Looking forward to seeing if Burgos can continue his string of nice performances.

Gamel with two OF assists tonight. Maybe his arm needed to be unleashed, not harnessed??

Dykstra with three doubles from the lead-off spot for WI.

Can't get the BC box to work. Hopefully Hecky was decent. I know he left the game w/o a chance at the win, but the damage didn't seem to bad.

Final: Salt Lake 9, @Nashville 4

Bees sting Sounds on Saturday, 9-4

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nick Gorneault smacked two home runs to propel the Salt Lake Bees over the Nashville Sounds with a 9-4 victory at historic Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game set.

Dropping the first two games of the series to Salt Lake, the Sounds have now lost 11 of their last 17 games and trail the first-place Iowa Cubs by 6.5 games.

Gorneault went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored in the game, missing the cycle by a triple. Ryan Vogelsong (1-2) tossed a quality start in his first visit to historic Greer Stadium since the 2003 PCL postseason. The veteran right-hander allowed two runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings for the win.

The Bees took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as former Sound and 2001 PCL All-Star Luis Figueroa and Nick Gorneault cranked consecutive one-out doubles off Sounds starter Chuck Lofgren. Figueroa was a 2001 PCL All-Star for Nashville. Bees center fielder Terry Evans cranked his team-leading 14th home run over the left field wall in the next inning to give Salt Lake a 2-0 lead.

The Sounds plated their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Norris Hopper walked to leadoff the frame, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Ryan Budde, and then scored on a Martin Maldonado infield groundout to trim the lead to 2-1.

Gorneault followed with his first homer of the game that made it 3-1, his sixth of the season.

Nashville scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to again come with one run. Mat Gamel smacked a deep ball to right center that missed a home run by a couple of feet, causing the slugger to stop at second with a double. Gamel moved to third on an Erick Almonte infield groundout and scored as Luis Cruz hit a lazy fly ball down the right field line just over the first baseman's reach.

Salt Lake put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh by plating four runs for a 7-2 lead. Mitch Stetter entered the game and gave up a walk and four singles as the Bees scored the first two runs. Later in the frame with two outs and the bases juiced, Brandon Kintzler relieved Stetter and surrendered a two-run single to Dwayne Bailey. As two more runs scored on the play to put Salt Lake up by four runs, Gamel threw out Budde from right field at third base to end the inning.

Nashville got a run back in the next frame, as Carlos Gomez led off the inning with a walk, stole second base, and then scored on an infield groundout from Gamel.

The Bees added insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Gorneault belted his second home run off the guitar-shaped scoreboard off Chris Smith. The two-run long ball was his second of the game and third of the series.

Joe Koshansky singled home Almonte for the club's lone score in the bottom of the ninth inning.

In his first start since coming off the disabled list, Lofgren fell to 7-7 after allowing three runs on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts in three innings pitched. David Johnson fanned three while matching his season-high of three shutout innings in relief.

Stetter was touched for four runs in 2/3 of an inning in the game, as the left-hander has recorded a 13.51 ERA in his last six outings (6.2 IP). Kintzler pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and walking one.

Almonte posted the only multi-hit performance for Nashville with three hits. Gamel made two outfield assists in his fourth career game in the outfield.

The Sounds and Bees will play the third game of a four game series at 6:35 pm CT on Sunday evening at historic Greer Stadium. Right-hander Tim Dillard (3-5, 4.88) will make the start for Nashville against Salt Lake right-hander Fernando Rodriguez (4-4, 5.27).

Cruz had an RBI single; you can listen to it here. Gamel finished 1-5, and Gomez was 0-3 with two walks.

Final: @Brevard County 7, Lakeland 4

'Tees salvage series finale with Lakeland

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County

Manatees snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 7-4

win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Space Coast Stadium in front of

1,741 fans.

The Manatees (55-62 overall, 28-20 second half) broke a 4-4 tie in

the bottom of seventh, by scoring three runs in the inning. Lakeland

(59-57, 22-24) helped Brevard County's cause by committing two errors as

the Manatees sent nine hitters to the plate in the frame.

Brock Kjeldgaard led the way at the plate for Brevard County, as he was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.

Due to a 49 minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth, Manatees

starting pitcher Kyle Heckathorn went just four innings and allowed two

earned runs on five hits, while striking out three. Mike Ramlow came in

after the delay and went three innings and also allowed two earned runs

on five hits.

Brevard County jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, thanks

to a two-out two-run triple by Matt Cline and with Sergio Miranda up,

Cline scored on an error by Lakeland shortstop Gustavo Nunez.

