Obscure celebrity stories

gypcasino
I insisted on buying former Ministry and current REM drummer Bill Rieflin an ice cream cone when I ran into him and Chris Connelly in Chicago. Then he mentioned me by my initials in his blog.

This one is not my story, but a good one none the less. So I have a buddy that relocated from New Orleans to Texas after Katrina. He got a job delivering packages for UPS. After a few months on a job, he got a package sent to a ranch to the C/O Chuck Norris. Yes... THEY Chuck Norris.

He survived with out getting round house kicked to the face, but all of a sudden had a fully grown beard.

I sat next to Rosie Greer in a plane once -- He is a huge man, with huge fingers -- I giggled a lot watching him literally mash his laptop typing.

I met the big guy who played Jaws in Moonraker

My mom's best friend is married to the lead-singer of the Kingsmen.

My dad sells guns to Tom Selleck -- I have declined the opportunity to meet him though.

My best obscure celebrity meeting -- is when my wife got relentlessly hit on by Tracy and Lamond Murray at a Lyons (sort of like an Ihop/Dennys) restaurant in Oregon. (Lamond was still at Cal at the time).

Those are some obscure ones.

I can do obscure, or at least obscure celebrity. saw Rick Steves on a plane coming back from Europe once. He does travel shows on PBS. I didn't try to talk to him because I was reading a book, but my father sat next to the cameraman. And yes, stored somewhere in the house now, is Rick Steves' cameraman's autograph.

Uh oh, it's getting pretty political around here

No, no -- nothing like that -- my Dad wanted to know if I wanted to go to a gun show and meet him when he was selling Selleck some guns, and I opted for a nap instead -- It would have been a big commitment timewise.

My favorite celeb meeting happened at the Mall of America years ago. My buddy and I arrived at the mall to see lines of people filling up the whole bottom floor of the mall. Turns out that Mariah Carey was doing a signing later that afternoon.

Shopping stunk that day, as kids were screaming and it was way too crowded in the mall. We decide to get out of there, but ran into Mariah's limo driver. Turns out he was a local guy from Wisconsin that used to drive the Packer guys over to a bar I worked at for appearances. We talked about his latest gig and found out that Mariah lived up to her diva image.

At that moment, all these people suddenly rushed right at us. Mall security yelled at us to get into this bookstore and stay put. The rest of the area around the front of the bookstore was all filled up now, and the doors were closed, locking us in. So now my frustration is even higher, as we were just about to leave the mall, and now forced to sit in this bookstore and wait for something. Turns out, that the back exit out of the mall was through the back of this bookstore. As I am steaming and pacing around the bookstore, I fail to notice the doors open and Mariah and her security enter the store. My blind pacing put me right in the path of her, and made her stop with her face to face with me. My one moment with Mariah.........I looked at her and blurted out the first thing in my head...."nice rack Mariah." She looked startled, then laughed and patted me on the head before security tossed me like a rag doll out of her way.

This is really obscure.

If anyone remembers the farce of a show, "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?", they'll remembers the millionaire, Rick Rockwell was kind of shady in real life and I think they got divorced right away.

Anyway, he toured the country doing stand up after the show, trying to capitalize on his fame. He was in Green Bay and me and some friends sat in the booth next to him at Denny's. We were pretty rude, talking about him and stuff.

My favorite one, which dates me a lot, is when I ran into Michael Gross and his family (the real one, not the TV one) getting off the tube in London. June of 1985. No one on our trip believed me until we saw him a couple of days later at Westminster Abbey.

First: As a (Brewer-worshipping) kid living just outside of Milwaukee, I went to my allergist one day for the routine shots, only to walk into the waiting room to see - then-manager Tom Trebelhorn. I was too nervous to even go say 'Hi'/'Go Crew!'

Second: Partying one night at Monday's on State St. in Madison, my group of buddies & I were sitting at the window overlooking State. As a big dude walked by, I said, "Isn't that [then-Packer OG] Marco Rivera?" He stopped on his way by to peek in this particular bar, and I was easily able to tell that, yes, it was. My buddy from Boston didn't believe me, and actually (buzzed as he was) ran out of the bar to go confirm. All we heard was, "Marco!...." as he ran out the door. Said he was really nice about it, very soft-spoken.

(I work now at the Great Dane, and Mark Tauscher was there last weekend. It's funny how neither he nor Rivera looked like the giants they do on TV, yet at the same time, I wouldn't want my job to be trying to not get crushed by either one of them.)

