Final: @Kane County 6, Wisconsin 2

Straily, Cougars top Rattlers

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars scored four times in the third inning to erase an early Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lead at Elfstrom Stadium on Saturday night. That was more than enough for Kane County starting pitcher Dan Straily. The Cougars closed in on a playoff berth with their 6-2 win over the Rattlers.

Wisconsin (57-79 overall, 31-37 second half) scored quickly against Straily. Kentrail Davis doubled with one out in the top of the first. Khris Davis walked to put two runners on base. Then, Hunter Morris singled to send Kentrail Davis home for a 1-0 lead. But, that was all Straily would allow in the game. He struck out seven and would give up just one more hit over his final 5-2/3 innings.

Kane County (70-66, 38-29) got their offense going against Wisconsin starting pitcher Hiram Burgos in the bottom of the third inning. Max Stassi doubled to start the inning. Jose Crisotomo and Conner Crumbliss followed with a walk and a single to load the bases with no outs. Tyreace House doubled to left and drove in two runs. Crumbliss came all the way around from first to score when Khris Davis overran the ball in left and the Cougars were up 3-1.

Later in the inning, House was at third with one out and Leonardo Gil struck out on a pitch in the dirt. Rattlers catcher Cameron Garfield looked House back at third before throwing to first to get Gil. But, as Garfield threw the ball, House broke for the plate. He just beat the return throw from Morris and Kane County was up 4-1.

The Cougars added two more runs in the fourth inning. Crisotomo knocked in a run with an infield grounder. The second runs scored when House dropped a perfect suicide squeeze for a bunt single to get Stassi home from third base and give Kane County a 6-1 lead.

Chris Dennis got the Rattlers back on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth inning. He blasted a home run, his seventeenth of the season, to right-center to start the top of the ninth. Wisconsin got two more runners on in the inning, but could not score again as they fell 6-2.

Game two of the series is Sunday evening at 6:00pm. Efrain Nieves (4-4, 5.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has Aaron Larsen (0-1, 10.80) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm.

Wisconsin box score

Burgos's line: 6 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 8/6 GO/AO, 94 pitches, 60 strikes. Khris Davis walked twice. Scooter Gennett again did not play.

Final: @New Orleans 2, Nashville 1

Zephyrs even series with 2-1 win

Nashville Sounds

METAIRIE, La. - New Orleans catcher Neil Wilson hit a seventh-inning home run to propel the Zephyrs to a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday night at Zephyr Field, evening the series at one game apiece.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Sounds (76-66) as well as the club's seven-game victory streak at Zephyr Field. It was the fifth consecutive one-run decision for Nashville (3-2 over that stretch).

The Zephyrs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when John Raynor led off with a single against Sounds starter Josh Butler then later scored the game's first run on a Danny Richar sacrifice fly.

The Sounds rallied to tie the game in the sixth against Z's starter Tom Mastny. With Eric Farris on base following a one-out single, Brendan Katin drew a two-out walk to push the speedy infielder into scoring position for team RBI leader Joe Koshansky, who knotted the contest at 1-1 with a single to center.

The game-tying knock extended Koshansky's hitting streak to 16 games, the longest by a Sound since 2007.

For the second consecutive evening, both teams' starting pitchers turned in quality starts and both left with no-decisions for their efforts.

Butler turned in his second straight strong outing against the Z's, holding New Orleans to one run on three hits over six innings. He allowed just two runs over 14.0 innings in that two-start swing. Mastny matched the right-hander's effort, allowing one run on five hits over six frames of work.

Left-hander Chris Waters replaced Butler on the Nashville hill in the seventh, making his first appearance since July 30th due to a left elbow injury. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Wilson touched the southpaw for a go-ahead solo homer to put the home team back in front, 2-1. The longball was Wilson's sixth of the year.

Brett Sinkbeil (3-3) picked up the win after working one scoreless relief inning for New Orleans.

Taylor Tankersley worked a perfect eighth for the Z's before closer Scott Strickland worked around a one-out Johnny Raburn single to toss a scoreless ninth for his 14th save of the year.

Waters (5-10) absorbed the loss for the Sounds after surrendering the eventual game-winning run in his lone frame of action.

Martin Maldonado finished 0-for-4 in the contest, snapping the Nashville backstop's six-game hit streak.

The teams meet again at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. Right-hander Tim Dillard (4-7, 4.22) will start for Nashville and face New Orleans left-hander Wes Whisler (3-6, 5.90).

