True Grit (2010)

RobertR

I have a review elsewhere, but I can't recommend the Coens' latest movie enough. I think it's a flat out masterpiece that stands side by side with the giants of the genre. And we get to see a warm, fuzzy side of the Coens that I don't believe we've ever really seen before. Admittedly, in between gun fights, stylized dialogue, and some black humor. And there's at the center of it one of the best child performances ever.

Honestly I think it would detract. If anything, the Coens have made a movie the whole family can see. Really. It could even be called heartwarming and earnest. Yes, from the Coens. I'm shocked too. And very pleasantly surprised.

I have a review elsewhere...

Link? (or is that not allowed for some reason?) I've been intrigued by this one, despite never having seen the previous version. The first ads made the film seem very serious but the new batch does seem to show a more comedic/light-hearted side of the movie. Are those aspects well-balanced? Because the latest ads have put me off a little with their tone.

I have a full review over at Al's Ramblings. But, overall, the Coens are masters of tone. It's generally serious, but well seasoned with the Coens humor. Especially in dialogue.

dadofandrew[/b]]Robert's reviews add some class to Ramblings, though it does not take much, considering my love of Cops and Married with Children.
I'll never understand why Cops got such a bad rap. I love Cops.

I have always been a pretty big fan of Coen Bros. movies. Fargo might be my favorite movie (Raising AZ is not far behind). I really like that this not an R movie and that it sounds like it would be pretty safe for my 12 year old son to see.

My favorite Cops quote:

"I swear to God, it's not mine!"

Which episode?

Every episode.

A comedian said once that he's always shocked that there are guys sitting in their kitchen at 3AM, no shirt on, beer in one hand, cigarette in the other, and they're not the least bit surprised to see the police walk in. I gotta agree.

Saw True Grit last night. I enjoyed it for the most part. Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges were fantastic. The dialogue was what you'd expect from a Coen brothers movie. I didn't understand the need of the ending and wished the movie had ended differently or simply 5 minutes earlier. All in all, very entertaining though.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I prefer the ending of the original version. This was sposed to be truer to the novel i guess.

The original dialog is also funnier. They did much better with this version than I expected but the original is better. The one true upgrade is Damon as LaBeffe. He is a much better character than Glen Campbell was. Matt may have been a bit too old for the part though. It is meant to be played by a late teen early twenties actor. Then the stealing a kiss line is much less creepy.

Overall it was really good and all 4 people that went with me enjoyed it.
