Thanks again to Stephen C. Smith for taking it literally upon himself to provide us with some audio for the Manatees this season! Tonight marks his final scheduled broadcast.

I do have a note into Stephen asking him how his plans may change for this evening's doubleheader, considering that it was initially scheduled to be a single broadcast with a start-time two hours later than what is now planned.

Also, MiLB.com now shows LHP Josh Romanski as the Yankees' Game One starter.

Stars win, 5-3, but West Tenn wins as well, so the small playoff hopes get smaller.

(Yes, we root for wins for the locals regardless of what the purists will say about player development is all that matters, so please don't chime in on that slant.)

Just when I was starting to warm on Zelous Wheeler as a utility prospect I see that he committed his 34th error on the season today. Ooof.

Fiers has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen since coming off of the DL. I wonder if that is because of the increase in innings over last year. Then again, college pitchers often go to the bullpen their first season or two because of the amount of innings they pitch in college, so I wonder if he pitched out of the bullpen last year not because they view him as a reliever but because of the innings he pitched in college.

Final: @Huntsville 5, Montgomery 3

Drew Anderson sparks Stars past Biscuits

Mark McCarter/Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE -- Journeyman Drew Anderson's quest for another crack at the major leagues keeps building momentum.

The 29-year-old Anderson, who had a brief stint with the Brewers in 2006, was responsible for every run in Huntsville's 5-3 win over Montgomery Wednesday afternoon, scoring three times and driving in two more in front of an announced crowd of 504.

Anderson had a two-run triple to ignite a three-run first then a pair of doubles. He is batting .308 in his last 10 games, with 10 runs scored and 10 RBIs.

The Stars, who open a four-game series at Mobile tonight, remain 4 1/2 games behind West Tenn in the Southern League North wild-card race after the Diamond Jaxx tripped Tennessee 5-4.

Huntsville starter Mark Rogers struck out eight in five innings but he walked in two runs in the third and left with the game tied at 3-all. Chris Cody allowed only one hit in two innings, fanning three, and Michael Fiers got the save with two innings of one-hit relief.

Biscuits starter Alex Cobb struck out 13 Stars in six innings, but was victimized by Anderson's two-run triple in the first followed by Andy Machado's sacrifice fly. Chuckie Caufield doubled home Anderson in the sixth to help chase Cobb, then Taylor Green doubled home Anderson in the eighth.

Huntsville box score

Rogers allowed six hits, walked four, hit a batter, and had one wild pitch. 54 of his 89 pitches were strikes. Fiers struck out two and walked one. Anderson added two doubles to his triple to cap a really fine day. Brett Lawrie was 0-3 with a walk and his 29th steal, Green also walked, and Caleb Gindl was 0-3.

Huntsville play-by-play

Rogers' troubled 3rd:

Montgomery Top of the 3rd

Hi, we moved the final Manatees webcast to Thursday August 26 for a few reasons.

The weather forecast suggested tonight's doubleheader probably would be rained out too. As it turned out, the rain hit all around us and we got in Game #1. Game #2 is under way.

The second reason was that I wanted to get photos and video of Kyle Heckathorn. This was his final start at home.

I have video of Kyle and all the Manatees' scoring in Game #1. Hopefully I can post most of it tomorrow.

Assuming we play one game tomorrow, the final webcast will be at 6:50 PM EDT.

Final (game one): @Brevard County 8, Tampa 3 (7 innings)

Brevard County box score

Thanks to the abbreviated length, Kyle Heckathorn notched a complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits while fanning five and walking none. He posted an 8/6 GO/AO. The Manatees put up six runs in the 3rd, and though Heck immediately gave three back in the next half-inning, it turned out to be more than enough. Erik Komatsu and Shawn Zarraga had big nights; Komatsu homered and doubled, and Zarraga was 3-3 with his third homer. Sergio Miranda, Angel Salome, and Sean Halton each added two hits as well. Juan Sanchez entered the game fairly early, replacing Scott Krieger, and contributed by throwing a runner out at home. Josh Prince was 1-3 but was caught stealing and committed an error.

