The Brewers' Next Manager; Latest -- Valentine may have inside track to the job; Cora, Melvin, Roenicke also finalists

Sage
They probably are all reasonably the same from a WAR standpoint. One difference could be if Bobby V sells more tickets that the other guys, that's worth something...or at least it pays for the extra $1-2mm it costs to hire him. I think it's somewhat reasonable to say he'd bring a little more excitement to the field than a few of the other guys. Torre generated a little of that out here when he came. In the end he was good when his players were and not so much when they stunk, but he probably sold some tickets.

Who is Bill Scott?

Bill Scott was an Irish footballer who played as a goalkeeper for, among others, Everton, Leeds City, Liverpool and Ireland. In 1913 Scott was a member of the Ireland team that beat England for the first time with a 2–1 win at Windsor Park.

I agree with this part. It's like for you or I, if you can make 75K sitting on your couch, would you take a job when you are in your fifties or sixties that pays you 150K where you have to sit in an office 45 hours a week and/or travel? Many would not.

I'm only 30 and take that approach. In my field, you can work as a consultant and easily make six figures. However, you're always on the go, have to deal with a bunch of nonsense like insurance billing, and your schedule is completely unpredictable. Meanwhile, I get paid enough to support an adequate lifestyle and have a pretty ideal work situation, so I've never been tempted to go into consulting.

This is exactly why it's going to take big bucks to lure Valentine back into managing. I don't think it's because his heart is not in it or he is only doing it for the money. The fact is that he has a cushy job at ESPN right now. He basically works in his hometown, and I would imagine makes a nice chunk of change for working part-time. When you hire guys like this, you generally have to break out the checkbook. Look what the Lions gave Matt Millen to run the franchise into the ground. Other guys like Cowher, Fratello, etc. could probably have any coaching job they want for much more than they currently make, but they don't want to go back to the grind right now for whatever reason.

I saw a quote from Melvin stating that Valentine is, "Very eager to get back to managing." I think all this talk that he is reluctant to come back is a bit suspect. He did interview with both the Marlins and Orioles earlier this year. Those instance just didn't work out for whatever reason.

I was told that Attanasio has been attending to an important matter and hasn't had time to reconvene with GM Doug Melvin and assistant Gord Ash, making it impossible for a decision to be made.

Ugh, we have a meddling owner. Even if you don't think Melvin is a good GM he should still be making decisions about who is hired as the manager.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

If I were going to be dropping 3 mil a year on a manager, I may want to have some input into that. I see nothing wrong with him being a part of the process. I can guruantee that every owner in major sports in part of the hiring of a manager. They may not have the final say, but they do get some input.

I'd envision a selection committee comprised of about half a dozen people... with everyone being given an equal opportunity to be heard and Doug Melvin making the final decision.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I think the owner of of the team has the right to give his 2 cents or at the very least be present during discussions.

Bill Scott is a reporter and the sports director for Wisconsin Sports Network and WHBY of Appleton. As far as I can tell, this Bobby Valentine tip is by far the most high profile information leak that Scott has been a part of.

Well, now this is interesting. I think I may know what the important matter than Mark Attanasio was tending to was. The Yankees need a pitching coach, and are interested in Rick Peterson, who is under contract with the Brewers. It could be that Mark was looking into that. The Yankees could get Peterson, if our next manager wants someone besides him. That would bring up the question, though: who would the next manager want as pitching coach?
