Final: @DSL Cardinals 7, DSL Brewers 6 (11 innings)

DSL Brewers box score

The Brewers scored three in the 8th to take a 6-4 lead, but the Cards got two in the bottom of the 8th to tie it and won it in the 11th. 18-year-old Carlos Sosa posted the best line among pitchers, striking out four in three scoreless innings, though he did allow the tying run to score and was thus charged with a blown save. Ronny Puello had a second straight huge day, homering and doubling as part of his 4-5 day. Jose Pena had two hits, and Alejandro Mendoza doubled and walked. Mendoza, and 18-year-old shortstop, has shown a nice eye so far in his brief pro career, walking 10 times in 40 plate appearances.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

The Brewers wasted a chance to take the lead in the top of the 11th:

Sean Halton and Matt Cline also doubled, and Erik Komatsu singled before being pinch-hit for in the 7th.

Beloit bombards Rattlers

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Beloit Snappers put up a big number in the top of the third inning on Wednesday night and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers couldn’t respond. Beloit scored eight times in the third inning to blow open a close game. Reggie Williams, who homered in the inning, had three hits and was a double shy of the cycle. Michael Gonzales drove in four runs and the Snappers moved to within a game of a playoff spot with their 14-7 win over the Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field.

Beloit (62-55 overall, 25-23 second half) quickly got out of the gate. Williams tripled on the second pitch of the game. James Beresford was next and he singled in Williams for a 1-0 lead. Beresford would steal second and move to third on a fly out to left. Then, Rattlers starting pitcher Damon Krestalude threw a wild pitch to let Beresford score for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin (24-27, 50-69) scored an unearned run in the first. Scooter Gennett reached on an error. Two outs later, Hunter Morris doubled down the left field line to get Gennett home.

The Rattlers took the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the second inning. They loaded the bases with one out on a single by D’Vontrey Richardson, a walk to Joey Paciorek, and a single by Michael Marseco. Gennett singled in the tying run and kept the bases loaded. Then, Kentrail Davis put Wisconsin in front with a sacrifice fly.

Beloit stormed back in the third inning. Krestalude walked the leadoff batter and gave up a single to the next hitter. The Rattlers starting pitcher got Steven Liddle to popout for the first out of the frame. The onslaught started with the next batter. Danny Rams doubled in both runners on base and the Snappers took a 4-3 lead. Then, Lane Ray doubled but, Rams only took third. Gonzales sent a high fly to medium center field for what appeared to be a routine out. However, centerfielder Richardson lost the ball in the lights and the ball dropped in well to Richardson’s right for a two-run double. Yorby Martinez followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Michael Harrington singled in Gonzales and chased Krestalude from the game.

Santo Manzanillo relieved Krestalude and gave up a three-run homer to Williams. That made six consecutive hits for the Snappers to turn a 3-2 Rattlers lead into a 10-3 Beloit advantage.

Ray doubled in a run in the sixth inning. Gonzales had a more conventional two-run double later in the inning. He would score on a single by Harrington and the Snappers were up 14-3.

Wisconsin got a single run in the sixth on an infield grounder and another run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch. Chris Dennis doubled in a run in the bottom of the ninth and Cameron Garfield followed with an RBI single, but the Rattlers would not get any closer.

Kane County and Clinton, the two teams tied for the two Western Division playoff spots in the second half, both lost on Wednesday night. So, the Rattlers are still only 3-1/2 games out of a playoff spot. However, Beloit is one game out and the Peoria Chiefs, who also won on Wednesday, is two games behind Kane County and Clinton.

Game two of the series between the Rattlers and the Snappers is Thursday night. Hiram Burgos (4-5, 3.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Pedro Guerra (1-0, 2.45) is set to go for the Beloit. Game time is 7:05pm.

Thursday night is a WIXX Thirsty Thursday. There are 22 oz. sodas and 16 oz. beers available for $2. Plus, the first 1,000 fans into the stadium will receive a poster of Kentrail Davis from Express Convenience Centers.