Lakeland answered with two in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie

it up at 3-3. But the Manatees would regain the lead in the bottom of

the fifth with a RBI double from Kjeldgaard that scored Angel Salome.

Kjeldgaard was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple,

to end the inning.

A two-out RBI single for Lakeland's Brent Wyatt in the top of the seventh would tie the game back up at 4-4.

Scott Krieger was a perfect 3-for-3 on the night with a RBI and a run

scored, with Cline also driving in two runs. Mark Willinsky pitched two

scoreless innings to earn his third save of the season.

At the end of play on Saturday, the Manatees sit two games behind the

Tampa Yankees for second place in the North Division and three games

behind the Daytona Cubs for first place.

Brevard County will open up a four-game series with the Dunedin Blue

Jays on Sunday night with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m.

Cody Scarpetta (7-9, 3.58) will start game one for the Manatees,

while Trey Watten (3-8, 3.80) will start game two of the twin-bill.

Brevard County box score

Erik Komatsu just keeps getting on, 1-3 with two walks tonight. Cline was on four times, walking twice and getting hit by a pitch in addition to his triple. Krieger was also hit by a pitch to go along with his three hits.

Final: @Wisconsin 6, Cedar Rapids 5 (11 innings)

Rattlers hunt down an extra-inning win

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Hunter Morris shook off a rough night at the plate and erased a season of extra-inning frustration for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the eleventh inning. Morris drove in a pair of runs with a two out double in the eleventh to give the Rattlers a 6-5 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night. The win gave the Rattlers their first extra-inning victory of the season in their eleventh try. It also was the fifth win in the last six games for the Rattlers and put the team in the thick of the Midwest League playoff race with twenty-two games remaining in the season.

Cedar Rapids (70-45 overall, 27-20 second half) grabbed the early lead on a first inning sacrifice fly by Eric Oliver. The Kernels added to their lead in the fourth inning on a two-out, two-run homer by Jon Karcich.

The Kernels were poised for more runs in the top of the fifth inning against Rattlers starting pitcher Hiram Burgos. They had runners at second and third with one out. Burgos struck out the next batter, but hit Oliver to load the bases. The Rattler starter got out of the inning with his fifth strikeout of the game.

Wisconsin (49-67, 23-25) had stranded six runners through the first four innings. Then, they cashed in their opportunities against Cedar Rapids in the bottom of the fifth. Cutter Dykstra doubled to start the inning. Then, a walk and infield single loaded the bases. Khris Davis smacked a two-run single to center to put Wisconsin on the scoreboard. An RBI grounder by Chris Dennis sent the tying run home.

In the sixth, the Rattlers took the lead. D'Vontrey Richardson walked to lead off the inning. Michael Marseco bunted Richardson into scoring position. Then, Dykstra doubled to left-center - his third double of the night - and Richardson scored for a 4-3 lead.

But, the Kernels rallied to tie the game in the eighth against reliever Santo Manzanillo. Oliver started the inning with a double. A grounder to the right side moved Oliver to third. Then, Manzanillo threw a wild pitch to allow Oliver to score the tying run.

Cedar Rapids took the lead in the eleventh on a fluky play. Jose Jimenez walked and was replaced by pinch runner Terrell Alliman to start the inning. A sacrifice moved Alliman to second. Jean Segura singled to right, but Alliman stopped at third. The throw went home and Segura took second base.

Wisconsin decided to intentionally walk Matt Long to load the bases. But, reliever Adrian Rosario, who had been keeping the Kernels off the board through his first 2-2/3 innings on the hill committed an unforced error. Ball one to Long was too high for catcher Cameron Garfield to pull down and the pitch went to the backstop to allow Alliman to score the go-ahead run. Rosario got the final two outs, but the Rattlers trailed 5-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

The Rattlers looked like they were headed for their eleventh extra inning loss of the season when Kernels reliever David Carpenter retired the first two batters of the bottom of the ninth. Kentrail Davis kept the game alive by slamming a single through the left side of the infield. Khris Davis fouled off a pair of 3-2 pitches from Carpenter before laying off a pitch in the dirt to draw a walk.

That brought Morris to the plate. The Rattlers first baseman was 1-for-5 on the night with four strikeouts heading into the at bat in the eleventh. He fell behind Carpenter 0-2 as he took strike one and fouled the next pitch to the backstop. Then, lightning struck.

Morris drove an 0-2 pitch that got too much of the plate to the gap in right-center. As the ball rolled to the 405' sign at the wall, both Davises circled the bases to give the Rattlers a thrilling come-from-behind 6-5 win.

