As mentioned in the other thread, Seattle is actually paying 1 million of Betancourt's salary this year. Not sure how that works with the player traded to a third party team?

I think we had the exact same situation with Bill Hall last year, where we paid most of his salary directly to Boston after we traded him first to Seattle. The fact we were sending money to one of the "Haves" in baseball made my head hurt.

Al, if you are right, they may have some wiggle room to add some more payroll before the season after all.

Invader, I would assume any wiggle room would go to adding a pitcher/bat at the trade deadline. We know from past comments that Melvin budgets for in-season acquisitions. Some team might beg us to take a $10-20 million per year player off their payroll midseason.

Anyone know how much of Wolf's deferred salary from last year he gets this year? If its around $4 mil, that puts up back up to $86 and removes some of that wiggle room.

I assume the $4M is deferred until at least 2013, when the current deal is over. Otherwise it would not really be deferred, it'd just be less in '10, more in '11.

I think that makes the most sense. My understanding at the time was that they were trying to get their two pitchers onto the roster in a season with the dead weight hanging over them. After dumping Hall and Soups contracts they could pay it back. I don't know how they could put it off to 2013.

That would be interesting. We spent about 95 million last year and with the complete gutting of the farm system, we'll see where they are willing to go this year. I would think at least that high should the opportunity to add a player who could put us over the top arise.

Re: the Brewerfan salary page, normally by the time the 25-man roster is finalized, we know specific amounts for all the pre-arby guys, and we'll adjust from the generic $400,000 placeholder then. But the additional info is always appreciated.

contract incentives and call-ups from the minors, so club officials see

it as a $90 million payroll.

Not sure if the $90M number includes buyouts or not. Looks like I was pretty close, as were most others.

Some very interesting comments from Mr. Attanasio in there. I like his seemingly newfound philosophy of letting the talent dictate the payroll, and not setting a hard number to "shoot for" like in the past couple years.

I'm just curious if anybody has actually seen the numbers on this team. Owners often play the poor card even when their clubs are profitable.

Baseball teams don't disclose their revenues. A lot of it depends on how the accounting is done (amount of debt service, depreciation, etc).

It won't be if they can't win. If you lose a few million and win games, through, the appreciation of the franchise value, ability to negotiate higher media contracts, and sell tickets/raise prices, it will still be profitable.
