Prince not going anywhere?

I'm not going to get excited about it. Fielder and Boras are probably just drumming up attention for next year. Maybe they are looking to negotiate a sign and trade.

Or most likely they could just be negotiating a 2011 contract to avoid arbitration. He would be much easier to trade with a 2011 contract signed.

I don't think arbitration has anything to do with it. Why would Fielder travel to Orlando to the GM meeting s to address arbitration. That doesn't make any sense to me. Could be a sign and trade I guess. Wouldn't we have heard something already if that was the case?

i'm not completely dismissing the possibility of an extension with Fielder, though i do think it's unlikely. look at Hart, who was shopped around until Melvin felt he couldn't get fair value, so we went with a contract extension. maybe the same thing could be happening to Fielder. plus it's hard to get in the head of Attanasio, who certainly understands the risk of signing anyone to a gigantic contract, but may very well not care and just want his superstar player to remain a Brewer.

Jayson Stark with an update on Adrian Gonzalez

Even if Adrian Gonzalez had no health questions, it was probably only about a 50-50 shot that the Padres were going to trade him this winter. But Gonzalez's recent surgery to "clean up" the labrum area in his right shoulder downgrades those odds considerably -- at least for now.

Gonzalez told the San Diego media corps this week that he should be ready to play by the end of spring training. But other clubs are hearing talk that he won't even swing a bat until March. So that's not what you'd call a great incentive for teams to charge in there in the next few weeks and trade three big-time prospects for this man.

"I think that complicates this for them [the Padres]," said one front-office man. "And it's got to be a concern for any team. They can always keep him and trade him at the deadline if they're out of it. But suppose he starts slow. & Then it gets even harder for them to get a real return."

This is probably pretty nice for Melvin

Nobody was saying he is there to address arbitration. Rather that he may be there to meet with Doug about his contract next year to avoid arbitration since this could be a convenient time and location for him.

In addition, there aren't really sign and trades in MLB.

This is probably nothing more than a marketing ploy by Boras to get Fielder's name out there. He can't negotiate with any other teams, but if he was really just there to visit with Doug - why would they do it at the winter meetings? I'm sure Doug would have been happy to meet with them in Milwaukee.

I actually think Prince Fielder lives in Florida. I know I heard that somewhere... twobrewers, it's very unprofessional for Fielder to be marketing himself when he is still under the Brewers control for 1 more season especially at the GM mettings. I doubt that is what they are doing.

Fielder has worked out around Orlando w/ Rickie Weeks & others in the past. I don't recall where in FL he lives, but if it's not Orlando, it's obviously not a ridiculous drive from his house to get there.

A lot of athletes live out near Windermere, which is west of Orlando. Ken Griffey, jr., Shaq, and a number of PGA golfers come to mind. But I know there are many more.

I think Prince is looking to become an agent once his contract is up. Thus, he's interning with Boras at the winter meetings.
Given all the coverage Prince's appearance at the meetings has generated, I have to believe this is a plausible theory.

Very few trades in MLB are contingent on an extension signing, at least that I can think of. I remember that happened when Johan Santana was dealt to the Mets, but that's about the last one I can remember. It's just very messy from a trade negotiation standpoint, and there aren't salary cap issues to deal with like in the NBA.

To me that is exciting as it means we'll almost certainly be involved in a big trade for a pitcher in order to seriously contend in 2011. If we go get Greinke or someone near his caliber, I really like our chances in 2011. If everything goes wrong, we might be able to get a better return at the trade deadline for Prince. Then if its clear we need to re-build we can trade Greinke (or other aquired pitcher) before he hits free agency to to replenish the system.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

I can't disagree with anything you said, FIB4Brew. If Melvin can't swing a trade of prospects for pitching (like a package centered around Lawrie for Greinke, etc), we're kind of screwed, though.
Yeah, the Royals could ask for the moon and Melvin might have to give up Lawrie and one of Odorizzi/Jeffress plus 2 lesser prospects to get a deal done. Then I'm not so sure about going for broke in 2011. Glad I'm not the GM!

Weren't the Brewers going to deal for Phil Nevin at one point, but it fell through due to a lack of a contract extension?
I think it was Burnitz for Nevin if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if it was that, or if there was some type of salary dump implication (the Padres or whoever wouldn't eat enough salary...... a 'Selig-Prieb special').
