Joe Blanton

I guess one way to look at it would be: Would you rather have Yo, Marcum, Garza, Wolf, Narveson, but not have Axford or Gamel, or have Yo, Marcum, Wolf, Blanton, Narveson while retaining Axford and Gamel? (stealing that possibility from And That's "would you trade Axford" thread).
How about both! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. Take Blanton and his salary for some mid-level prospects. Deal Axford, Gamel and Narveson for Shields. Of the two options I'd still rather have Garza and lose Axford and Gamel.

Garza/Shields, Yo, Marcum, Wolf, Blanton... Yeah, I think I'd take that rotation.

No way would I give up any valuable piece (like Hart) for Blanton unless the Phillies were willing to pretty much eat his entire salary, which will never happen. The only move that would make sense to me would be a LaTroy Hawkins + minor league filler(s) for Blanton. This would allow the Brewers to shed Hawkins' salary, while still allowing the Phillies to shed some salary. This would only leave them on the hook for an extra $4 million in payroll in 2011 and $8 million in 2012.

I am not sure about Hawkins. If he bounces back, he's a darn good bullpen arm. I am also wondering if we need his leadership and experience back there given how young we are going to be in the bullpen. Axford, Braddock, Loe, McClendon, Parra, maybe Narveson....you get my drift. It might be better for us to keep Hawkins (not at the expense of not getting Blanton, but maybe this is the wrong year to "dump" a guy like Hawkins' contract). It might be wise to seek another way of making a Blanton trade fit.
