Gomez on the block

Thought about this over lunch, would either team be willing to do a Cain/Braddock for Jurrjens?

I struggled to answer whether or not I would do this, which tells me this may be a very fair deal. In the event the Brewers could pull this off, the supposedly never discussed deal of Loney/Broxton for Fielder may make more sense. I'm starting to think Melvin will be burning the lines to deal something other than Fielder to get SP. Once that occurs, meaning a Cain/Braddock for Jurrjens, Prince could then be dealt for hitting.

Apparently the Braves want to shed Kawakami's contract. Here's an idea:

Brewers receive: Kenshin Kawakami/Brandon Beachy

Braves receive: Carlos Gomez/Mitch Stetter

Brewers take on salary, but get two pitchers.

Straight up there's probably no way this happens - but if we take on salary....maybe someone would be interested.

Kawakami was okay in 2009. I haven't seen him pitch, so I don't know if that year was a fluke, but he would seem to be an option for the bullpen or even a starter if he can rebound. I just don't know which version of a pitcher he is - 2009 or 2010.

Beachy I only know by looking at stats - he mostly relieved in the minors, but he has some very good numbers. Even as a bullpen arm he might be interesting to have.

Of course, do the braves want Gomez? If they can save several million dollar perhaps.

I'd be happy getting Beachy for Gomez and Stetter. It might cost us Narveson or Parra instead of Stetter though. I'd "kick the tires" on that if I were Doug as well.

Why would the Braves trad a solid pitching prospect for a terrible player like Gomez and a loogy who struggled last year in AAA?

Maybe there still are teams out there who value the supposed upside of Gomez, but his stats have been incredibly consistent in a bad way. Not a shred of improvement in any aspect of his game and Gomez doesn't strike me as being able to change his mentality at the plate.

I'm not hugely excited, but I'd rather swap out Gomez and take on Kenshin then say shell out for Pavano. If we can't afford a way to get another really good pitcher we are going to need a couple of back end options, so we can cut a guy who just can't seem to get it going. That means having some competition with Cappy and Narveson. Both of whom could do OK, but I wouldn't be shocked if they really clunked out of the gate.

IMHO the Braves would leap at an offer of Gomez for Kawakami & $$$$$$ to the Brewers to offset some of KK's salary

KK is due $6,666,667 in 2011, the final year of his contract....lets say ATL sends $4 million in the deal
