Catcher Mike Rivera, infielder Edwin Maysonet and reliever Mark DiFelice were told they would not make the club but will remain in camp until the end.

Second baseman Eric Farris was optioned to Class AAA Nashville; this is the first option used on Farris. He can bounce between AAA and MLB for the next three seasons -- a very Gamel-like situation. The change instituted a couple of years ago in which players did not have to be added to 40-man rosters until after four professional seasons instead of three for Rule 5 eligibility makes it seem like college selections such as Farris are under team control even longer than usual.

I know it's a "coulda, woulda, shoulda" type comment, but the pick right after Evan Frederickson was Mike Montgomery. Would be pretty nice to have him right now, but just goes to show how unpredictable these drafts are.

Also goes without saying that if an article has already gone to print and named the releases, the dicision must have already been made on assignments. Come on people, someone has to know something !!

Wow, Frederickson flat-out released. Can't say I saw that coming.
I remember posting a comment sometime back that this year would be his make or break season and he didnt do well he would prob be cut but I didn't think he wouldnt even have a chance this season. He must have just looked terrible this spring.

Why give up on a Supplemental pick so early? They still had control of him and could have given him some more time to figure things out. I am puzzled by this decision because it was a decision that wasn't needed to be made. Oh well, though. He probably just doesn't have the control to be a major league pitcher and Jack Z takes another strike to his inability to draft good starting pitching.

"Jack Z takes another strike to his inability to draft good starting pitching."

That about sums it up. I thought Frederickson, when he was drafted, was an absolutely awful pick. A college pitcher averaging a walk an inning in college? Not a chance he becomes anything but a volatile reliever at absolute best. Waste of a pick and waste of money.

I will be the first to say that I didn't think Arnett would bust. I had some misgivings, but I definitely didn't think he was this bad.

I don't think anyone thought Arnett was this bad. But I think many of us heard a pitcher from the Big Ten and were worried that he'd be lucky to have a career as good as Kyle Peterson.

It's a rite of spring -- MiLB.com indicates that veteran catcher Patrick Arlis has been assigned to Helena from Nashville.

There will be additional tweaking of all the lineups today and tomorrow to pare them to the 24 (AAA/AA) and 25 (A+/A) man roster limits.

We now know the vitals, thanks to his newly added MiLB.com page, of Dominican outfield signing Elvis Rubio, which Jim of Bernie's Crew highlighted back on February 8th.

Believed to be 17, he's actually 16, and will be 17 in July. Impressive frame already at 6'3", 215, bats / throws right.

Merklinger comes off the Huntsville roster as he's on outright waivers for a few days after being designated for assignment earlier today. If he clears waivers, he'll go back to Huntsville. If he's claimed, I'd look for Fiers, Byrd or Hand to move into the rotation, at least temporarily. The Brewers could also push Heckathorn.
