I suspect a guy like Blanton, or Kevin Slowey, will be the type of pitcher the Brewers add at this point.

Since this player would be slotted as their number 4 starter, that's ok with me. I'd rather make a move like that than count on a guy like Harden or Webb to stay in one piece.

If the Brewers can get a guy like Blanton without overpaying I'd like to see it.

If the Brewers are truly "going for it" this year then I do not want anything to do with Blanton. The Phillies are easily the favorites to win the NL & the World Series so why should the Brewers help them shed salary?

It does smack a little of Sal Bando playing the Waste Management role in taking Grissom off the Indians' hands, to free up cash and center field for them to sign Lofton way back when. That said, I would be somewhat interested only if the Phillies were willing to either pay a big chunk of the $16 million owed Blanton, or take Hawkins back in the deal..... at this point, he's the only true 'garbage deal' that the Brewers are saddled with. If he's due to make $4 million next season, not signing Counsell and Capuano would almost square up what is owed Blanton's deal. Perhaps the Phillies would kick in a little cash as well if the Brewers threw in a couple of middle of the road prospects.

All that said, I see Blanton as a #4/#5 starter, nothing more, nothing less. Basically a durable guy, with limited upside, but probably a better- and definitely a cheaper (if the Phillies would kick in some salary relief in the form of taking Hawkins, etc.)- option than Pavano. As I said above, he might not be a bad Plan C in the liklihood that Greinke and Garza are pipe dreams. There are also a few other guys (Harden, Duchscherer) that I would like to see them kick the tires on first, but you could do worse than Blanton as your #4 starter.

So because the Phillis staffis now loaded and before the season starts we are saying the brewers don't have a chance? I say if we get get Blanton it will give us another sold #3 and put us up their for the Central title
Yeah, I wouldn't cry too much over "only" seeing the Brewers win a division title next year. Just making the playoffs again would be huge for this franchise. And anything can happen once you're in.

I guess I don't get why people here are down on Joe Blanton. Is he a #1/2? No. But he's probably a very solid #4. Blanton's contract really isn't that bad either (from Cot's):

11:$8.5M, 12:$8.5M

I'd rather have 2 years of Blanton than 3 of Pavano. But I'd really like to have somebody better and 0 of both. But maybe that's being unrealistic.
That's my whole point. Yes, I'd love to see Greinke or Garza in a Brewers uniform as well. I am not sure either is realistically an option for the Brewers at this point. Greinke seems to be a pipe dream, and its seeming less and less likely that the Brewers match up with the Rays in a potential trade. Blanton is definitely better than Pavano, though.

Gallardo, Marcum, Wolf, Blanton, and Narveson isn't Halladay, Oswalt, Lee, Hamels, Kendrick or Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez, Lincicum, Zito but we're talking about maybe a staff that's in the 6th-9th range in the NL and that's quite an improvement from 14th.

Philly must have feared Blanton going to the Brewers or staying in the NL.

How would Daisuke look in the Brewer rotation?

Update, Gordon Eades is tweeting that a deal with Boston is "unlikely".

Ugh. A rotation of Gallardo/Marcum/Wolf/Blanton/Narveson isn't a playoff caliber rotation.

That group was a combined 61-42 last year. I would think if you're rotation is 19 games over .500 that it's playoff caliber. Obviously not in the same class as Giants or Phils but certainly competitive with the rest of the league.

My guess is Yankees have threatened to take case to Selig that Boston engaged in collusion with Phillies to block Lee to Yanks. That may prevent any Blanton to Red Sox deal.

Seems to me like they'd have a strong case. Red Sox obviously have no need for Blanton.
