Obscure celebrity stories

gypcasino

I like the turn that jaybird's game with the obscure Brewers took so I was wondering if anybody had any similar stories about obscure celebrity.

I don't know if anybody saw "American Movie" but I used to live in the same apartment building as this guy who was in it-

Sometime back in the early 90's my brother-in-laws band, Dreams So Real, was touring with Melissa Etheridge. They came to Madison to play the civic center and I got backstage passes. The day of the show I had a meeting in Milwaukee so I got there late and missed their set. As I was wondering around backstage, pretty buzzed from drinking on the roadtrip back, I came across this dude tuning and monkeying with his guitar. He had his back turned to me when I asked "Dude, how do I get to Dreams So Real's dressing room?" And of course it was Melissa and I felt really stupid but she was very cool and led me to them. We all ended up laughing about it later.

To top off the evening I got to take 3 bus tubs full of beer home courtesy of the civic center.

I saw Jeff Cirillo and his family at ESPN Zone in Denver. I left him alone though, as kids were in tow. Though we did have to wait for his kids to finish bowling before we could start.

Also, sat REAL close to Ryne Sandberg at a Cubs/Brewers game at Wrigley (nice seats). Color me unimpressed with how he handles himself in public.

When I was in New York for a National College Journalism Conference, I had a chance to check out the sites and went to a Knicks game at MSG and was less than 10 feet from Spike Lee when I was given a media tour of the stadium (part of the perks of being a journalism student at a national convention). I asked the usher if I could go down and get my picture taken with him and they said, "Do you belong down there?" Needless to say I walked away empty-handed.

At the same convention, I was at the ESPN Zone in Times Square and followed Tom Tolbert, formerly of NBA Tonight on ESPN, and got my picture taken with him.

Then a year earlier, I was in Dallas for yet another journalism conference and had the honor of attending Kevin Blackistone's workshop of column writing. The man was on Around the Horn and before he began the workshop, he said something to the extent of, "only drunken college kids know who I am."

This is as obscure as it gets...when I was a pizza guy in Eau Claire, the guy in charge told me to take this one and that one. As I got ready, he changed his mind and gave "that one" to another driver.

"That one" ended up being a hotel run, where he delivered to Joe Theisman, the NFL QB best known for his gruesome broken leg. He was in town to speak at a coaching thing/banquet.

On our "pre-wedding" honeymoon, the soon to be wife and I went to some nice restaurant in Green Bay (the name escapes me) and we were at a table next to Ron Wolf and his (presumably) wife.

I partied with Green Day (yes, they're incredible dorks) way way back in their indy days (90 or 91) when the band I was in opened for them in a show at a place called TT's HotSpot. (Otherwise known to frequent visitors as Skid City)

Went out to dinner with Sean "The Muscleshark" Sherk (UFC lightweight champion) and Nick "The Goat" Thompson (BodogFight middleweight champion) after a house show in Racine about 8 months back with a bunch of friends. (I worked and hung out with a guy they both had trained with in the past).

I was behind Junior Spivey at Best Buy one day. Him, his wife and their new born were stocking up for a pending road trip with DVDs (675 dollars of dvds to be exact). I told em I'm a fan.. 2 days later. BAM traded.

Should I go try to find Mench? Teehee

This is as obscure as it gets...when I was a pizza guy in Eau Claire,

I delivered a pizza to the EC airport where Dick Cheney was doing a speech before the 2000 election. I took it to this secure area where - no joke - FBI/Secret Service types in black suits opened it up and inspected the pizza before it could enter the building. I'd like to think I've played a part in the heart problems of a world leader.

So, that American Movie guy in Brett's post....was he the "star"?

He was at some bar on Water St. one night when my buddy says, "Hey, it's the guy from American Movie!"

Of course, I have no idea what American Movie is or who the guy was, but he walked by my table and I said, "Hey, American Movie. You're the man!"

The guy kind of Cheech-like gives me a "Thanks, good to meet you."

I just did it on a dare, I'll never see the movie.

Mark Borchardt was the "star." Mike Schank, the guy in Brett's post is a buddy of Mark's who had a pretty memorable role though. I guess Mike used to be all wacked out on drugs but I believe he's been clean and sober for quite awhile. Last I heard anyway. If you hang out downtown or on the East Side you're bound to run into either or both of them sometime. The guy who used to live in my apartment is named Robert Richard Jorge. He had a very small role in the film.

The rapper Jadakiss came into my Walgreens once. We saw a tour bus pull up and first some big guy came in and was just looking around, he left and came back with 4 or 5 other dudes one of which was Jadakiss. I was the one who ended up checking him out. I knew it was Jadakiss but I didn't want to be an uber fanboy so I didn't say anything. Once he and his crew left the other person on register was like "dude that was Jadakiss!" and I was all "I know."

I was on Monday Night Raw as an extra, and I'm still trying to figure out why nobody ever posted a post about me saying... "Hey! I saw That one guy on MNR!!!"

Or is it that I missed my 15 minutes????

Or that such things just don't really matter?

In Richland Center, there's a big, three-day, country music concert every summer. I usually work on the stage crew and I've met some different people. I've talked with Mark Wills, Keith Urban, and I petted Martina McBride's dog. This last year, I spoke briefly with Ronnie Milsap. I talked at length with the drummer for Blake Shelton because for the show he was wearing a Prince Fielder jersey. I complemented him on it and he mentioned it was a gift. When I told him the price, he felt guilty for accepting it and I suggested that I could alleviate the guilt and take it from him. He laughed and politely refused.

I missed Michelle Branch and the Wreckers...I wanted to see her badly.

Went to a alumni toury in Lodi and Tom Wopat sat directly in front of me in the bleachers. For a couple minutes me and my friend did the "is that" routine till his wife turned around and said "yes it is Tom Wopat" which made it really sad to us.

When i was young and volunteering at EAA with my dad he comissioned me to tell Chuck Yeager to move his plane. Nothing like a 14 yr old telling a aviation legend that "i dont care what you want to do, you have to move your plane.

I have had my picture taken with Dick Vitale in Sarasota. It was the off season and he always eats at the same restaurant every morning, he was a great guy. Somebody else went up to him a little before I went and talked to him. The guy was a Pitino fan, so Dick V, called Pitino on his cell, and let this guy leave a message on Pitino's voice mail.

I have hung out with Ahman Green before and played video games with him. I am also good friends with Bonnie Blair and her husband.

While in Hawaii, my wife and I were picking up a few things at a surf shop on the way to do some snorkeling. The guy in front of me in line was Donnie Osmond. We actually rode the same bus to Hanauma Bay.

Actually, during a layover on that same trip, I saw Bob Barker at the LA Airport filming a commercial.

During a trip to New York when I was younger I saw Sara Jessica Parker filming something, but this was long before "Sex and The City"
