Quick electronics question.

JoeHova

Hi everybody. I'm rearranging some stuff in my spare room and the way things ended up, I have a computer (flat screen imac) next to a cathode ray tube television. After I rearranged everything, I realized that CRT TVs create an electromagnetic field. Does anyone know if that field is strong enough to affect the hard drive on a computer? I like the way things are organized now so I don't really want to change it again but I also don't want to mess up my computer by having it too near to a magnetic field. I assume it will probably be fine because DVRs and video game systems have hard drives but the stuff I have on the computer is far more important than what I have on those and I don't want to risk losing it just because I have the computer placed in a bad spot.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm no expert, but think about how many systems back in the days of CRT that had either:

  • a CRT monitor built into the computer itself
  • a CRT monitor plopped on top of the CPU

Don't go by my opinion alone, but my gut says you're OK.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
