True Utility Man:

Chuckie Caufield made his fifth relief appearance last night in the bottom of the eighth. He’s pitched 3.2 innings this season for the Stars, even though he is normally an outfielder. Of the 37 pitches he’s thrown, 29 were for strikes. He’s struck out two of the 12 batters he’s faced and not allowed a single walk. He helped his own cause last night, hitting a home run in his lone plate appearance the next inning. Andy Machado, a utility infielder, has also appeared in five games as a relief pitcher, throwing 4.1 innings. He’s given up just two hits, walked two and struck out two.

Hunstville pretty much pwned by Archer. I think that guy is on his third level this season. Just dominating everywhere he goes.

Final: @Tennessee 7, Huntsville 1

Huntsville box score

Newly minted starter Andre Lamontagne posted another solid line (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 6 K, 6/2 GO/AO, 81 pitches, 56 strikes), but Huntsville's bats were wounded by Chris Archer's slings and arrows as the Stars fell five games behind the Smokies. Milwaukeean Chris Nowak smacked a solo homer for Huntsville's only run. Caleb Gindl led off and was 0-3 with a walk, Brett Lawrie was 1-4 with two strikeouts, and Taylor Green was 0-4. Robert Hinton struck out the side in a perfect 8th.

Huntsville play-by-play

Gindl bailed out Lamontagne in the 3rd:

Tennessee Bottom 3rd

  • Brett Jackson flies out to right fielder Drew T. Anderson.
  • Russ Canzler grounds out, third baseman Taylor Green to first baseman Chris Nowak.
  • Blake Lalli singles on a ground ball to right fielder Drew T. Anderson.
  • Robinson Chirinos hit by pitch. Blake Lalli to 2nd.
  • Matthew
Spencer singles on a line drive to center fielder Caleb Gindl. Blake
Lalli out at home on the throw, center fielder Caleb Gindl to catcher
    Anderson De La Rosa.

Between the 3rd and the 8th, Stars batters were retired 15 times in a row.

Rain in Helena suspends both games this evening.

Monsoon halts Tropical Night, make-up date TBD

The two-game series against the Billings Mustangs will have to be made up at a later date, if at all.

In an attempt to finish Monday night's game and play a seven-inning game afterwards, rain poured down upon Kindrick Legion Field on Tuesday night and play was suspended with no make-up date in sight.

The game was suspended with Billings leading 3-0 and coming to the plate in the top of the fifth inning.

Ticket stubs to Tuesday's game will be honored at any remaining home game. Chamber of Commerce tickets will be good for Friday August 13 when the Brewers take on Missoula.

If you were one of the first 100 adults whom received a Hawaiian lei, the Planet Beach raffle will be on Friday August 13.

Final (game one): DSL Brewers 6, @DSL Cardinals 5 (7 innings)

DSL Brewers box score

21-year-old righty Manny Ruiz struck out 10 and walked only one in six innings of work but allowed four unearned runs and five total. Still, the Cerveceritos pulled out the win; Jose Pena tripled and walked, Ronny Puello and Hitaniel Arias doubled and walked, and Andres Martinez was on three times with a single and two walks. Pena and Martinez each stole two bases.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

Huge error for the Cardinals here:

DSL Brewers Top 3rd

  • Dionis Hinojosa walks.
  • With Raul MondesiJr. batting, Dionis Hinojosa caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Fernando Baez to second baseman Jorge Lopez.
  • Raul MondesiJr. grounds out, shortstop Robelys Reyes to first baseman Luis Perez.
  • Ronny Puello doubles (10) on a fly ball to left fielder Eduardo Celestino.
  • Hitaniel Arias reaches on fielding error by shortstop Robelys Reyes. Ronny Puello to 3rd.
  • Jose Pena triples (5) on a fly ball to left fielder Eduardo Celestino. Ronny Puello scores. Hitaniel Arias scores.
  • With Carlos Pena batting, wild pitch by Jefferson Segundo, Jose Pena scores.
  • Carlos Pena strikes out swinging.

With the game knotted at 5 in the last inning, the Brewers took advantage of more sloppiness from the Cardinals to score the winning run:

DSL Brewers Top 7th

  • Dionis Hinojosa grounds out, pitcher Luis Polanco to first baseman Luis Perez.
  • Raul MondesiJr. doubles (5) on a fly ball to left fielder Eduardo Celestino.
  • Ronny
Puello strikes out swinging, catcher Fernando Baez to first baseman
Luis Perez. Raul MondesiJr. to 3rd on the throw.
  • With Hitaniel Arias batting, wild pitch by Luis Polanco, Raul MondesiJr. scores.
  • Hitaniel Arias walks.
  • With
Jose Pena batting, Hitaniel Arias picked off and caught stealing 2nd
base, pitcher Luis Polanco to first baseman Luis Perez.

