Here is a Link to some pretty cool highlight packages of Yi. He is definately fearless attacking the basket.

Howard's article is wrong, he simply does not know the rules. The previous post is correct, the Bucks can lose his rights if Yi isn't paid to play basketball between this past draft and the next draft. In addition to playing for a pro team in China, if he is compensated to play for the national team, that would also disqualify him from re-entering the draft.

that would be a big blow to the bucks to not get anything for Yi and not get the rights to him. I think he is very tradeable so if the bucks get the idea he would rather hang out for a season than play for the bucks, they may have to trade him to the highest bidder.

Thanks for clearing up the rules, I was not aware of that rule either.

Someone e-mailed the D-List this morning about that rule and they didn't seem to know anything about it either. I've seen it referred to in various places, however.

That's the same rule that allowed the Bucks to keep the rights to Rashard Griffith. Because he was being paid to play basketball, the Buck retained his rights.

Whether or not Yi signs seems to boil down to a few things.

- Just how badly Yi wants to play in the NBA this year. If he really, really wants to play this year, he's gonna have to suck it up and play in Milwaukee.

- If he really doesn't want to play for the Bucks, he'll need to weigh playing in Milwaukee for four years and becoming a FA against not playing this year and how that affects his draft stock. And he'll also need to consider he may re-enter next years draft and get picked by another team that he doesn't want to play for.

I don't think Yi wants to play in Milwaukee, but I suspect that he'll sign so that he can be a FA four years from now rather than five, six or seven years from now.

I should clarify.. the D-List guys knew about the R. Griffith facet of the rule and actually referred to Griffith. They did not seem to be aware of any way in which Yi could re-enter the draft, however. They finally concluded that it couldn't be true because the Bucks would never have drafted the guy if there was any possibility that they would lose his rights.

They apparently underestimate the Bucks.

Don Walker must be reading Brewerfan.net. He has an article which covers the subject of Yi draft rights. If Yi does have a current signed contract with the Chinese team, which you think he would, then that would probably mean that he is not eligible for next years NBA draft.

So I stand by what I said a couple pages back. Yi has plenty of leverage. You need to realize how strong the Chinese govt is in these matters. If they want him to sit out and re-enter the draft next year, that's what he'll do.

If they threaten to do that, then Harris can either call the bluff or trade him. However, I'm not sure it will come to that. I think they were shocked the Bucks didn't bow to their wishes. Now that it's done, they are PR savy enough to know Yi needs to enter the ;league on a positive note.

I just don't know how much yet another 15 points/game scorer with no defense or toughness can help this team get deep in to the plaoyoffs anyhow.

The Chinese government is going to want Yi to play basketball this year to refine his skills and build some buzz for the 2008 Olympics which are being held in China.

I'm pretty sure that Yi will be in the NBA next year and odds are very high it's with the Bucks.I just can't see him sitting out a full season and then enering the draft next year where he'll still have no control over who drafts him.

Yi and his camp could sit him out and then next year a team they don't prefer drafts him, what's he going to do,sit out a second year?No way

All i was saying Al is that Williams has limited options on the free agent market,as do most of the free agents because there are only a few teams with the cap space to make an offer.

Now many teams have their mid level exception available which is locked into a 5/yr 33ish million dollar contract, but Mo really doesn't have any leverage to pit teams vs each other to and get into a semi-bidding war over him.

If Mo wants anything more than that set MLE,he pretty much has to take any offer the Bucks make that is higher.Pretty much the only other team that had cap space to make an offer higher than the MLE for Mo and had a need at PG was Memphis and they drafted Conley.

Granted Mo should be set for life if what he gets is around that mid level exception,he just became a free agent in a bad offseason where so few teams had cap space and it hurt his bargaining position to the degree where the Bucks likely have no real competitors to outbid them. His only reason to leave now would be location/lifestyle choice because all the teams that would still persue him can only offer the exact same 5yr/33 million dollar contract and i'd assume the Bucks will go a little bithigher.

Yeah, the 2008 Olympics is a huge deal to the Chinese govt, they've spent billions on this event and on their olympic athletes, they're expecting their athletics to do better in this huge event for their motherland.

I think the Chinese govt is more concern with Yi's NBA playing time than money, no point having him rot on the bench. The concerns of Yi's marketing and earnings are from his handlers which are his CBA team owner, Nike and agents appointed by his handlers. Frankly, I do think Yi is being exploited by these people as a huge percentage of his earnings goes to them, as well as the profits generated from him.

Yep

I do believe Yi would prefer to play somewhere else, but not to the point of wasting a year of his NBA career. His handlers and Fagen in particular have different motives and that would be endorsement cash.

In the end though,i think Yi will play in the NBA this year and likely with the Bucks. It's not as if Yi can be certain that if he sat out this season, that he'd get drafted next year by a team he wanted.

I think if the bucks loose this draft pick, and he re-enters the draft, teams like Minnesota will have to think hard before taking him.

If I were a team like Minnesota, and I still wanted him after he sat out an entire year, I'd pick him. If Yi truly wants to play in the NBA, would he really risk sitting out a second year so he can be a FA and go where he wants? Missing two years of basketball would have a huge affect on his game, and he's got to know that.

I was thinking sort of along the same line. Yi and his "homies" might need some minutes assured to him. Role explained (not setting 10,000 screens for the guards) and an opportunity to be comfortable. If that doesn't work, then Larry needs to deal. One would think he could and should use his Dad (or hire him as an assistant coach) to seal the deal.

JSOnline story about the meeting Yi had with Harris and Larry K and comments on Yi's dominant game last night.

New Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni got a good idea about Yi in the forward's first 29 minutes of summer-league play.

"He was more physical than we read," Iavaroni said. "You have to scheme him. He's very confident out there. He showed no jitters."

"Defensively, he's a quick jumper and he can get out on pick-and-rolls," Harris said. "He's got great hands, he's got quick feet on the offensive end.

"He's got a post game; he can shoot it right-handed or left-handed. He can step out and make shots. He's got a great sense for the game. He's a (true) power forward."

For Time Warner digital subscribers, or anybody else with NBATV, that game will be replayed at noon today. I have my DVR set. Its channel 140 for those in the Fox Vally. I didn't even realize I had NBATV until now.
