The Walking Dead (New Show On AMC)

razzzorsharp

Call me stupid, but I like the show. Surprised so many people here are hating it.

Yeah its probably different than the comic but its Hollywood, aren't you used to it by now? I think the whole Sophia thing has dragged out a little long, but there's only so much zombie hunting you can do before it starts to feel repetitive, and also most people in a small group would search for the girl. The writers seem to be trying to drag the audience into feeling like they are there, which in this part of the show kind of sucks and is boring but its buildup. I don't know, maybe I am just obsessed with zombie flicks/shows but I would rank this one as one of the most well done Zombie shows/movies.

I have to say, the people on the show make some stupid choices that the people in the comic don't. As annoying as the Sophia storyline is, how do you go from finding a credible lead one week, to thinking she's maybe hiding out in a subdivision that anyone should have known would be full of walkers? And how do they go through their initial sweep of the houses with guns drawn instead of some sort of quiet weapon? They go far from the house to shoot guns and not attract walkers to themselves earlier in the episode, but when they go into a deadzone, they prepare to start shooting first?

The show is just going far to slow to make up for lameness like that.

This. I'm trying to keep the faith with this show, but it's becoming increasingly hard. I actually stopped paying attention for a few minutes, and when i looked back up, i saw they were in a subdivision, which i couldn't for the life of me figure out why..

I think the issues people who have read the comics have with the show isn't that it has changed, its that they are dragging out the source material. Usually when something is made into a movie a bunch of stuff is cut out and people complain about that. In this case though, there are tons of exciting and key plot points that they should be getting to, but the pacing of the TV show is actually slower than the comics.

I thought the show was awesome last night. I think Shane was right in doing what he did. And of course the ending was great. For those who've read the comic, is that what happened there too?

Last night's episode was good, and left me thinking that the problem with the pacing in the past month may have been a result of them deciding how they want to wrap the first half of the season, and then not having a good way there. Which sucks, because it's a waste of episodes and time. So this is probably a good time for a break.

As for how the barn went down in the comic compared to last night, about the only similarity is that eventually the walkers in the barn are dead.

How it went in the comic [+]
In the comic, Sophia's storyline is vastly different and she wasn't a walker in the barn. The zombies aren't let out to be killed, they break out and kill two of Hershel's children. Hershel's son was being kept in the barn and he finally accepts that they're not human and kills his own son. That mostly wraps up the farm storyline and they are forced to move on.

I loved last nights episode. I think my problem with the sophia story line stemmed from the fact that I thought they were going to find her alive. I didn't like how slow it went, but I love how it ended.

Glad I waited until I finally watched that last episode to read this thread. The twist at the end was great....although after reading how the comic played out I wouldn't have minded that either.

The Walking Dead picked a good time to air their best episode since the premier. Even beyond the fine ending, the character moments were crackling for a change. Shane may be going off the deep end, but it's to the show's credit that he makes some fine points.

Hopefully when they return they'll remember what they did and won't meander as much.

I loved the finale, but it just seemed like they could've done the same arc in 4 episodes instead of 10.

I heard in an interview the next episode to air is considered the best besides the premire by the people who make the show. It really is good tv when we get resolutions.

If this was a show about either action or zombies, I would agree. They need time to develop characters and they will take a lot of it. Some will say, and I will agree in some instances, that this show focuses on the wrong characters at times however.

I guess I felt as though they stalled, going through the exact same plot device for multiple episodes, without giving any depth to any of the group dynamics, until it all finally exploded in the last 1.5 episodes.

I don't know, it just didn't add depth for me, it didn't make me more attached to any of the characters, it felt like a constant reminder of how each character acts over and over again.

A big reason why it seems so slow is because the episode order was doubled from last year and the budget was cut in half. I'm not sure if the per episode budget was cut or the season budget was cut (meaning could have as little as 1/4 budget per episode as they had last year). Either way, with a smaller budget, there will be less action and more talking/random walking around doing nothing. One could argue that the writers could still have done a better job with the character development even with a smaller budget but I think a big reason the show isn't as good as last season is the reduced budget (and the lack of Frank Darabont).

Was the pacing much better last season even with the larger budget? This just seems to be the shows MO to me.

I don't know, I thought last season was better because they had a lot of action and suspense (or at least a lot more than this season). Maybe having everything crammed into 6 episodes made it better.

**MINOR SPOILERS IN POST**

So, it came back tonight and I've decided to give it the rest of the season to see if I stick around, but Laurie's move was so stupid I almost popped the bubble. Here's a re-enactment of it.

Everyone: This woman is sick, we need Herschel.

Rick and Glen: We'll go get him from town.

*5 minutes later*

Laurie: I'll go to town without telling anyone so I can tell Rick and Glen, this woman is sick, we need Herschel.

But I will say, midway through the episode I realized that the show really took the character of Rick from the comic and split him into two characters, Shane and Rick. But that bar scene, that was comic book Rick, who isn't afraid to make tough choices. Maybe they'll finally toughen him up.

I would call what currently started last night as "season 2.5" as it's the 2nd half of the 2nd season.

Season 1 started in October 2010 and lasted something like 6 episodes.

Season 2 started in October 2011 and was something like 8-10 episodes.

Great kickoff to the 2nd half of the season. I have been on the edge of my seat since Ep. 7. I haven't been this moved by tv since.........ever.

TDawg: They need to do something with this guy. So far his only role seems to be 'the token black guy'.

Lori: Boring character. The only thing she seems to be there for is to remind Rick how important his duty to the group is.

Darryl: With the unfortunate (but absolutely awesome, gut wrenching, heart breaking) ending of Sophia's storyline, I hope they find more compelling storylines for Darryl's character. To me, aside from Shane, Darryl is the most interesting of the bunch.

Dale: (in-show)......really needs to stop pushing Shane's buttons. I keep waiting for Shane to straight up snap, and either give Dale a beat-down, or just shoot him. I don't think Shane's there yet, but he's getting there.

I love that they're paying homage to the comic, but not sticking to the story. It's nice to have source material to draw from, but not stick so closely to it that everyone knows what's going to happen already.
