Brewers in front with Nationals for Carl Pavano?

If he ends up being the 3rd or 4th starter, that wouldn't be too shabby. I'd rather have him as 4th starter and trade for someone else to be the 3rd starter.

4th starter? He sure as heck isn't going to get paid like one. He was the #2 on an AL playoff team last year. In a perfect world the Brewers would acquire an ace to go with Yo and you could slot 3 thru 5 as Pavano, Wolf, Narveson. But the more likely case if they sign Pavano is that he's the #2. Which isn't that bad since he did it in the tougher league.

I don't think it's a horrible idea, but you have to beware that he had an abnormally good season this past year. His WHIP and ERA were the lowest they've been since 2004. I could see giving him a two year deal, but no more. He's going to be 35 in January.

The problem is that there are no assurances, but IF (and that's a big "if") Pavano could get the results in 2011 that he did in '10, he'd represent a significant rotation upgrade over Bush & Parra.

I still think I'd rather have Vazquez, but you could do a whole lot worse than Pavano.

I agree - the problem is that he's going to get at least a 2-year deal, so he'd need to repeat those results for a few years in a row. I'm less optimistic about that.

FWIW, once he was traded to the Twins in '09, Pavano also pitched increasingly better as the season went on. I only mention that because his positive trend is more of a one-plus seasons thing, not only purely last season.

I've got very mixed feelings about this. I think Pavano might end up being a better signing than Wolf, but still another signing like this isn't something we need right now. I'd rather pick up a younger starter with some upside, or go after a guy that comes cheap with little to no risk.

I don't. This smells like a Suppan deal to me. He's fine as a 4 or 5 (at a lot less money and fewer years than he'll actually command), but if you're hoping for more than that then I fear you'll be disappointed

i'm starting to think the same thing. another "he's ok" starter that pitches like a #5 but we pay as if he was a #3. it's not just Suppan, but Looper, Doug Davis and first-half Randy Wolf. i guess i wouldn't mind Pavano on a two-year deal, but there will be enough teams after him that we won't be getting any bargain. i think i'd rather take my chances with both Jeffress and Rogers in the rotation even if one fails than a much more expensive Pavano, who it doesn't seem like will really out-produce either of them. i'm just not sure paying mid-level money for a mid-level rotation is the way to go, and maybe it might work best with a high-end 1 and 2, and a cheap-but-riskier back end. unless we give away the farm to get Greinke, i'm not sure Pavano in the rotation necessarily gives us an upgrade for the financial and injury risk that we'd be taking on.
