Mike Cameron

I'm certainly not the person that came up with this idea after the Greinke trade, but dagnabbit, I'll be the one to start the thread.

His 2011 contract is for $7.25M, and I can't imagine he'd be too expensive to pry away from Boston at this point. I certainly wouldn't count on him being able to make more than maybe 125 starts, but I'd feel quite comfortable about a big-league outfield of Cam/Braun/Hart/Gomez/Dickerson.

Considering the Brewers took on cash as part of the deal for Greinke, I can't imagine there's much more wiggle room in the payroll. I would absolutely love to have Cam back - one of my favorite players - but I think the Brewers are prepared to start Gomez/Dickerson out there and focus on trying to improve at SS.

I'm fine with Gomez in CF - as long as he continues to play good defense, I can live with him out there. SS on the other hand.............. hopefully we sign Renteria, don't like the idea of Betancourt out there every day.

I don't think that Chris Dickerson can be the starting center fielder on a good team. I'm not sure what people like about him, but from what I saw last year, I'm not even sure he's 5th outfielder caliber. As for Cameron, admittedly he wasn't my favorite player while he was here, and he's pretty expensive, I wonder if Boston would do something involving LaTroy Hawkins with some cash coming back for him. I might be in then.

I'd actually prefer bringing Edmonds back if his body could handle playing center again a few times a week. Apparently he is still open to playing, and though he's very old, I thought that he did a great job last season and he'd be a solid lefty stick off the bench. Plus, he wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. As for the starter, I think that you have to give Gomez one more chance. Maybe a better manager will get something out of him.

And most people are looking at what Dickerson projects and what he did over his career than 100 PAs late last year.

That's what people said about Kevin Mench after his first few months as a Brewer. Did Dickerson even hit a ball hard last year? I can't remember him doing so, and I'm not exaggerating. I'd be willing to throw out last season, if you throw out his rookie season in which he hit well. Looking at 2009, 2 HR in 299 AB, with many of them at bats in Great America Park does not do the trick for me. As for OPS- in his case which would be dependent on drawing walks (his only 'strength) last year he walked at the Shawnon Dunston-eque pace of 6 times in 106 PA.

The CF to whom the Rangers gave the most PAs last season posted an OPS+ of 74. The Giants got an OPS+ of 81 from their RFs last season.

Dickerson has hit .267 / .356 / .403 / .759 in 527 major league plate appearances. We would have been thrilled with that line out of Cain. He also plays average defense at worst.

I make Dickerson the starter, slot Gomez as the #5 OF, and bring in another OF to compete with Boggs for the other backup OF spot. I'm comfortable with that.

We can agree to disagree..... but to me, Chris Dickerson is the third Mouton.

I can't agree to disagree with you that "Chris Dickerson [can't] be the starting CF on a good team". It's not true, whether you like him or not.

I thought the same thing after hearing about the Greinke trade. I'd love to have him back, but not if we have to pay all of his salary. I don't think there's room to take on much more money now, but he sure would be nice to have in CF - even though he's a little older than when he left. He's also a little more injury prone because of that, I'm sure. The Red Sox find him expendable now, so maybe we could get him for very little. If that's the case, go for it. Why stop now?

I would rather have Gomez at 1.5 mill than Cameron at 7 million....heck I would rather have Gomez over Cameron at any price.
Why on earth would anybody want Gomez over Cameron? I am sorry but Gomez over Cameron at any price is crazy talk.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Whoops. Let me clarify, I meant to say 'on a good team in major league baseball'. I'm sure Dickerson would fit just fine on a solid American Association squad.

You just didn't even read my initial response to you, did you?
I did. Your argument using the low OPS of 'starting' outfielders from the World Series teams right? I think that penciling in Dickerson for an OPS of even 74 is taking somewhat of a leap of faith. He's that bad. I see no upside, and he is one of the oldest position players that the Brewers have, what am I missing on this guy? I'd rather give Gomez a chance to play everyday and twice on Sunday.

What am I missing on this guy?

His career major league (527 PA) line of .267 / .356 / .403 / .759

His career Triple-A (900 PA) line of .282 / .382 / .471 / .853

Nobody's calling him a potential All-Star, but nothing tells me this guy isn't capable of at least .730-.750 OPS that's shaded a tick towards OBP.

...he is one of the oldest position players that the Brewers have

He'll be 29 on April 10. Yeah, he's not a prospect, but we aren't banking on improvement (see above stat lines). He just can't get worse, and guys don't tend to get worse at age 29.

Well, since you've put so much careful analysis into it...
