And now Notre Dame is getting waxed.

At least the Big Ten has Purdue.....oh, wait.

Not a good opening weekend for the Power Conferences. Mid-majors have 5 of the 16 teams in the next round - by my count at least

I think the fact that the BE got the 9th and 11th place teams to the sweet 16 is something. Top teams didn't do well but the lower teams did. That will happen in a tournament when matchups determine alot. But what it shows it how tough it was to win games in the conference. Some actually think Uconn has a good chance of advancing deep in this thing. I don't think you could say that about any other 9th place team in any conference. So shame on the top teams for underperforming but the depth is amazing in the league.

I dont think it is quite that impressive when they had to beat each other to get there. The Big East was 7-9 against teams outside their conference. I am not taking anything away from Marquette but the Big East's 9 and 11th place teams made the Sweet 16 beating Big East teams so I dont think it was a great positive for the conference. Here are the Big East's wins outside their own conference - Clemson (12 seed), a 16 seed, a 15 seed, 2 14 seeds, Xavier (6), and

Missouri (11) and two Big East teams. Not super impressive. Right now

their marquee win is Xavier.

Now I dont think the Big Ten did great either. They only have two teams in the Sweet 16 as well and according to seeds they "should" have 3.

This has actually been the tournament of the mid-majors and so far the ACC has done pretty well too. It has been an entertaining tourney and the state of Wisconsin is doing well, just not the conferences the team reside in.

I thought three point shooting would largely dictate how far Wisconsin advanced given their reliance on the jump shot and so far they are 21-42 from three point land the first two games. Given their struggles this year from behind the arc away from the Kohl Center, it's great to see it hasn't carried over to the tournament.

As for Marquette, the biggest surprise to me has been their defense which overall wasn't good over the course of the season. It was their offense that mainly got them into the tournament. They played fabulous defense vs Xavier though and had a great game plan to shut down Holloway. Then tonight vs Syracuse, Marquette did allow them to shoot over 50%, but they forced 18 turnovers and out-rebounded a much bigger team.

Awesome to see both teams from the state advance to the Sweet 16.

Did anyone catch Barkley calling out the Big East right to Pitino's face during halftime of the ILL/KU game? It was awesome someone finally spoke out about how sure the Big East has a lot of teams, so obviously some are good but there a fair number of bad teams as well. He pointed out that there are a lot of decent teams but no greatness in the Big East and went so far as to say they have the best coaches and worst talent. Pitino argued that MU winning showed how deep the league is and Barkley countered that all the top teams losing showed how mediocre the league is. Pitino was getting visibly upset and started saying something about getting two teams to the final four Barkely said no way because ND was going to lose to FSU later. Pitino guaranteed ND would not lose to FSU and Barkely just laughed and said we'll see. He even got in a shot calling the Big East the Itty bitty East as they went to break.

Sure enough ND got smoked by FSU I even stayed up late to see if Pitino/Barkley appeared but to my disappointment neither were on the post game show.

I've always thought the BE gets an inflated reputation because of the sheer number of teams, despite that all of the top teams don't play each other 2x and there are still a lot of bad teams as well. There a lot of 1x only matchups between the upper half of the league. The league is just too big.

Pitino has to defend the conference for recruiting purposes. The same way he will always defend the referees. I'd prefer a retired coach be on those shows.

I would love to have Bruce back in Milwaukee coaching MU if Buzz leaves.

Absolutely not, Pearl is as slimy as it gets.

Pearl was just deemed too slimy for an SEC school. So that leaves what? Another SEC school (LSU?), Cincy, and UNLV?

Why wouldn't they consider him? He has won with every team he has coached.

Because he's a cheating piece of scum. I would hope MU holds itself to a higher standard than wins alone (although based on some of the rumors about Buzz I'm not so sure).

Pearl got caught breaking the rules so he lied about it. The only difference between him and the rest of the coaches at competitive programs is he got caught and was fired.

Of course Pearl will find another job but it certainly will not be at Marquette. He will have to rebuild his reputation before he gets another job at a D1 school with a recent history of success like MU. If Buzz leaves, Marquette can choose from many qualified and reputable candidates. Pearl would be a bad choice because he would be under increased scrutiny and would divide the fan base.

With Jeter getting looks elsewhere, I would love to see Pearl back at UWM. I have no idea how serious his violations were, except that they sure don't sound serious, extra phone calls, a cookout at his house (recruits can visit school but not home). Pearl was a breath of fresh air. With so many rules and so many oversights and oopses, it's tough to care about piddly stuff.

Jeter is supposedly the top choice at Bradley...is that really more prestigious than UWM? I think Bradley might be Missouri Valley, but that's upgrading from a Honda to a Toyota.

Then he's a dumb cheating piece of scum for getting caught.

um, what? Would it surprise you if Bo Ryan was caught cheating tomorrow? You're my guy homer, and, I'm probably sparking a new debate but it seems there is no way to stop "recruiting violations" such as these.

Yes but he got in trouble because he lied about the violations. Men's basketball is the #3 sport at Tennessee and they aren't going to risk the entire department facing a ban from post season over Pearl.

Yeah it's not like he cheated and then came clean. he lied about it after he got caught.

And the pics of him and the coeds probably wouldn't go over too well with the people at MU.