Additionally, Thursday is Military Appreciation Night. Current military personnel and veterans with an ID receive a free ticket to the game. There is also a special group rate available for their family members military.

If you can’t make it out to the ballpark, you may tune into the game on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The game will also be available to Time Warner Cable subscribers on Sports 32.

Wisconsin box score

So, how about that Stars game? Gennett had two hits, Khris Davis doubled and walked, as did Dennis. Richardson tripled, singled, and walked, but also struck out twice. Paciorek added a triple to his walk as well.

Wisconsin play-by-play

Kentrail Davis was hit by a pitch in the 4th, took his next turn at bat in the 6th, but then was replaced by Erik Miller in the 7th. Just giving his hamstring a rest in a a blowout?

Stars Close To Wild Card

Connor Shreve, Huntsville Stars

The Huntsville Stars set season highs Wednesday night at Regions Field in beating up on the Birmingham Barons 17-4.

Taylor Green extended his team RBI lead, now at 75, with six runs knocked in as part of a perfect 5-5 night from the plate. Green helped spur the team to the season's best run output (17) and hit total (22).

Birmingham attempted to take advantage of two Stars miscues in the second which built a 2-1 home club lead. But the Barons luck was not enough for a bullpen that has been shaky all season long. The Stars brought ten batters to the plate in a six-run fifth inning that only proved to be the beginning of the Stars scoring frenzy.

Green's 11th home run added three runs to the sixth inning total of five. The rest of the offense would not be outdone, continuing to gush through the nozzle that is the Barons' pen until the final out mercifully ended a contest that neared the three and one half hour mark. Not one offensive player left the field without at least one hit.

Overshadowed perhaps was the work of Huntsville hurler Michael Bowman, who rebounded from a rough performance last time out to pick up his ninth win of the year. Bowman gave up only the two unearned runs on seven hits. He picked up three punch outs and gave out two free passes to first base.

Huntsville also received some help from the division and wild card leaders and now sit 2.5 games back of the wild card heading into Thursday's game two. The Stars rotation is set up well; Mark Rogers (coming off the DL soon; blister) and Amaury Rivas are set to throw at some point in the next three days.

Thursday's game begins at 7:05 (CDT) on the Stars Radio Network and www.huntsvillestars.com.

Defense betrays Brewers in loss to Casper

By AMBER KUEHN, Helena Independent Record

As they have so many times this season, the Helena Brewers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning.

But Shea Vucinich, who is hitless in the series against Casper, grounded out to shortstop Jeff Squier as the Ghosts held on to win their second straight Pioneer League contest, 8-6, Wednesday night at Kindrick Legion Field.

On a night when the Brewers pitching staff was as good as it has been, striking out 16, the defense self-destructed. Helena (27-27, 8-8 second half) has now committed eight errors over the last two games.

“We make the plays in the field we win that ball game,” Helena manager Joe Ayrault said. “We had a couple balls lost in the outfield and one with the bases loaded definitely hurt us.”

With Helena leading 3-2 following Cody Hawn’s second home run of the series, Brewers pitcher Rob Currie relieved Austin Ross in the top of the sixth. Ross had a career night, striking out a season-best 10 and giving up just four hits and two earned runs, but was pulled when his pitch count hit 81.

The Ghosts took advantage of the new arm, hitting three singles off Currie (1-2) to load the bases. Then, with two outs and three on, Rafael Ortega hit a bases-clearing double to right field to help Casper regain the lead. John Dishon made a diving play on the ball but couldn’t get it in the glove.

“Sometimes, you’ve kind of gotta get lucky,” Casper manager Tony Diaz said referring to that ball by Ortega that dropped for a double. “But I always tell the guys, for you to get lucky, you’ve gotta make contact, then something may happen. We did that tonight.”

