Javier Vazquez

TheCrew

Is seeking a 1 year deal - turned down a 2 year/$20 million deal - seems like he wants to prove he can still pitch at a high level next season and then cash in on one more big deal.

Guy has been great in the NL - haven't heard anything at all on Melvin showing interest though, anyone else hearing anything?

Wish we were hearing something . . . well, we are, but it doesn't seem to include the Brewers. Vazquez seems a "surer" than Pavano anyway, has a much better overall track record than Pavano, and the Gagne-esque safety net of the expectation of a one-year deal. I'm not down on Pavano. But I do think Vazquez is a better pitcher.

I'd have to believe this is the perfect situation for the Brewers. Rogers and Jeffress probably aren't quite ready yet for the Show and there is no guarantee Jeffress would be used as a starter anyways. Signing Vazquez to a 1 year deal where he would want to prove himself could theoretically bridge the gap to Rogers either at midseason where Vazquez could be traded or April 2012.

I agree that Vazquez would be a perfect fit, and not just because I've always liked the guy. He's only looking for a one-year deal, as he wants to re-establish his value on the market. That means he's going to be determined to improve, and as I've pointed out before, he seems to be better in odd-number years recently. I know others have mentioned that his velocity was down a few ticks this year, but I could see him performing a lot better in the NL, not to mention away from NY.

The Marlins supposedly are in on him, but it doesn't look as though they have the money as it stands right now to sign him, and they've already shed a significant chunk of payroll with their early trades so far.

I just feel a lot better about him for one year, bridging the gap another season, than giving a guy like Pavano or de la Rosa a 3-4 year deal in the $40-50 million range.

And it seems as though the Brewers have kicked the tires on just about every pitcher out there, so I would be surprised if they haven't done so with Vazquez.

All kind of red flags on Vazquez, not the least of which is that he allowed a whopping 32 HR in 157 innings last year. Another is that he's recorded ERA's under 4.42 only twice in the last 7 years.

No doubt he had a great year in 2009 for the Braves, even doing better on the road than in pitcher friendly Atlanta, but to say that he is an NL pitcher off that one year combined with what he did 8 years ago is a huge stretch.

He might be worthwhile for the right price, but there's a pretty decent chance he'd fail miserably too.

One thing the Brewers should nearly always be looking for are vets that want to sign one year deals to prove themselves. Then succeed, turn down arby and gain draft picks for the Brewers. Of course, only if it fits the team needs.

Not sure if Vasquez is that player, but he seems to make sense.