Brevard County play-by-play

The innings of interest:

Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd

  • Josh Prince singles on a line drive to left fielder Raymond Kruml.
  • Pitcher Change: Preston Claiborne replaces Shaeffer Hall.
  • With Matt Cline batting, Josh Prince caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Mitch Abeita to shortstop Jose Pirela.

  • Melky Mesa flies out to right fielder Juan Sanchez.

  • Anderson Feliz singles on a fly ball to center fielder Erik Komatsu. Zoilo Almonte to 2nd.
  • Mitch
Abeita reaches on force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Josh
Prince. Zoilo Almonte to 3rd. Anderson Feliz to 2nd.
  • Jack
Rye doubles (17) on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.

There is so much to be said for being economical with pitches and for being able to get through a lineup a third time as a starter over and over again. Being economical doesn't always mean being successful. Kyle Heckathorn's season has been fantastic, it really has.

Josh Romanski rudely greeted to high-A by the Manatees -- it wasn't a blowout inning, but a three-run 1st ended Romanski's night. Unfortunately, Cody Scarpetta couldn't take advantage. Not a birthday to remember for Cody -- neither starter made it through two innings.

Ash really needs to provide an update on RHP Alex Periard, for instance

-- he's on the 40-man roster, has only one option left, and seemingly

could never be ready for Milwaukee-only action in 2012, so his inclusion

on the 40-man at this time is unnecessary, outside of the fact he could

be claimed by another club. Of course, that organization would face

the same need to expose him to waivers eventually as well.

We have a Periard sighting! Started tonight for the Arizona Brewers and gave up four runs while only recording one out, but hey, at least he's healthy enough to go.

Final (game two): Tampa 5, @Brevard County 3 (7 innings)

Brevard County box score

It's already detailed above, but neither birthday boy Cody Scarpetta nor former Brewers farmhand Josh Romanski pitched well. Trey Watten came on for Scarpetta and Wattened up the place: 7/1 GO/AO in 3.1 innings of work. Sergio Miranda cracked a two-run homer, and Erik Komatsu was 1-3 with a walk. Juan Sanchez threw out a runner at home, just as he did in the first game.

Brevard County play-by-play

The two frames you need to know about:

Brevard County Bottom of the 1st
  • Matt Cline singles on a ground ball to right fielder Zoilo Almonte.
  • Sergio Miranda homers (3) on a fly ball to left field. Matt Cline scores.
  • Erik Komatsu walks.
  • Angel Salome doubles (16) on a line drive to left fielder Raymond Kruml. Erik Komatsu to 3rd.
  • Sean Halton grounds out, third baseman Bradley Suttle to first baseman Myron Leslie. Erik Komatsu scores.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a ground ball to third baseman Bradley Suttle.
  • Juan
Sanchez grounds out, second baseman Jose Pirela to first baseman Myron
Leslie. Angel Salome to 3rd. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd.
  • Sean McCraw walks.
  • Josh Prince strikes out swinging.

Tampa Top of the 2nd
  • Zoilo Almonte flies out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard in foul territory.
  • Myron Leslie lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Jose Gil homers (4) on a fly ball to left field.
  • Trent Lockwood walks.
  • Raymond Kruml singles on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Trent Lockwood to 2nd.
  • Jose Pirela singles on a line drive to center fielder Erik Komatsu. Trent Lockwood to 3rd. Raymond Kruml to 2nd.
  • Bradley
Suttle doubles (32) on a line drive to right fielder Juan Sanchez.
Trent Lockwood scores. Raymond Kruml scores. Jose Pirela scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Trey Watten replaces Cody Scarpetta.
  • Melky Mesa strikes out swinging.