The Brewers tied it up at 5-all in their half of the inning with a two-run single by catcher Gerald Ogrinc, but the visitors tacked on three more in the eighth. The Ghosts (26-29, 9-8) outhit Helena 11-6.

“You can’t expect to win too many ballgames when you do that, get outhit and make more errors than they do,” the Brewers skipper said.

Ortega, who entered the game in the league’s top five in hits, stolen bases and on-base percentage, was 3 for 5 with four RBIs to up his average to .376.

“He’s just a solid hitter,” Ayrault said of the Casper outfielder. “For a young guy (Ortega is 19) he’s got a good approach at the plate. He just sprays balls all over the field.”

Casper reliever Kenneth Roberts (3-1) earned his third win of the season. The southpaw set down six straight before giving up a double to Brandon Sizemore, who then came home on a wild pitch to trim the deficit. Currie recorded his first blown save, combined with his first defeat of the season.

“Tonight we were able to really execute in key situations,” Diaz said. “When you are able to do that as a team, you put yourself in a position to win ballgames.”

DIAMOND NOTES: Helena infielder Connor Lind was promoted to Class A Wisconsin, after Cutter Dykstra took a ball to the head and was placed on the disabled list. Lind will likely be a backup in Wisconsin ... Casper’s Will Swanner was activated before Wednesday’s game after signing with the Colorado Rockies five days earlier. The 15th-round draft pick was committed to Pepperdine but chose instead to join the Rockies organization. The catcher was the designated hitter Wednesday and was 2 for 5 with a run scored in his pro debut.

Despite loss, Timber Rattlers don't lose ground in Midwest League West Division playoff chase

By Jim Oskola, Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE — Not much good came out of Wednesday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Beloit Snappers.

Not much can in a 14-7 loss other than perhaps this:

Despite the setback, the Rattlers did not lose any ground to either Kane County or Clinton in the Midwest League West Division wild card race.

The Rattlers trail the Cougars and LumberKings by 3½ games. The Rattlers did lose a game in the standings to Beloit and Peoria.

The Snappers lead the Rattlers by 2½ games. The Chiefs lead Wisconsin by 1½ games.

"Go out there tomorrow and get our work in," Rattlers manager Jeff Isom said following the loss. "We'll take our batting practice and try to get the next two. We're right in the middle of a playoff run and we're doing everything we can. Unfortunately, we hit a speed bump."

Like speed bumps in the highway, you hit them and move on.

"I think the most important thing to know is that we have 19 games left," Wisconsin shortstop Michael Marseco said. "We still have a shot to make the playoffs. Bad nights are going to happen. As long as you have another chance to redeem yourself tomorrow and still have a shot at making the playoffs, I don't think it's a total failure as long as you learn something."

Rattlers first baseman Chris Dennis said one has to take the loss the same way one takes an at-bat.

"We've played a hundred-some games," he said. "We still got a couple more to play (against Beloit). You can't let one at-bat effect your next at-bat or your future at-bats because you've got tons of them coming."

Dennis said he and his teammates will show up for today's game and do the work that will garner a win.

"I think Wednesday, it was just mental preparation," he said. "We didn't come mentally prepared to win. Hopefully, we come ready to go Thursday."

Factoring in the loss, the Rattlers have won six of their last nine games.

"We've been playing a lot better," Marseco said. "We've been swinging it good, pitching it well, minus tonight. As long as we keep playing as a team and battling one through nine, all of our starters give us a good outing, we have a shot to make the playoffs and at the end of the year, that's what it's all about."

It's important for the Rattlers to win the next two games against Beloit at Fox Cities Stadium before they embark on a seven-game road trip to Cedar Rapids and Burlington.

Winning those two games could prove difficult with the Snappers having won 11 of 15 games against Wisconsin this season.

"Some teams give us fits, others give us little ones and some give us big ones," Isom said. "Beloit has had our number. We just have to take care of our business."
