General Lineup Discussion: 2011

brewtank34

*Small Sample Alert* But in the past 30 days here are some lines

AB / AVG / OBP / SLG

JHJ - 71 / .324 / .377 / .394

Yuni - 108 / .231 / .243 /.361

Casey - 93 / .258 / .333 / .516

Wilson - 21 / .143 / .217 / .143

Green - 1 / 1.000 / 1.000 / 1.000 - http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I don't see why Yuni has entered Braun / Fielder territory where he is an automatic start - without question. One would think JHJ and even Green would be able to find a few more starts why Weeks is out. What is wrong with JHJ at SS and Green at 2B? Why not just give it a try?

Starting tomorrow, how about:

1. Hart, RF

2. Morgan, CF

3. Braun, LF

4. Fielder, 1B

5. Lucroy, C

6. Green, 2B

7. Hairston, SS

8. McGehee, 3B

then when Weeks returns:

1. Hart, RF

2. Morgan, CF

3. Braun, LF

4. Fielder, 1B

5. Weeks, 2B

6. Green, 3B

7. Lucroy, C

8. Hairston, SS

Those look more like the lineups of a contender.

This looks very good to me, but then again you could have put "8. Chair, SS" and I would think it would look good. Chair wouldn't throw the ball away, wouldn't swing at bad pitches, wouldn't hit a pop up with guys in scoring position, and with a gust of wind may actually dive to its right.

I bet RRR starts McGehee the first game. I think he'll 'go with the guys who got them there' - and give Casey one last chance to pull something out of his butt. Then if casey plays poorly, Hairston takes over.

I agree with you, but I don't agree with RR. An 0 for 4 in the six hole with 5 LOB could cost us the game. Casey has been horrible and doesn't deserve to play period. This one game in a short series is huge and RR should play it like its the last.

Interesting comments over on Diamondbacks Bullpen. Here's a snippet from their In Game Thread.
One aspect of these two teams that hasn't been discussed is the pretty big gap between the quality of their bench players vs. our bench players.
I found it funny, when we have complained about our lack of a quality bench all year. I would guess that no one thinks they have good bench players.

Neither team has really used its bench. Since the comment was late in the thread, maybe it was referring to yesterday's ninth inning defensive move which put Gomez in center and Morgan in right.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Gomez is just as bad a hitter as Yuni and Casey, there is no reason to put an inferior defensive player on the field. Hairston should be at 3B or SS.

With Weeks' struggles at the plate during the NLDS, should Roenicke run out this lineup for Friday?

RF - Hart
CF - Morgan
LF - Braun
1B - Fielder
3B - Hairston
2B - Weeks
SS - Betancourt
C - Lucroy
P - Gallardo

At this point, there needs to be someone who productively puts the ball in play at the #5 spot in the lineup. Right now, that is the hole in the lineup, as it has been most of the year. The top of the order is getting on, but they're not getting in, except for the big 6th-inning rally in Game 2 against Ziegler. (Even in that inning, Weeks made both the 1st and 3rd out.)

Hairston currently looks to be the best guy to fill the #5 hitter role: not looking for home runs from JHJ, but looking for singles and doubles in the gap to move the runners around the bases.

Moving Weeks down to #6 takes a bit of pressure off of him to knock runs in. Instead, Weeks could focus on getting on base. Right now, I might even consider having Weeks hit #7, behind Betancourt.

I like these lineups going forward:

vs. righties:

1. Rickie Weeks

2. Nyjer Morgan

3. Ryan Braun

4. Prince Fielder

5. Corey Hart (situational start for Kotsay)

6. Jerry Hairston Jr.

7. Yuniesky Betancourt (situational start for Green)

8. Jonathan Lucroy (situational start for Kottaras)

vs. lefties:

1. Rickie Weeks

2. Jerry Hairston Jr.

3. Corey Hart

4. Ryan Braun

5. Prince Fielder

6. Jonathan Lucroy

7. Carlos Gomez

8. Yuniesky Betancourt

I hardly think the lineup or certain aspects of it are working so well that no alterations whatsoever are warranted.

Ummm...no. Hart has been solid in the leadoff spot, no reason to take him out of it. Braun and Fielder need to hit 3-4. Betancourt actually hasn't been that bad. I'd rather have Lucroy or Gomez in the 8 hole. The only lineup change I'd consider is having Hairston hit 2nd against both RHP and LHP. Then just have Gomez/Morgan in the 7 or 8 hole.

Hart is in a huge slump right now ... and it takes him a while to get out of these. When he aint right, he aint right. He might not get a hit for the rest of the series. I think I would go:

1. Morgan - RF (Not that he is doing better then Hart but at this point I think you just play the platoon)

2. Jerry

3. Braun

4. Fielder

5. Weeks

6. Yuni

7. Gomez - CF

8. Lucroy

It's time to bench Weeks. He is obviously not 100% and is a major liability defensively. He approaches his at bats like a slow pitch softball player would: Swing as hard as you can, try to pull everything and hope it goes far. He provide no protection whatsoever for Fielder and it seems like Fielder has been expanding his strike zone lately. I don't know if it's just because of Weeks but I'm sure it doesn't help. Hairston to second and either McGehee or Green to third.

I also think you need to platoon Hart. He's not having a good post season either. He has been terrible defensively and his misplay of the ball in game 3 may have lost them the game. He's not getting on base like a lead off hitter should be and he has shown zero strike zone discipline. Kotsay is probably worse in right field, but I don't going from bad to worse is that much of an issue. If someone isn't going to catch the ball, what difference does it make who it is? At least Kotsay has been getting on base. This team just frustrates me to no end.

He was. 2 of those hits came after my post though. And even with those 3 hits, his OBP is still .275 in the post season. Weeks, meanwhile, is down to a .135 BA and a .220 OBP. These are two of our first five hitters we are talking about.

Weeks has had 4 errors in 10 playoff games and that doesn't include the dropped ball last night that led to a run. As bad as the rest of the team has been defensively, they have a combined 5. Its just not ok. A few of them were clearly mental issues too. I don't know why he ruched the throw last night. Pujols was still several steps away.
