The Office Season 7

pitchleague
i thought thursday was the funniest in a while. i agree that the show has gone downhill, but that would be expected when you lose someone like steve carell. this has been said on the thread numerous times, but the show set such a high standard, it can no longer live up to it. its still as funny as most of the top shows on tv these days some times, some episodes are bombs.

the fact that after every show some people here like it and some hate it, shows that everyone is looking for something different, which is tough for a show to live up to.

I don't know about that. The pool party episode and the appendix rupturing episode were really the only funny episodes for me. For me, The Office isn't even in the same class as Parks & Rec, Community, Workaholics, It's Always Sunny, The League, or Modern Family. Even when those shows are "bad," they are still better than the "best" Office episodes this past season.

I liked last week's, but then was really underwhelmed again this week. I get that Nellie (I think that's her name?) is a friend of Jo's, but she's so incompetent that the whole storyline is implausible and boring to me.

I also think they made a serious mistake making Andy the new manager. He's such a weak character in a position of authority that it's really hurting the show.

30 Rock and Parks and Rec are killing it lately.

I agree. I really like the idea of going to Florida and that on its own had some funny moments IMO, but the basis for going there with Nellie has bombed due to Nellie. Stanley has been funny showing Jim how to vacation.

Andy hasn't been very good. He's a quirky character, but not like Michael Scott. He was better in a smaller role. I really thought Jim would be the boss and I think that would've been a better way to go instead of Andy. I wonder if Will Arnett was the guy if he didn't get his show?

Also, I want more Creed. One of the few things that I was excited for with Michael Scott leaving was the thought that we'd get more Creed. It seems that he's getting less time than ever before, but maybe that is me.

It seems that some are pretty critical of this show in general. I watch it because it entertains me, in fact, I think the show didn't miss a beat with Michael Scott leaving.

It was mentioned above that we are all looking for different things, I agree.

I think the show is hilarious, and I don't break it down scene by scene every week. It makes me laugh, and that is good enough for me.

As far as Creed, one of the things that I love about his character is that they don't use him a lot, and when they do, it is AWESOME! Yes, I'd like to see more of him, but when he does show up, it's gold, which is why I like the scarcity as well.

I liked the "girl trying to get Jim" senario. Played out perfectly if you ask me...

I don't think many here are breaking it down scene by scene or looking too much into it (at least I'm not). Most of the time, I don't really care if a comedy is smart or not (though it can help). The Office just doesn't really make me laugh anymore. Actually, I rarely even crack a smile. I will continue to watch it because I've invested 7 or whatever years in it but it wouldn't bother me if it was canceled.

The Office could very well go down as this generation's defining tv show, so for that high of a status, i think it needs to stand up to some criticism. otherwise it's merely a good show and wouldn't deserve to be held up in comparison to shows like I Love Lucy, All In the Family, Andy Griffith, Cheers, MASH, The Simpsons or Seinfeld. i think shows that have been the #1 comedy for as long as The Office has at least deserve the conversation, and it's fun for me just to speculate whether a show will hold some sort of intrinsic value long after it's gone the way the great shows have, or if The Office will just be another one of those good shows that will fade from memory after it's gone.

it's nowhere near I Love Lucy, All In the Family, Andy Griffith, Cheers, MASH, the Simpsons, or Seinfeld in the lexicon of television history. It IS a very good show but it is a step-cousin when comparing to those that you listed.

Four to five years after it's gone, it will be in the good graces of most, but will not be remembered as a "best ever."

I agree with pitchleague, and I'm a huge fan of The Office. I still enjoy the show and tune in every week, but I wouldn't compare it to those other programs. To me it's more like something like Friends or Full House or Murphy Brown...good enough shows that were very entertaining in their own ways and had nice runs, but aren't really remembered as benchmark TV programs.

I agree, but IMO he hasn't really even had as much air time as he did with Michael Scott. Some shows you only see him and he doesn't speak.

I really think that the Office will hold up maybe not in the top tier but it's got to be in the second one. I have gone back and watched the old seasons from time to time and they are still really funny. I used to almost fall on the floor laughing at some of the stuff.

I agree it has fallen off and I don't laugh hard like I used to. I was just thinking a few weeks back how much I still just enjoy the show. I think it's because you feel like you know all the characters so well. Steve really was the glue that made all the characters better but I still think it's a good group. I just think they really could use someone that is over the top again to make them all shine. That's probably not going to happen though and anyone who was like that would just be looked at like they were copying Steve.

Anyone know if there has been talk of ending the show? I see it's around for next year, just haven't heard anything beyond that.

Where the ending is concerned, a lot will depend on the next showrunner.

Paul Lieberstein (Toby) is stepping down from running the day-to-day production of the show, and is believed to be working on an Office spin-off centered around Dwight. The show only received a 13 episode order (as was the case with virtually everything else that aired on NBC thursdays), and Mindy Kaling (Kelly) will not be returning, as she's starring in a new sitcom that will air on Fox this fall. While most everyone else will be back (and I suspect Lieberstein will make time for the limited number of appearances Toby would be expected to have on a 13 episode run), the short order puts the future of the show in the same position as everything else on the network -- they can't cancel everything.

NBC appears to be hedging its bets on a lot of shows. The ones beginning in the fall will get a chance to be picked up for a full run. On a related note, Parks and Rec received a renewal for a full set of episodes, so there will be no worries there.

I think it's somewhere in between. To be fair, Game pointed out The Office will be the show of a GENERATION. Most of those shows are older and have no relevance to the late teens-late 20s generation of today. So I do think The Office will be close to being one of those great shows in history. But on the fringe of that status.

Recently, I've tried to watch Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Cheers, etc. Just not funny at all to me after time has gone by. Seinfeld has still held up, and i think always will. I have a feeling The Office will too. We don't even realize how often we use a line from The Office in our daily lives, it just happens. That's always the sign of a show that's built to last.

No doubt it's not nearly as funny this season, but it's like a good friend. Dependable, look forward to seeing it, that sort of thing.

Well said fvbrewerfan. Only thing I disagree with is that I still watch cheers and still love it. Great point on how much we use lines from the office. I think some have forgot because of a weaker season just being on, how great the previous ones were. Obviously everyone will have different opinions but for me, it's one of my all time favorites.
