SO now what does Melvin do to add that second starter.

Rogers really isn't that close. Sure he could be up in June or he could need a full season of AAA plus part of next year to get his command down. His BB/9 in AA was 5.56

Wouldn't this blow a rather substantial hole then in the "Rogers+Jeffress+Cain" trade?

If he's not close, and he's so wild, why would the Royals want him? For the record, I think the Royals hang up giggling after hearing that offer.

Because 1 year away is fine for the Royals if they get another guy they can show this year (Cain). Its not like the Royals have a shot at anything better than win 78

I was flat out in shock that the Brewers were even able to to get Marcum without having to give up any pitching in the trade. Doug Melvin did a very good job IMO.

A "thinking outside the box" idea might have Escobar being thrown out there. Maybe KC would be interested in Cain, Escobar, Jeffress, and Rivas for Greinke? Maybe you even dangle Lucroy?

I am just thinking of same names nobody mentioned here. Would it be better to hold onto our top pitching prospects or better to hold onto the Cain/Escobar/Lucroy triumvirate? That's something Doug maybe needs to weigh if he is still looking at a Greinke type.

I don't know what would stop Melvin from going all out to get Greinke. He's really got nothing to lose at this point. The only way we can compete and save his job is if we have pitching. Selling the farm system really doesn't matter to him at this point. He already started to show that by trading Lawrie. Might as well trade off some others to get Greinke. A rotation of Greinke, Gallardo, Marcum, Wolf, and Narveson would be near the top of the NL.

And then get JJ back to play SS! I'm all in! Notice that there is no blue font...

On a more real level, I have been thinking about this more and whether Escobar still has some real pop to his name when it comes to interest. I for one would not miss Escobar. I hope he proves me wrong but I think what we saw last year is what we'll get for his career more or less. Obviously I would have to see the deal but if adding Escobar to Prince could get Billingsley/Loney, I wouldn't flinch or lose any sleep over that.

He has pride in his job. And even if he does get fired, he will have plenty of opportunities to work in baseball beyond that, and he will be regarded better if he can tell his future employers that he will always do what is best for the team, rather than act completely out of self interest.

Trading Lawrie doesn't show anything. It just reinforces the fact that in order to get good players, you have to trade away good players.

Alright, I might be the only person that thinks this, but I actually hope Melvin is keeping Parra in mind as a possible 5th starter. Parra's FIP & xFIP numbers last season really weren't bad (4.50/3.95).

Obviously it would be much better to bring in another reliable SP via trade, but if the only alternative is spending millions of dollars to bring in reclamation projects like Bedard, Washburn, etc., I'd rather see Manny get another shot.

The mechanical tweak angle is what I'd be counting on. Clearly he needs to change something about his fastball, but with a new pitching coach to riff on it, I guess I can't stop being optimistic on Manny.

You aren't using his splits between reliever and starter.

Starter:

FIP - 5.24

xFIP - 4.34

Reliever:

FIP - 2.87

xFIP - 3.08

I agree with And That, his fastball is awful, -75 runs. He could have a ton of value to us in the bullpen though. He can go multiple innings, he has a good strikeout rate, his walk rate is better it sucks but he's best suited as a reliever.
