Fielder- What Brewer would you give up to GET him?

rickh150

My random guess as to what the payroll will be cut is to around the $75-80M mark.

Why is having a payroll of $80M an issue? The Brewers will have enough money to add one or two SP, depending on who is available. They won't really need to spend money anywhere else.

For only one year of Fielder? That seems like an overpay. I hope that kind of deal is out there this offseason, or the type of deal colby proposed.

heck, i thought that was more a lowball offer. Odorizzi isn't in AAA yet, and most teams, if they want a prospect, want an ML ready one like LaPorta was. i don't believe Odorizzi is quite as valuable on the open market as we're making him out to be, so i think a trade for a star has to start with him. i doubt an outsider would value Gamel too much, and Braddock is certainly replaceable.

i think Fielder's price tag is evened out from him being able to play for six months with a team instead of two if he would be a regular deadline trade.

to think if Fielder was a FA at the end of this year, the 2011 draft would sure be a fun one with three first-round picks plus a sandwich pick.

I believe the offer is on the lowball side as well. Gamel is a good, not great prospect. He has questions about his position, and hasn't proven he can hit at the major league level. Odorizzi is a low level guy. Recently the guys at BA were asked about him, and he was called a borderline Top 100 player. He was not an elite prospect, given his tools and no track record at the highest levels. As for Braddock, he's looking to be a fine player, but for now, he's a reliever, and while that's great, it's not a game changing guy. I think this is a decent offer for a guy who will hit 30-50 HR for you - a potential game changing player. I don't think Gamel, Odorizzi or Braddock offer that.

I won't argue about the defense, but he put up a league-avg. slash line for his position when he got his best chance at playing time in '09. He then proceeded to destroy AAA pitching in '10. The kid can hit, that's the last question I have about him. In fact, I'm pretty confident he could match the low-.800s OPS McGehee has provided this season, but Mat's would carry a better OBP.

I don't either, Gamel might reach 30 HR someday, but it's only one season of Fielder. And it would be 5 seasons of Gamel, and I think 6 each of Odorizzi & Braddock. Even though not one player is as good as Fielder, the total value is still a way bigger offer than I would ever make.

No, in this hypothetical it was made clear we don't have Fielder so we don't trade him for pitching. We are still far from a 90+ win team.

The hypothetical only makes sense if we already traded him away. If we didn't have him at all, who played 1B this last year? How'd we score these runs without him?

So then you are suggesting we would trade a slugging LH 1B in his last year of arby for pitching to turn around and trade prospects for a slugging LH 1B in his last year of arby? If we were operating in your hypothetical wouldn't we just trade prospects for pitching since 1 move is easier to pull off than 2?

I know, I feel like I have made that exact same post 20 times on here yet people continue to knock his offense or say he hasn't proven anything without a shred of evidence. Saying it doesn't make it true. I don't know what they want from the kid.
