Final: Wisconsin 7, @Burlington 3

Rattlers beat bees; secure winning road trip
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA – Chris Dennis homered and drove in four runs to give the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a lead. Jon Pokorny protected that lead by getting the final four outs for a 7-3 win over the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Community Field. The Rattlers took two out of three games in the series with Burlington and is heading home from a seven game road trip after winning four of those games.

Burlington (42-84 overall, 20-37 second half) scored first when Wisconsin starting pitcher Efrain Nieves uncorked a wild pitch with a runner at third base in the bottom of the second inning.

Cutter Dykstra celebrated his return to the lineup in style. The Rattlers third baseman was activated from the disabled list in the afternoon. In his second at bat of the game, Dykstra delivered a two-out RBI single to score Dennis from second base and tie the game 1-1.

Wisconsin’s bats got going in the top of the third inning. Kentrail Davis doubled to start the inning. One out later Khris Davis walked to put two runners on base. D’Vontrey Richardson was next and he doubled off the wall in right to score Kentrail Davis with the go ahead run. Then, Dennis launched a three-run homer to right-center and the Rattlers (55-73, 29-31) were in front 5-1.

Dennis had a hand in the two-run rally for the Rattlers in the top of the sixth. His RBI triple drove in Khris Davis. Cameron Garfield followed with an RBI single and the Rattlers were up 7-1.

Nieves stumbled a bit in the sixth inning by hitting the leadoff batter and giving up a one out single that put runners on the corners. Santo Manzanillo allowed one of the runners to score on a wild pitch, but he got the final two outs to keep Wisconsin in front 7-2.

The Bees made the game interesting in the bottom of the eighth inning. Fernando Cruz stepped up with two on and two out and singled in a run to make the score 7-3. Manzanillo was touched for another single by Julio to load the bases. The call went to the bullpen for Pokorny.

The lefty out of Kent State struck out Gerard Hall looking to end the threat. Pokorny went on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventeenth save of the season.

The Timber Rattlers franchise record for saves in a season was set in 1995. John Thompson had 19 saves in the first season of existence for the Rattlers.

Wisconsin begins a seven-game homestand with a game against the Kane County Cougars. This is the final Saturday night FOX 11 postgame fireworks display of the season. Saturday is also a Fruit Roll-Ups Fun Night. There will be Fruit Roll-Ups samples for fans 13 and up as they leave the stadium.

Game time is 6:35pm and the Rattlers will send Del Howell (3-6, 4.92) to the mound. Kane County has Jonathon Joseph (1-5, 3.35) as their scheduled starting pitcher.

If you can’t make it out to Time Warner Cable Field for the game, you can tune in to AM1280, WNAM for the broadcast starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

Wisconsin box score

After Corey Koskie, I'm always relieved when a guy comes back from a concussion in short order, so it's great to see Dykstra healthy. How about Dennis with three triples in his last ten games and seven overall? He also walked; Khris Davis was on base three times as well with three free passes. D'Vo keeps the power stroke going. Scooter Gennett also doubled. Pokorny did walk a batter in the 9th but it's good to see him have a relatively smooth outing.

Final: New Orleans 10, @Nashville 3

Sounds' win streak halted with 10-3 loss

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs belted four home runs en route to a 10-3 win over the Sounds on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, snapping Nashville's four-game winning streak.

The crowd of 6,397 on hand pushed the Sounds' seasonal attendance over the 300,000-fan plateau for the 10th straight season.

The Zephyrs' four home runs on the evening matched their highest single-game total of the year.

The bottom of the New Orleans order did the majority of the damage as the visitors' #5 through 8 hitters combined to go 11-for-19 with eight RBIs and seven runs scored on the evening.

Right-hander Brian Lawrence (11-8) worked a quality start for the Zephyrs to pick up the victory, holding the Sounds to two runs on six hits over seven innings of work.

New Orleans shortstop Brian Barden spotted the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo homer to left off Sounds starter Marty McLeary.

The Sounds loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame but were unable to score against Lawrence, as the right-hander induced a popout from Luis Cruz and an inning-ending groundout from Ray Olmedo. Nashville finished just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Zephyrs left fielder John Raynor made it a 2-0 game in the second when he led off with his second home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center off McLeary.

Nashville again had its chance to score thwarted in the bottom of the inning after putting runners on first and third with one out. Adam Stern hit a tapper back to the mound and Lawrence threw to the plate to retire Norris Hopper as he attempted to put the Sounds on the board.

The Z's tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to up their lead to 4-0. Danny Richar and Bryan Petersen led off with back-to-back doubles before catcher Chris Hatcher bounced a one-out RBI single up the middle off McLeary.

New Orleans continued to pile on in the fifth, plating five two-out runs against McLeary to chase the right-hander from the ballgame while extending the lead to 9-0. Richar and Petersen contributed RBI singles before Hatcher slugged a three-run longball to right, his second roundtripper of the year.

