Doug Davis vs Jon Garland

Crash2303

Ok I'll put it another way since what I said didn't come out correctly. Jon Garland is one of the worst pitchers in baseball who routinely has a full time job which is what the Brewers were looking for, established pitchers. His career 4.70 FIP and 4.59 xFIP are some of the worst stats you can find over an 2000 IP career. Only 4 pitchers in baseball history have 2k+ IP and a worse FIP than Garland does and he is still young and likely to pass some of them on the list. Suppan, Traschel, Hentgen and Wakefiled were all as good or better than him in their primes. Only 20 pitchers in baseball history have 2k IP careers with an ERA worse than Garland. He has had exactly one above average season from a peripheral standpoint and that was 5 years ago.

Garland wouldn't have been a better choice than Davis other than the fact he happened to stay healthy and Davis did not. I'd still rather have him because of age but not getting Garland is no big loss.
