What would you want from Milwaukee?

theavrock

Ok guys there has to be somethings that I am missing here so I am reaching out to BF to help me out.

So I moved away from Milwaukee about a year and a half ago. I have a friend who is coming to our new city and offered to bring some things from MKE for us.

For some reason me and the lady are drawing a blank.

So far our list includes:

Alterra coffee
Riverwest Stein
and
Spotted Cow

What other Milwaukee/Wisconsin staples are we missing that can be transported across country?

i definitely miss all the Wisconsin cheese. i had the same problem as you once, Jim. i hadn't realized cheese spread was disallowed on planes.

the beer isn't a necessity, is it? i think there's something fun about discovering the good local breweries in a new town.

summer sausage and quality Racine kringel. and venison steaks.

i've found that the more i'm away from Wisconsin, the more i want sports merchandise like Brewers hats, Badger sweatshirts and the like. it's a bonus when you go to the bar when a big Badgers or Packers game is on tv, and by wearing the colours you end up meeting other people from Wisconsin. and pick up a Badgers bumper sticker or "W" for your rear window.

Any of the fine spirits from Great Lakes Distillery made right here in Milwaukee at 6th and Virginia:

Rehorst Gin

Rehorst Vodka

Rehorst Citrus and Honey Vodka

Roaring Dan's Rum

Seasonal Pumpkin Spirit

Kirschwasser (Cherry Brandy)

Grappa (Grape Brandy)

Absinthe (Green)

Absinthe (Red)

Everything but the Absinthe has Wisconsin ingredients in them, and they are all great. If you didn't have a chance to try it when you lived here, now is a great chance.

Awesome ideas thus far.

Can't believe I forgot Sprecher and the other assorted meats. Gosh and Stadium Sauce, woo hoo!

Game - trust me we have definitely found the local breweries! Still there I love me some Lakefront Brewery.

Ross - Love Rehorst. When I was a bartender in MKE I loved the Citrus and Honey vodka.

When my parents come down, we request Sprecher, cheese, and processed meats. Since they drive and thus have plenty of room, my dad also brings a case of Leinie's Original for good measure (we've been able to get most craft varieties here for about 4 years).

Also, brewery merchandise and Brewers stuff you can't get in your area - I typically get an assortment of Leinie's and Brewers paraphernalia for Christmas and birthdays. This year, we bought a new house with a big island/bar in the kitchen, and my mom is getting me awesome Leinie's barstools for Christmas.

Adam's ribs, don't forget the coleslaw. Wait..forget it...that's Chicago.

Real Chili.

Frozen Pizza with sausage (I'm not sure about all other states, but the last 3 places we vacationed as a family..AZ, FL, Myrtle Beach...we could not find this. Peperoni? - yes, Sausage? - no)

This is not really a Milwaukee thing, but when my Aunt and cousins use to visit in the 70's and 80's they would always stock up on powdered donuts. They were not available where they lived in Nova Scotia.

Frozen pizza would be awfully impractical to transport. A cooler isn't enough to keep it properly frozen. I think the only practical hope is to be traveling when the temperature is below zero. At that point, the pizza should stay frozen in the trunk (if the vehicle has a trunk).

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I traveled with frozen pizzas when I moved from Wisconsin out to Arizona 14 years ago. It traveled "okay" but only using ice cubes from the hotel each morning inside my cooler only sorta worked. The pizza ended up being pretty soggy. Edible, but soggy.

If I could do it over again, I'd have bought dry ice for the cooler.

I don't know about other states, but I imagine it's the same all over: people down here have no idea what cheese curds are. None whatsover. And they don't understand it when I explain what it is to them.

Yes, that's probably the one thing I miss from Wisconsin. But, there is a Culvers' and my friend who has connections in food things said that Culvers will sell you unfried curds, and there is also a grocery store that sells them, from what I've been told. I have to check it out. Otherwise, I may have to have some shipped for New Year's Day and my day of celebrating Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl!
