to take on Betancourt, but he can't come out and say "we would have preferred to just take on Greinke, but the Royals required us to take Yuni and his contract too."

That being said, I don't think there will be room in the budget for the Brewers to just pay Yuni $3M to leave and go sign another SS for $3-5M. So yes, get used to seeing Betancourt getting significant PT at SS for the time being.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I would maybe give the Mets a call and see what it would take to get Jose Reyes. If healthy he would be a lead-off option. I just don't no if we would have the pieces to make a deal work. Some Brewers fans may not like this idea, but if we are going all in this year I would take a chance on a guy that can be a beast and use an old reliable in Counsell as my fall back option. I think that if he panned out he would be worth the risk and fill a need.

Betancourt costs us $1M this year and then $2M next year(to not be on the team) so I could see him saying that was worth it. I don't agree with him but I could see it at least.
The Royals are actually paying that buyout.

  • 08:$1.25M 09:$2M, 10:$3M, 11:$4M, 12:$6M club option ($2M buyout)
  • acquired
by Kansas City in trade from Seattle 7/10/09 (Seattle to pay all of
    2009 salary, $1M of 2010 salary, $1M of 2011 salary)

So it appears to me we are paying him $3 million this season and zero next year.

I wonder if Melvin is just deciding to sit with Betancourt and Counsell this year, and then go after a free agent SS next year. Reyes, Rollins, Bartlett, and Infante are all free agents after this year. Possibly Scutaro as well if his option isn't picked up.

Tony Sweet, I'd love to get Reyes. I am guessing Reyes for Randy Wolf would interest them. That would mean we'd have to resign and be able to count on Cappy.

Would Reyes and a rotation subbing in Cappy for Wolf leave you more confident than Betencourt at short with Wolf in our rotation? This is assuming a straight up Reyes for Wolf trade would work...

It sucks that we were likely forced to take on Betancourt in this deal.

We weren't. Doug said that on the radio today.

What he says to the public and what is the truth are two different things. The $2 million we got is obviously for the buyout next year. That tells me that he's here for a year because we have no other choice, and then he's gone.

Yeah, there's way too much taking Doug-speak at higher than it's worth going on here. He's notorious for being misleading in the press.

After all, do you really expect him to admit publicly that he was forced to take back a player that is currently still on the team? That'd be just terrible PR and professionalism.

Wow, we are finally going to have a rotation to be excited about and some want to start trading pieces away. I am not excited about SS or CF either but I am not down on them enough to start trading away Starting pitching. There is plenty of time to pick up alternatives before the season starts, lets not do something foolish.

Ha ha. No, I did not mean blue font. But I also don't know Reyes' situation. Probably should have just kept my mouth shut on that potential offer. While it won't happen anyway, I guess a part of me A) always liked Reyes B) hates our current SS situation C) remembers Wolf's first half D) thinks Wolf's value to this team is not as high as it was a couple weeks ago. Combining all of these factors, I just thought I'd throw this hyporthetical out there.

Granted, going for it now throws a few budgetary constraints out the window, but can someone throw a few payroll numbers up here so we can gauge how much we might actually be able to spend to shore up SS?

Thx

Any chance the Dodgers might be willing to deal Rafael Furcal? I would doubt it but it might make some sense. They could cut cost's a little bit and they do have a really nice SS prospect in Dee Gordon coming up. It's probably half a season to early to be talking about the Dodgers trading Furcal but it may be doable, plus he would be much cheaper to acquire than a Jose Reyes who was also brought up here as a potential trade target.

Tim, I like Furcal. He's a very good player. The problem is he is going to make $12 million in 2011, and also has a club option for the same amount in 2012 (apparently kicks in if he makes 600 PAs). I don't think the Brewers can afford that and I'm not sure we have another player we could send with a contract that could evenly partly even that out.

Jeff Suppan! Oh, wait... weird feeling... an offseason without discussing Suppan's contract dragging us down... its ... wonderful!

I like Ivan DeJesus of the Dodgers. Not sure if he projects more as a SS or a 2B though. Not a great hitter, but I believe he has a good glove. Not sure the Dodgers would be willing to move him either.
Didn't the Phillies give up Sandberg and Bowa for him? Must be a stud.

Is this Ivan DeJesus, Jr.? I would guess so, because that's a pretty cool and uncommon name. I used to love getting his baseball card back in the day.