Nashville box score

Butler's line: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 8/7 GO/AO, 69 pitches, 44 strikes. Raburn was 2-3 with a walk. Katin was 0-2 but was also hit by a pitch in addition to drawing the aforementioned walk. Koshansky also walked to go with his hit. Mitch Stetter worked a scoreless 8th.

Brewers fall back in pennant race with loss to Osprey

Helena Independent Record

MISSOULA — Adonys Canelo belted a three-run homer in the second inning as the Missoula Osprey defeated the Helena Brewers 5-2 on Saturday.

The Brewers (39-32 overall, 20-13 second half) remain 1/2 game ahead of Great Falls in the second-half Pioneer League standings after the Voyagers (42-28, 19-13) doubled up Billings 10-5.

Canelo’s home run came after Brewers starting pitcher Matt Miller walked Bobby Stone and gave up a single on a fly ball to center by Matt Helm. Fidel Pena singled on an infield grounder, scoring Stone, before Canelo went yard.

Miller (7-2), who leads the league in wins, went four innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one before Charly Bashara came in relief and finished with one run on four hits and three strikeouts.

Brandon Sizemore hit a sacrifice fly and Rafael Neda followed up with an RBI grounder as the Brewers picked up their only runs in the seventh.

Shea Vucinich led the Brewers with the only multi-hit game. He had two in five at-bats one night after hitting a walk-off home run and getting three RBIs against the Voyagers.

Missoula starter Patrick Schuster (5-4) picked up the win after going six innings, giving up both runs on five hits while walking and striking out three apiece.

Helena box score

Kind of an odd line from Miller, who by the looks of it certainly didn't deserve to give up four runs from only six baserunners. Neda was 1-2 with a walk, Greg Hopkins and Johnny Dishon both doubled, and Mike Walker, true to form, walked twice. Cody Hawn made a welcome return to the lineup from a hamstring issue and went 1-3 with a walk. Despite what the recap says, the box score lists Vucinich with one hit and Carlos George with two.

Final: @Clearwater 9, Brevard County 8 (12 innings)

Rundle's single caps Threshers' rally in extras

Clearwater Threshers

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Drew Rundle delivered the game winning knock, a two-RBI single, to carry the Clearwater Threshers over the Brevard County Manatees 9-8 in extra innings. The Threshers erased an early lead to win their 67th game of the year, and also broke the single season attendance record in the process.

With the home team down 8-7 in the bottom of the 12th inning, Joel Naughton led off with a bunt single and advance to third on a double by Jim Murphy. Both runners came around to score when Rundle lofted a fly ball into left field off Dexter Bobo.

Jon Velasquez worked three innings to improve to 3-9 while Bobo falls to 0-2.

After Clearwater spotted the visitors with a 4-0 lead, Naughton drove home a run on an infield single. Fidel Hernandez also wound up scoring on the play due to an errant throw by Matt Cline.

Then in the bottom of the seventh with two runners aboard, Steve Susdorf ripped his 11th home run of the year to give the Threshers their first lead of the ballgame. Darin Ruf made it back-to-back jacks with a solo homer to make it 6-4.

Brevard County knotted up the score in the top of the eighth when Sean McCraw launched a two-run homer to right field.

The Threshers responded in the bottom half on a two-out RBI single by Fidel Hernandez.

With the Manatees down their final at bat, Cline singled to left and then moved to third on a Clearwater error. Erik Komatsu followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Cline and force extra innings.

5,080 came out for the final Saturday night contest at Bright House Field, setting a new franchise record for single season attendance at 170,990 with one more game to game. Catch the final game of the 2010 season Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. and stick around for a post-game party at Frenchy's Tiki Pavilon. Gates open at noon.

Brevard County box score

That's two losses in two games for Bobo at BC, and several wasted rallies tonight for the Manatees. Starter Cody Scarpetta fanned six while allowing two runs on seven hits, two walks, and a hit batter in 5.2 innings. The usually reliable Dan Meadows let in four runs in 1.1 innings. Corey Frerichs, by contrast, was outstanding, striking out five in 3.1 perfect frames. Sean Halton was 3-6, and McCraw, Cline, Sergio Miranda, and Juan Sanchez each had two hits. Angel Salome doubled and walked, and Komatsu added a single and walk to his sac fly.

