HTC Evo v Epic

sbrylski

Making the jump to smartphone. Settled on Sprint. The question... HTC Evo, or Samsung Epic?

The Epic might be harder to get, and would be $250 compared to the Evo's price of $200.

Anyone want to chime in and help with the decision?

I've got the Evo and was heavily considering switching to the Epic but decided against it.

I guess I just wouldn't be able to justify the extra $50. The Epic has a much nicer screen, better 3D gaming, and slide-out keyboard while the Evo is thinner, has a better camera, and a bigger screen. I guess you should choose based on that.

Either way, you will not be disappointed with either.

I don't think I could ever buy a phone without a real keyboard. IMO, the Evo is way too huge, but I haven't seen the other in person so I'm not sure how they compare.

Have you considered any other phones? I believe Sprint makes you pay an extra $10/mo for 4G on those, even though you can't really use it anywhere yet.

I'm okay with paying an extra $10 a month for one of those two.

The Epic seems to have everything you would need. The only thing is, I like the look of the EVO much better.

The Epic looks almost like a toy next to the super sleek and professional looking EVO, in my opinion. And that's important to me, I want to like how it looks.

That's what I thought prior to purchasing the Evo. But when I actually physically compared the Evo and put it on top of my old phone it was barely bigger in total size, but the screen is immensely bigger. I thought typing would be a problem with an on-screen keyboard, but when you hold the phone horizontally the keyboard expands the horizontal length of the phone and the letters are plenty big enough if not larger than on a real keyboard.

Can't say enough good things about the Evo. No problem at all with dropped calls, and the GPS system is fantastic. Battery life can be an issue - just make sure you don't have things running in the background (WiFi, 4G, Navigation, etc.) that don't need to be. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

EVO owners: How's the screen color and brightness?

One of the things that bother me about the reviews I read is that the screen always loses out to other phones, especially the Epic. But I wonder if that's only because they're being compared side-by-side. As in, maybe it's not as good as the screen on the Epic, but it wouldn't be noticeable if you didn't have an Epic in your other hand.

You're absolutely right about the Evo's screen. The screen color and brightness look great when you're just looking at it. When you compare it against the mighty Samsung Galaxy S and iPhone 4 screens, as far as color and resolution - sure it loses -, but the screen in and of itself is absolutely beautiful; not to mention huge.

As far as it being too big, I really don't think that's an issue and I was one who was genuinely concerned with that before I purchased it. The Epic has basically the same dimensions despite having a smaller screen, so there's no advantage there. The Evo is slim enough that it still fits in your pocket just fine even with the large overall size.

I will say that it is hard coming from a real keyboard to an extent. I went from an LG Rumor, to a Palm Pre, and then finally made the switch to software keyboards. I have some of the biggest sausage fingers in the land, and I can type just as fast and accurate now that I've gotten used to it. Drunk-texting is near impossible, but I'm not going to blame HTC on that one... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Not to mention that programs like swype make it REALLY easy to avoid fat-fingering texts.

Well the Evo continues to amaze me. Today I got a "5 minute warning before draft" text from a buddy of mine warning me of our fantasy football draft. I, of course, received this while at work at my part-time job at Walgreens. The Evo ran, and quite well I may add, the full draft application, with chat and all, in flash format and allowed me to stealthy complete my entire draft today during work.
