Is Komatsu best hitting prospect in the FSL?/ Ranked 20 spots too low in power 50?

molitor fan

The thing with the FSL is that hitting stats are severely skewed. Thus, I think hitting stats like the ones Komatsu is putting up this year get overlooked. The 22 year old outfielder is 2nd in the league in OPS, (trailing only a 25 year old DH), has decent speed, and apparently is decent defensively. He is 25th in the latest power 50, but this kind of season is really rather extraordinary.

Komatsu is going to receive a nice bump in the next Power 50, but if you're expecting 20 spots, you might be disappointed. In order to crack the top 10, I would need to know more about his defense in CF. If he can play well there, he'll be amongst the top prospects pretty quick. If he projects as more of a corner guy in the big leagues, I don't know that he has enough power to become a starter. We'll see. I like him a lot.

He also really sucked last year. No one defended him then http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.

As Toby noted, he did enjoy a big bump in the P50 not only last month, but also this month. He needs to show more power to go up further than where he's at currently IMHO.

I'm not sure how any results in 79 AB can be used to say he sucked. He was injured most of the year.

His slugging .431 isn't great, but it compares to a max of .498 in the league. So in that light, its not so bad (10th in the league).

Next year, he may be someone to watch for a fast riser. I would bet he is at AA with Schafer, so will probably play more RF/LF than CF (unfortunately).

Did you miss the smiley face next to that comment?

I think having him where he is now (16th) is actually very complimentary.

No, I saw the smiley, but I guess I figured true sarcasm would be blue. Even with the smiley, I thought you were defending his current P50 position by seriously saying he had a bad year last year. I was surprised when I first read it, because it wasn't a (serious) comment you would normally make...

BTW, 16th is a good spot for him. My comment was that we could see him as a fast riser in AA next year, as I think his SLG will improve to OK (for a LF/RF) with still a nice OBP.

To answer your question, no. Steve Braun is. He's hitting a cool .125/.238/.170/.408 this season!

I really want Komatsu to succeed, just as many here do. That K/BB ratio just keeps getting better every day (well, not today, actually).