Both the Western division leading Kane County Cougars and the Clinton LumberKings, the current holders of the wild card spot, lost on Saturday night. As the season heads into the action on Sunday afternoon, the Rattlers trail the Cougars by 4.5 games and the LumberKings (and now Beloit) by 2.5 games.

The series continues on Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Efrain Nieves (3-3, 4.23) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has Ariel Pena (6-4, 3.94) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 1:05pm.

Sunday is a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5 The Fan. Timber Rattlers players will be wearing jerseys and caps based on those of the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers. Fans may play catch on the field before the game. There is also a post-game autograph session with the players. Additionally, Time Warner Cable subscribers may bring in their bill and receive up to four half priced reserve seat tickets.

Sunday is also Bring Your Dog to the Ballpark Day presented by The Nutro Company. A special section of Time Warner Cable Field will be set aside for canine Rattlers fans and their owners. Human tickets are $5 and tickets for the pooches are $2. Please see this release for the full details of the day, including the necessary proof of updated vaccinations needed for the dog to attend. Proceeds from the tickets for the pups will go to the Fox Valley Humane Association.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm.

Wisconsin box score

Sweet release. Great game from Dykstra. Ke. Davis, Morris, and Garfield all each had two hits, and Kh. Davis singled and walked three times. Richardson tripled in addition to his walk. Scooter Gennett had a tough night, 0-5 with a walk. Burgos's final line: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 1 HR, 5/5 GO/AO.

Final: @Helena 5, Missoula 4

Brewers rally past Birds

Amber Kuehn/Helena Independent Record

It was exactly the kind of inning the Helena Brewers

needed.

Three walks, three hits, and a costly throwing error by Missoula

shortstop Raul Navarro helped Helena score five unanswered runs in

the seventh Saturday in a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the

Osprey.

It was the fourth time at Kindrick Legion Field this season that

the Brewers put together a late-inning rally to beat Missoula

(20-32 overall, 6-8 second half).

“Something about these guys, like they have been early in the

season, they’re a late-inning team,” said Helena manager Joe

Ayrault. “These guys never die; they’re always capable of putting

together a big inning.”

That big inning came after Missoula starter Patrick Schuster hurled

six shutout frames, sitting down 12 straight. The southpaw entered

the seventh with just a 79-pitch count and all was quiet in the

Osprey bullpen.

But on Schuster’s first throw to the leadoff man, Cody Hawn, he

appeared to tweak his ankle. That sent trainers and coaches to the

mound, but the lefty stayed put. He then walked two and gave up a

double to Greg Hopkins to give new life to the Brewers (26-25,

7-6), who came into the inning with just two hits.

Justin Albert relieved Schuster in the bases-loaded situation and a

Brent Dean fielder’s choice coupled with a Missoula error — one of

four on the evening for the visitors — brought in two runs. Carlos

George then tied the game with a blooper to shallow center, and

Robbie Garvey hit an RBI single straight up center to provide the

go-ahead run. Another error by the Osprey brought in the Brewers’

fifth run of the inning.

“We were trying to come back and I was trying to do the best I can

to help my teammates,” said George, who said the ball he hit was a

changeup, not his favorite pitch to take. “I could not let it pass

this time.”

George was 2 for 3 to lead Helena at the plate. Center fielder

Chris Jarrett had a big night offensively for Missoula, going 3 for

4 and finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.

The Osprey tried to get their own comeback brewing in the ninth off

closer Brian Garman. After Garman issued a two-out walk to Navarro,

Adam Eaton and Bobby Stone came through with back-to-back base

hits. Stone’s single scored Navarro to trim Helena’s lead, but

Richie Rowland flew out to center with the tying run 90-feet from

home to end the game.

Jose Oviedo earned his first win for the Brewers and Garman got his

sixth save. Albert was tagged with his first loss of the

year.

“I thought Stosh (Wawrzasek) did a nice job working out of a couple

jams and Oviedo putting up a bunch of zeros was big,” Ayrault said.

“(Missoula) just really battled and put together a couple nice

at-bats against Garman.”

Helena has today off before facing Casper for four games at home.

Ayrault said he knows little about the Ghosts, except for that they

have some solid arms.

“Great Falls manager Chris Cron and Billings’ Delino DeShields told

me Casper has good pitching, so we’ll have to be ready,” Ayrault

said.

Final, Game One: West Tenn (Mariners) 4, @Huntsville 1, seven innings as scheduled

Stars drop game one of Saturday’s double dip

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Anthony Vazquez (1-2) dominated on the mound as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (23-24, 62-54) knocked off the Huntsville Stars (24-23, 57-60) by a final score of 4-1 in game one of Saturday’s double header.