McLeary (6-9) took a loss for the second straight start after he surrendered a career-high nine runs on 12 hits over his 4 2/3 innings of work. The veteran had allowing eight runs in an outing several times, most recently on June 23 at Memphis.

Scott Cousins upped his hitting streak to 11 games for New Orleans in the sixth when he led off the inning with his 14th home run of the year, a line-drive solo shot to right off Sounds reliever Donovan Hand.

Joe Koshansky put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the sixth when he crushed his team-leading 22nd home run of the season, a leadoff solo shot off Lawrence. With the tater, Big Joe extended his longest hitting streak of the year to seven games.

Nashville got another run back in the seventh when Stern doubled with two outs and scored in unearned fashion when Eric Farris followed with an infield single coupled with a throwing error by Barden at shortstop.

Martin Maldonado made it a 10-3 contest in the home half of the eighth when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Cruz, who opened the inning with a single that greeted Z's reliever Brett Sinkbeil.

Infielder Johnny Raburn closed out the contest with a scoreless top of the ninth on the mound for Nashville, making his second pitching appearance of the year. Raburn has posted three scoreless innings for the Sounds this season.

Stern (3-for-5) opened the contest with a single for the Sounds to extend his longest hit streak of the year to 10 games, marking Nashville's seventh double-digit streak of 2010. The outfielder is hitting a PCL-best .375 since July 1st (48-for-128).

The teams continue the series with 6:35 p.m. meeting on Saturday. Left-hander Sam Narron (8-7, 4.24) will man the bump for the Sounds and face New Orleans spot starter Scott Strickland (4-3, 4.30), who makes his first start of the year for the Z's. The Sounds' final fireworks show of the season will follow the on-field action.

Nashville box score

Wow, Brian Lawrence! Stern's third hit was also a double; good on ya, Adam. Raburn has now pitched 11 scoreless innings in his career. That's amazing! Mat Gamel was 0-3 with two walks.

Final: Clearwater 7, @Brevard County 4

Brevard County box score

Another tough loss for the 'Tees: they had a 4-1 lead, but twin three-run innings surrendered by Mark Willinsky and Dan Meadows torpedoed their chanced. Mike Ramlow did a fine job in a spot start, allowing one run in four innings. The first four batters in the BC order--Josh Prince, Pete Fatse, Erik Komatsu, and Angel Salome--all had two hits. Prince had a particularly good night, adding a walk and smacking a triple; he also stole a base, but was picked off as well. Juan Sanchez had the opposite of a good night, 0-4 with two errors at third base.

Hit keep on coming from Brewers in win over Idaho Falls

Helena Independent Record

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho—The Helena Brewers picked up in Idaho Falls right where they left off in Casper, stomping the Chukars 14-6 Friday night.

A night after putting up season highs in hits and runs, the Brewers again registered 20 hits. Helena now has 88 hits over its last six games, which include five straight wins.

The Brewers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, and even a six-run seventh by Idaho Falls never could get the hosts close enough to do any damage. Helena was just too hot at the plate, with three different players going deep. Catcher Brent Dean had a home run in the second, Franklin Romero Jr. added a solo shot in the sixth and Brandon Sizemore stroked his sixth long ball of the season in the eighth.

Greg Hopkins, John Dishon and Rafael Neda all had three hits in the contest, and Carlos George led the team with a 4-for-5 performance. It was the shortstop’s second straight four-hit affair.

Stosh Wawrzasek picked up his second win of the season, hurling a two-hitter through five frames and striking out seven.

Ryan Bernal earned his first save of the year, giving up three hits over three innings. Jose Oviedo had the roughest night of Brewers pitchers, giving up five earned runs in just a single inning.

But the Brewers offense provided all the fireworks for the 2,137 fans in attendance. Thomas Zebroski was the only one with more than two hits for Idaho Falls, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Helena box score

Man, it's been an all-out assault on Chukars pitching the last couple days. Wawrzasek walked only one and posted a 6/2 GO/AO, so he had a great night.

Final: @AZL Dodgers 8, AZL Brewers 7

AZL Brewers box score

An exciting but ultimately frustrating game. When the Dodgers scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th to go up 8-2, it looked like things were over, but the Maryvale Crew stormed back with five runs in the 9th before coming up just short. Skyler Crawford, who must have been injured because he hadn't pitched since 7/21, started and allowed a run in an inning. Then R.J. Johnson ran into some trouble, giving up five runs in three innings while walking four and fanning none. Big Greg Holle did post a good outing, two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Kyle Dhanani had three hits, including a double, and stole a base. TJ Mittelstaedt and Steve Felix each had two hits. Tyler Roberts was 0-4 with a walk. Kevin Berard started his second game at second base.