Third: I used to work at the Kohl Center, so would see athletes a lot, obviously, but also concert performers. I can't say I had an 'encounter' or whatever, but the funniest had to be Billy Joel whizzing around the backstage bowels of the KC in his golf cart with Elton John sitting shotgun. Priceless - plus their show was incredible!

One time a few years ago I was out with my wife and another couple, seeing some of the sights in NYC. We walked into the Plaza hotel, and went to a cocktail lounge for a couple of drinks and hors doeuvres.

I was concerned that I wouldn't be allowed to stay, as I was only wearing a black t-shirt and shorts, and felt pretty out of place. Mostly everyone else was dressed for the Plaza. I had no idea we'd be going there. As we walked past one table, toward the next one, I felt better as there was another guy just wearing a t-shirt too.

As we passed that table, I noticed that the other t-shirt guy was Nicolas Cage.

Later that night we saw Matt Stone (curly haired guy from South Park) in the same bar with a really good looking woman.

1) The former head coach from the Vancouver Cannucks once tried to get a female coworker of mine to go back to his room with him.

2)Hung out with the huge black guy from the movie Summer School (Where've you been? My zipper got stuck). He was also in The Program and his dad is former Packer Willie Davis.

3) Saw Pete Rose at Nine Steakhouse in Vegas during march madness and jokingly asked who he liked in some obscure game and he went on for ten minutes on each team's strenghts and weaknesses.

4) Asked a girl at a bar in Phoenix if she was Jenna Jameson. She said no, left, and then the bartender told me that is really was Jenna Jameson.

5)Once dated a girl who's boyfriend before me was Darryl Hall from Hall and Oates.

There have been lots of run ins with Milwaukee celebs (i.e. KB from WKLH and Czabe from Lazer, Vince Vitrano at channel 4, and Paul Piaskowski from CBS news) but I don't count those.

When I was ready to board a plane at the Dane County airport to New York one morning, me and my professor (who I had to travel with for the journalism conference in NYC) spotted Gov. Jim Doyle at the terminal as we were getting ready to board. My professor knew Doyle's family and introduced me and then it turns out we were both going on the same plane to Detroit (layover). Doyle was headed to China and me and the prof to NY. The prof introduced me to Doyle and it seemed like Doyle had his own personal air marshal with him.

I also went to high school with Washington Wizards' Caron Butler (I was only a freshman and he was in his last year at Racine Park). He came back to visit a couple times and I met him and he shook my hand and said, "How you doing man?"

KB once PM'd me at that other message board we post on and called me a coward and said that the amount of posts I had spoke volumes about my character.

He should count since he's actually nationally known from his show on Fox Sports Radio.

I grew up with former Mariner and Yankee Jeff Nelson. We played Little League, American Legion, and high school baseball together for about 10 years. (Although he did plenty of semi-crazy things in his MLB career, including brawling with groundskeepers in Fenway Park, Jeff actually was a pretty mellow kid.)

I remember that. One of the best threads we ever had over there.

He's national? I thought he was just local in DC. OK, well I had dinner with him in Vegas once. Nice guy but he seemed to get upset when he wasn't the center of attention.

KB is a tool, I can't stand the guy.

Tim O'Driscoll, the Brewers official score keeper, is an old high school teacher, and friend of mine. In class one day he was talking about how he was in Madison for Halloween. He was walking down the street and he said some huge guy came over picked him up and threw him over his shoulder. He was drunk as a skunk OD said.

It was Chris Farley.

He was always high.

Saw A.J. Hawk and his wife/girlfriend (Brady Quinn's sister) at Best Buy in GB. She was tall.

My family was all eating at Old Country Buffet over by SouthRidge a couple years ago. A bunch of huge black dudes come flying in, and they were all surrounding a little black man. Turns out it was Little Richard, sparkly boots and all. He was passing out bible handouts, and touched my grandma's shoulder.

Met Jenna Jameson on Spring Break in 2001 in Panama City. Have the treasured pictures to prove it. Same trip was sitting in our ajoining room watching baseball tonight when I heard my buddies getting all excited. (I was with 8 guys.) Walk out there and WCW wrestler Chris Canyon is doing a beerbong. Awesome guy, stayed all night with us drinking (not a girl in the room) and came back the next night. It was actually pretty cool that he wanted to hang out with us, not the girls with us. When working for Harley delivered Wynonna Judd's motorcycle to her and met Peter Fonda aswell. Had Cher's road manager call me trying to get a bike for her. Met John Kerry on George Stepawhatever's show. Nice enough guy, offered me a job on his campaign when he found out I was a Poli Sci major. Too many to name (Harley kept me intertwined with a lot of b-list people.)
