Team by team analysis of Fielder trade partners

I wonder if a 3-team deal with the Nationals and the Dodgers could be worked out. The Nationals would get Loney, the Brewers get Billingsley and prospects from the Nationals, and the Dodgers receive Fielder and Parra/???? (depending on a physical though for Parra). Not sure who else the Dodgers would be interested in maybe Narveson and Fielder to the Dodgers.

The Nationals are showing interest in Loney along with Kemp. I believe this trade would help out all three teams.

I think we are probably better off trading McGehee or Gamel. They will probably bring a bigger return and once Fielder leaves we can just slot Lawrie in and shuffle guys around to find our best defensive alignment. I would prefer to trade McGehee because I think Gamel will be a much better player and he is younger. We could extend him and buy out a few FA years if he is good enough. McGehee has one less year of service time and it would make little or no sense to extend him since he will be 32 to start the season in his first year of FA.
Agreed. Florida or Anaheim would be nice partners for them, since both have huge holes at 3B and both have pitching to trade in return.

I'd even add Lawrie to the list of players I'd rather trade than Fielder. They might very well get a better return for Lawrie than Fielder because of how long he will be under their control and at such a low salary. Lawrie was the #16 overall pick, and the Brewers have two picks ahead of that next year so they can find the next Lawrie with one of those two picks, and at worst the Brewers will get two picks for Fielder (not as high as #16, but they find a bat with one of their top picks next year to replace Lawrie and then use the two picks for Fielder to find the next Odorizzi/Gallardo). If Lawrie stays at 2B he is part of a logjam that includes Weeks, Gennett, and possibly Dykstra; if he moves to the OF he is blocked by Hart and Braun. If he is capable of playing 3B I think he would already be playing there. And Lawrie is a RH hitter, and the Brewers need more LH balance. If the Brewers trade Fielder and move Hart to 1B, then it is likely that Gamel moves to RF so there still is no room for Lawrie. Lawrie may be at his peak trade value now, and the Brewers best bet to get pitching may be to trade him. I don't think his situation is too far from LaPorta, in that the Brewers just don't have room for him so his best value is to be traded.

This really isn't true, at least not until Weeks signs an extension. And once Fielder is gone, there is a hole at 1B that could be filled by Lawrie, or Braun or Hart could go to 1B and Lawrie could replace one of them.

I'm willing to trade Lawrie, and take one more shot with Prince. I don't expect the Brewers to be offered a significant package for Prince, so I'd rather enjoy him for another season and hope on some young pitching.

However, a Lawrie trade would need to include a Weeks extension.

No way am I trading six years of Lawrie for one year of Prince.
Of course you aren't. You're trading six years of Lawrie for badly needed #2-type starting pitching, one year of Fielder, plus two draft picks for Fielder.

And once Fielder is gone, there is a hole at 1B that could be filled by

Lawrie, or Braun or Hart could go to 1B and Lawrie could replace one of

them.

Then where does Gamel play? I really don't think he can stay at 3B with his defense. He will have to go to the OF to replace whomever of Hart/Braun goes to 1B.

Lawrie could move to 3B if needed. Presumably Lawrie is playing 2B, because that could easily be a position of need in 2012, while the Brewers currently have Casey and Gamel at 3B. I don't think the Brewers are so loaded with advanced hitters that they need to move Lawrie.

I am not on board with trading Lawrie at all at this point. Our offense looks good now but I think we had a couple guys over performing and Fielder will be leaving soon. We do need to improve our pitching but that should happen in the next couple years with some of our minor leaguers being ready. I don't want to see trades for short term gains when we have a chance to be good for several years starting in 2012.

As the giants have been relatively inept with the bat this post season and have advanced to the World Series based on their pitching, do you think they would be interested in a Fielder for Bumgarner trade? Bumgarner looks to be a pretty good lefty starter and may be a good piece of a package to get for Fielder. I am not sure what else SF has to offer.

Too late for Madison I think. Maybe after last year when Bumgarner's stock was down due to decreased velocity and Fielder would've been more than a one year rental, but at this point 5 years of Bumgarner>>>1 year of Fielder.

Plus you gotta figure they'll overpay Huff for his career outlier, after all it is Sabean wearing the captain's hat.

I don't think Bumgarner is a possibility, mainly because the Giants can't afford Fielder. Here's an article on the restraints the Giants will have, because they won't raise payroll despite making the World Series. http://www.realgmbaseball...ak_up_team_in_offseason/

That puts the Giants out of the race for Fielder in my opinion.

We've talked about this before, but there are a few reasons the Giants may not be in on Fielder. Huff's season is one reason, and at some point Pablo Sandoval may have to slide across the infield to 1B. In addition, Brandon Belt had a huge year in the minors, finishing this past season at AAA, and currently raking in the AFL.

Can we please get past the money argument. We can easily kick in money to make the deal happen if the return is good. No team should be eliminated based on money.

I read that Boston may still be hot after Adrian Gonzalez. With San Diego's success this past year, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that they may keep him one more year. If that's the case, would Boston be interested in Fielder? I'm not sure that Ortiz will be back and he could easily slip into the DH role.

Is Scheppers projected to be a starter? I noticed he pitched mostly out of relief this past season. I'm not sure how interested I would be in receiving a reliever in return for Fielder. We have a few guys in house that can slide over to first base so I don't think it's really necessary to get a first basemen in return. I would trade him for the best major league ready pitcher or the two best pitching prospects you can get for him.

I don't see the point in trading Prince for prospects at this point, especially relief pitchers because the bullpen seems pretty crowded to me at this point. I'd rather at least wait to see how things play out to the deadline and take prospects then if out of contention or just take the two picks.