I'm guessing Sanchez misplayed this ball initially, and though the outfield assist did prevent the inside-the-park homer, the play as a whole probably cost the 'Tees a run. Given the fielding adventures that bookended it, must have been a frustrating stretch for Watten:

Tampa Top of the 4th
  • Trent Lockwood grounds out, second baseman Matt Cline to first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Raymond Kruml reaches on fielding error by first baseman Sean Halton. Raymond Kruml to 2nd.
  • Jose
Pirela triples (13) on a line drive to right fielder Juan Sanchez.
Raymond Kruml scores. Jose Pirela out at home, right fielder Juan
Sanchez to second baseman Matt Cline to third baseman Sergio Miranda.
  • Bradley Suttle reaches on throwing error by shortstop Josh Prince.
  • Melky Mesa grounds out, shortstop Josh Prince to first baseman Sean Halton.

Thornburg cruised through the first three innings this evening for Helena, retiring the first 9 batters he faced. He then proceeded to walk three batters in the 4th and gave up a solo shot to open the 5th, the only hit and run that he would allow in his 5 innings of work (his longest outing of his so-far pro career). Steve Wendt mentioned that Thornburg has been throwing in the mid-90s this summer (no radar gun available tonight) while tossing a spike curveball and what he called a 'bugs bunny' changeup.

The Helena staff really has my interest piqued, and I believe it has been Invader that has been offering his support for the 2010 draft class even without Covey, which I'm starting to subscribe to (although I recognize that a college pitching heavy class better have good results in the Pioneer League). I followed Mass' suggestion to buy MiLB's TV package for the month to get the Chukars' feed this coming weekend. Being the dork that I am, I already mapped out the projected pitching matchups (assuming recent trends hold) for the Idaho Falls series for those that also want to see what these arms are all about:

Fri: Frederickson/Nelson

Sat: Miller

Sun: Ross

Mon: Cravy/Thornburg

Final: Wisconsin 7, @Burlington 4

Rattlers win third straight

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers continued their late season roll with a 7-4 victory over the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night. Michael Marseco drove in three runs and Adrian Rosario go the final four outs to nail down Wisconsin’s third consecutive victory.

Marseco started the scoring for the Rattlers (54-72 overall, 28-30 second half). The bases were loaded with two outs in the top of the second and the shortstop snuck a single through the middle of the diamond to score a pair of runs. Later in the frame, Kentrail Davis drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run for a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Austin Stockfisch doubled in a run. He scored from third later in the inning when Marseco beat out an infield single and Wisconsin had a 5-0 advantage.

Burlington (41-83, 19-36) chipped away with a single runs in the third and fourth innings against Wisconsin starting pitcher Hiram Burgos. But, the Rattlers got both of those runs back with two runs in the top of the sixth. D’Vontrey Richardson doubled to start the inning. Kentrail Davis tripled Richardson home. Then, Hunter Morris singled to knock in Davis and the Rattlers went back up by five runs.

Burgos had two outs and a runner at first in the bottom of the sixth, but gave up consecutive RBI doubles to Jake Kuebler and Ben Theriot to let Burlington back to within 7-4.

The Bees got a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh off Burgos and Wisconsin went to the bullpen. Reliever Matt Costello entered and got Fernando Cruz to hit into a double play on the first pitch he threw. After a walk, Costello got the final out with a strikeout.

In the eighth, the Bees got the leadoff man aboard on an error. Costello got the next two batters to ground into force outs at second. But, he would walk Theriot to bring the tying run to the plate.

Rosario, who got the final three outs of the combined no-hitter in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night, came out of the bullpen again on Wednesday night and did the job. The righty struck out Jose Bonilla to extinguish the Burlington threat in the eighth. Then, Rosario pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his second save in as many nights.

The series continues on Thursday night at Community Field. Maverick Lasker (7-4, 3.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Burlington will counter with Keaton Hayenga (1-12, 6.75). Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the play-by-play action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame show at 6:10pm.

Wisconsin box score

Burgos only struck out one, but walked none; he also posted an excellent 12/4 GO/AO. D'Vo, Ke. Davis, and Chris Dennis all had the power/patience game going with a extra-base hit and a walk (two in Dennis's case). Dennis even stole a base for fun, his eighth. Khris Davis was 0-4 with a walk and three punch-outs, and of course the Scooter Gennett watch continues. Adrian Rosario has quietly (well, until yesterday, maybe) been pretty good in relief for the Rattlers.
