Winter Weather Thread 2010-2011

hawing
I see the Metrodome roof caved in last night/this morning. No word on just deflated due to the weight of the snow or torn off the building and into the stadium bowl itself.

It was nice to get up not long ago and hear the whirr of the neighbor's snowblower as he plows his sidewalk and ours. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

The volume of snow in Madison still doesn't look massive, though - maybe six inches.

Edit: It was also fairly hilarious to see the Weather Channel report on the Metrodome roof; they said it was potentially due to the snow. You think?

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I had a friend's surprise 30th birthday party in Appleton last night - and I live in Milwaukee. Great timing, right?

Anyway, we decided to leave really early and hit up Legend Larry's in Sheboygan for some chicken wings that we heard were really great and won all these awards (a couple of us are wing fanatics and wanted to see what the fuss was all about), so we left at 12:30 PM Saturday and went to Sheboygan. Didn't hit any snow at all not only to Sheboygan but almost the entire length of our drive up to Appleton. I would say we hit some snow 15-20 minutes before getting to Appleton, but it was not much.

The drive home was another story. Our friends thought we were insane for trying to drive home - and it turns out they were right. Worst blizzard I've ever driven in. We left Appleton at 9 PM and got home to the east side at midnight'ish. I would say the average speed home was 30-35 mph. The worst parts were right out of Appleton where there were periods where I couldn't see anything at all... so I basically had to almost-stop and wait for my view to improve. Luckily, there were very few people as idiotic as us trying to go South on 43 last night - so I felt relatively safe. The snow didn't turn to rain until around Menomonee Falls and then my car looked like the Delorean after traveling in time. It was kind of fun in a weird way because of how challenging it was, but we made it so I can't complain too much. I will not be driving at all today.

Roads around here appear to be relatively decent at this point. Just a slight flurry happening right now as the snow seems to be dying down. We're going to my parents to watch the Packer game, but they just live on the other side of town. Glad we don't have to do any big traveling otherwise.

Under the 6 or so inches of snow I shoveled was at least a half inch of wet, heavy slush. I think we had close to a half inch of rain last night before it started snowing, so all that rain got trapped. There are places on my driveway that had a lot of ice under the snow, too.

I had a waist deep drift over my driveway this morning. It took me about 2 hours to blow all of the snow out of a 30' long and 15' wide drive. Seriously, I could probably blow the driveway again this afternoon just to keep up with the blowing/drifting...

The pics are nice to look at.

I have to commend you on your restraint with this comment, craig. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I took another pic earlier today, and I should've snapped it a few ticks to the left. We had drifting on our driveway comparable to Hammer's.

I can't take credit for these awesome (& huge) snowmen. Some kids down the street made them prior to Snowmageddon. They're about 7 or 8 feet tall. Impressive.

Yeah there is a nice little storm going on today, mostly across western WI and Minnesota. They are expecting 3-5" of snow in Minneapolis today and another 1-2" during the football game.

Amazingly, Milwaukee is going to lose out again on this system, as only 1-2" are expected in far SE Wisconsin before the precip changes to light drizzle/freezing drizzle. There is also going to be a fairly significant Christmas eve/Christmas day storm that is likely going to completely miss Wisconsin to the south.

Man, I'm out in NJ for the holidays, & they got absolutely dumped on yesterday & late last night. I'm not sure exactly how much snow fell, but the projected total for this particular area by 1pm today is 25".

Our flight was supposed to leave Sunday eve., but got rescheduled for this a.m., so last night we were out clearing snow off the driveway in an attempt to keep our snow-clearing work this morning as low as we could. We were out there in the teeth of the storm; it's really been a while since I've seen a storm this severe. I had icicles form on my facial hair, including eyebrows & eyelashes. My jeans got soaked through wet eventually, & I had to go inside. I didn't bring any good snow gear, since the forecasts leading up to this trip had the local weather with sunshine & daily highs near 40. This is unreal. I'll try to post some pics later. Oh yeah, in case it wasn't obvious, our flight was canceled. We're now scheduled to leave sometime on Weds.

I don't have to remove rain from my driveway. I'll take rain. However, I don't live in a flood plain and we have never had any major issues with water in our basement. (Ok, I just guaranteed that the next time it rains our sump pump won't work!)

Yes, rain at or around 32 degrees can cause issues on the road, but rain at anything above 34 or 35 is generally not an issue in regards to icing on the roads.

Once Christmas is over, I want all snow to disapear.

Wow, after getting stranded in the Boston area storm last week I am now going to be traveling a TON this week in Wisconsin. Here's your chance Mr. Weatherman...what's it look like for Monday? Weather.com says 80% chance for snow and I have a 380 mile trip planned.