Vazquez went 6.2 innings, giving up only four hits and a lone run while striking out six. A big key for Vazquez was that he did not walk anyone.

Meanwhile after a routine first inning, Michael Bowman (8-10) surrendered an unearned run the very next frame.

With one away in the second, Nate Tenbrink doubled to center. Then Guillermo Quiroz gave the ball a ride to deep right that Chuckie Caufield dropped for an error (audio). Tenbrink scored on the play to give West Tenn the 1-0 lead.

Bowman settled down and tossed two straight scoreless innings. The long ball got to him in the fifth though. Joe Dunigan led-off with a single up the middle. The ever-dangerous Carlos Triunfel followed with a bomb to left and West Tenn extended their lead to 3-0 (audio).

A Brandon Haveman single followed by a deep fly-out from Matthew Lawson signaled the end of the day for Bowman. The right-hander went four and a third, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck-out six.

Lucas Luetge entered and got the Stars out of the inning. He would give up a solo shot to Carlos Peguero in the sixth though as West Tenn took a 4-0 advantage (audio).

The Stars finally got to Vazquez in the last half inning, the bottom of the seventh. Zelous Wheeler started things with a single to left. Two outs later Andy Machado doubled home Wheeler on a ball that Joe Dunigan misplayed to cut the deficit to 4-1 (audio). But that’d be it for the Stars as veteran reliever and 2009 Brewer farmhand Wes Littleton entered and got pinch hitter Taylor Green to pop out to third to end the game for his third save of the season.

Machado tallied the only multi-hit game for the Stars as he went 2-3 with a RBI. Michael Fiers made his first appearance since coming off the DL and tossed an inning of scoreless ball. Haveman and Tenbrink each smacked two base hits for the Diamond Jaxx.

Nice to see Michael Fiers in action, disappointing to see that whatever ailed him isn't allowing him to jump right bck into the starting rotation...

Stars salvage split of twin bill as Anderson rewrites the record books

By Aaron Morse, Huntsville Stars

Drew Anderson set the Stars’ all time record for career doubles and his hit turned out to be the difference as the Huntsville Stars (25-23, 58-60) snuck by the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (23-25, 62-55) by a final score of 4-3 in game two of Saturday’s double header.

West Tenn took the early lead for the second game in a row on a Carlos Peguero RBI double in the second inning (audio).

This time though the Stars struck back in a big way. In the bottom of the frame, Chris Nowak, Taylor Green, and Andy Machado smacked back-to-back-to-back singles with one away. Up stepped Lee Haydel, who hit a chopper to second base. The Diamond Jaxx got the force at second, but Carlos Triunfel’s throw to first was low and got away. Two runs crossed the plate to give Huntsville the 2-1 edge (audio). Dayton Buller followed with a clutch RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1 (audio).

The Diamond Jaxx chipped away against Stars’ starter Chris Cody. Matt Lawson led-off the third with a single to right. Nate Tenbrink followed with a single of his own and Lawson went corner to corner. One out later, Johan Limonta legged out a grounder as the Stars’ got the lead runner at second but no more. Lawson scored on the play to cut the lead to 3-2 (audio).

In the bottom of the frame, Zelous Wheeler doubled to center with one down. That’s when Anderson hit his record-setting 72nd career double as a Huntsville Star, driving in Wheeler to provide some much needed insurance (audio).

Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Leury Bonilla and Brandon Bantz in the fourth cut the Stars’ lead to a slim one run (audio).

The Diamond Jaxx chased Cody from the game in the fifth thanks to two singles. But Robert Hinton (4-2) bailed the Stars out when he forced Scott Savastano to hit into a 6-4-3 double play.

Cody’s final line was 4.1 IP, 9 hits, three runs, all earned, no walks and six strike-outs.

Hinton tossed a scoreless sixth and Jeremy Jeffress nailed down his first save of the year with a perfect seventh (final out).

With the victory, the Stars salvaged a split in the twin bill and remain 4.5 games back of the Diamond Jaxx in the Wild Card race heading into Sunday’s doubleheader. All the action can be heard on www.huntsvillestars.com beginning at 10:45 AM central time with the Window World Pre-Game Report.

Huntsville Game Two Box Score

Yes, it's an early Sunday start, as management decides against the split doubleheader due to more weather concerns; old friend Steve Bray started for the D-Jaxx; nice to Jeremy Jeffress get the job done in the final inning, but we need you in a starting role in 2011, young man...