Final, Game One: @Huntsville 10, Mobile (Diamondbacks) 7

Final, Game Two: Mobile 5, Huntsville 2 -- each contest seven innings as scheduled

Despite this being a home series for the Stars, the only online write-up is via the BayBears site --

BayBears Clinch Playoff Spot after Doubleheader SplitBy Wayne Randazzo

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A doubleheader split was good enough for the BayBears on Saturday at Joe W. Davis Stadium as they advanced to the Southern League playoffs for the first time since 2004 after a 10-7 game one defeat followed by a 5-2 victory in the nightcap and a Montgomery loss to Jacksonville.

"It's awesome," said BayBears skipper Rico Brogna. "The best part is watching the guys celebrate. It's just an awesome feeling. I'm so happy for the staff and players."

Daniel Stange (S, 13) closed out the victory in game two for the BayBears (73-62, 37-30) which lowered their magic number to one over the Biscuits as he posted a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Reid Mahon (4-3) tossed two perfect frames and drove home an insurance run with an RBI single in the top of the sixth to knock home Ryan Wheeler.

Wheeler had a big night for the BayBears as he drove in three including a go-ahead two-run homer off Chris Cody (7-8) in the top of the fourth that put the BayBears up 3-2. Huntsville (67-71, 34-34) was ahead 2-0 after RBI doubles in the bottom of the third by Lee Haydel and Zelous Wheeler against starter Bryan Henry, who lasted four innings and surrendered just three hits.

In game one, the BayBears fell behind as the Stars picked up three in the first against Tom Layne, but they battled back to tie the game in the second before erupting for a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning on an opposite-field, three-run homer by Jake Elmore.

That lead was eventually squandered by the BayBears' bullpen in the bottom of the sixth as the Stars struck for six tallies, highlighted by Caleb Gindl's three-run jack off Bryan Woodall (1-4). Lucas Luetge (3-2) and Jim Henderson (S, 7) nailed down the victory to send the BayBears to their second straight loss.

The BayBears will open the South Division Championship Series on Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds against the Jacksonville Suns, who were division winners in both halves.

"The Suns are a good team," Brogna said. "We play them tough. It should be a good series. Two clubs that really play as a team. Should be a great series."

The BayBears still have two more regular season contests to play including a battle with the Stars at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon.

Huntsville Game One Box Score

Not a great outing from RH starter Andre Lamontagne -- 4.1 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 4 K, 1 HR, barely half his 88 pitches for strikes; relievers Lucas Luetge and Jim Henderson made use of GIDP's (and a clutch outfield assist from Lee Haydel -- undoubtedly with a stronger throw than Ryan Braun exhibited last night); contributions from every spot in the lineup...

Huntsville Game One Game Log

Down 7-4, the six-run 6th --

Huntsville Bottom of the 6th

  • Chris Nowak singles on a line drive to center fielder Collin Cowgill.
  • Anderson Machado reaches on force attempt, throwing error by second baseman Taylor Harbin. Chris Nowak to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Bryan Woodall replaces Tom Layne, batting 9th.
  • Lee Haydel singles on a line drive to right fielder Evan Frey. Chris Nowak scores. Anderson Machado to 2nd.
  • Anderson De La Rosa strikes out swinging.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Taylor Green replaces Lucas Luetge.
  • Taylor Green singles on a line drive to right fielder Evan Frey. Anderson Machado scores. Lee Haydel to 3rd.
  • Brett Lawrie reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by third baseman Ryan Wheeler. Lee Haydel scores. Taylor Green to 2nd.
  • Caleb Gindl homers (9) on a fly ball to right field. Taylor Green scores. Brett Lawrie scores.
  • Zelous Wheeler grounds out, second baseman Taylor Harbin to first baseman Bryan Byrne.
  • Drew T. Anderson flies out to center fielder Collin Cowgill.

Huntsville Game Two Box Score

LHP Chris Cody went all seven innings in what qualified as a quality start as two runs were unearned; Zelous Wheeler's two errors give him 37 on the season -- the 23-year-old Wheeler has a .784 OPS hitting out of the # 3 or 4 spot all season, but it'd be interesting to see exactly what his fielding deficiencies at shortstop have meant to the Stars in terms of unearned runs; Wheeler would probably be the first to tell you he's not a true shortstop, but hopefully this year's assignment benefits him in the long haul; Taylor Green hitting under .200 for August and September...