Kind of strange that Mondesi's advancement was attributed to "on the throw", yeah?

Osmel Perez is back, baby! 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 K for the just-turned-17 RHP. Unfortunately, Eliezer Montano let in two unearned runs in the 5th to give away the game. The Brewers had only three hits, but Yonki Hernandez (single, two walks) and Hitaniel Arias (two walks, HBP) both were on three times. Jose Pena was 0-2 with a walk.

  • With Jose R. Garcia batting, wild pitch by Jefferson Segundo, Jose Pena to 2nd.
  • Jose R. Garcia singles on a fly ball to left fielder Domingo Diaz. Jose Pena out at home on the throw, left fielder Domingo Diaz to catcher Luis Perez. Jose R. Garcia to 2nd on the throw.

  • Daniel Barbuena reaches on fielding error by shortstop Andres Martinez.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Fernando Baez replaces Daniel Barbuena.
  • Robelys Reyes reaches on fielding error by left fielder Ronny Puello. Fernando Baez scores. Robelys Reyes to 2nd.
  • With Luis Perez batting, wild pitch by Eliezer Montano, Robelys Reyes to 3rd.

Final: Wisconsin 6, @Clinton 5

Davis & Davis deliver a Rattler win

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA – Khris Davis inched closer to a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers franchise record for home runs. Kentrail Davis had three more hits and drove in the winning run with a ninth inning double. The Davises helped the Rattlers to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Clinton LumberKings Tuesday night at Alliant Energy Field. The win gave the Rattlers a split in the four game series after they dropped the first two games at Clinton.

Khris Davis put the Timber Rattlers (46-66 overall, 20-24 second half) in front in the second inning. He launched a solo homer to left to start the inning. It was the eighteenth home run of the season for Davis. The Timber Rattlers franchise record for homers in a single season is 21 and his held by Juan Silvestre (1999) and Matt Hagen (2003).

Wisconsin continued to hit in the second and took advantage of a pair of Clinton errors in the inning to take a 3-0 lead. Chris Dennis singled. Then, D’Vontrey Richardson singled to right. The throw to third to try to get Dennis was wild and Dennis scored as Richardson took third. Austin Stockfisch was next and he sent a grounder to third. Throw came to the plate and Richardson knocked the ball out of the mitt of the catcher to score the third run.

But, Clinton (60-52, 23-20) answered with a run in the second and three run third to take a 4-3 lead. Matt Cerione knocked in the first run with a two-out single in the second. In the third, the first two batters reached on a single and a walk against starting pitcher Eric Arnett. Nick Franklin followed with an RBI single. The next two batters knocked in runs with RBI grounders.

The LumberKings added a run in the fourth inning. Mario Martinez doubled to start the inning when his fly ball to center was lost in the lights. Two outs later, he scored on single by James Jones against Adrian Rosario.

The Rattlers rallied with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning with a little help from the LumberKings defense.

In the fifth, Wisconsin had runners at first and second with one out. Hunter Morris sent a grounder to first. Clinton got the force at second, but the return throw to first was wild and the runner from second scored.

In the sixth, Dennis started the inning with a double. He took third when reliever Stephen Pryor threw back to second on a pickoff play, but nobody was covering the base. Dennis scored the tying run on a two-out wild pitch.

Rosario struck out eight over 3-1/3 innings, but he left the game with two on and one out in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Costello got the first out, but walked Catricala intentionally to set up a lefty-lefty confrontation with Mickey Wiswall. Costello fell behind Wiswall 2-0 with the bases loaded, but came back to strike out Wiswall to end the inning.

Michael Marseco started the Wisconsin ninth inning with a single, but the next two batters grounded into force outs at second. That brought Kentrail Davis to the plate. He lined a 3-2 pitch into the left field corner and Scooter Gennett streaked around the bases to score the go ahead run.

Jon Pokorny came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth and walked Gabriel Noriega to start the frame. The Rattlers closer finished off the LumberKings with a strikeout, a force out at second, and a strikeout. That gave Pokorny his twelfth save of the season.

Wisconsin heads down the road to Davenport, Iowa to take on the Quad Cities River Bandits in a three game series that starts on Wednesday. Nick Bucci (5-5, 3.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The Bandits will send Shelby Miller (5-5, 3.86) to the hill. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the radio broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Wisconsin box score

Arnett's final line: 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 4/3 GO/AO, 53 pitches, 33 strikes. Not so good--but hey, the Davises are! Kentrail is now hitting .345/.430/.531 in 172 PA for the Timber Rattlers. He has 17 doubles, 19 walks, and only 15 strikeouts. Gennett and Cutter Dykstra each singled and walked, and Dykstra stole his 17th base. Dennis added a walk to his two hits. Morris was 0-5 for the second straight night.

Wisconsin play-by-play

Richardson was only 1-4 and struck out twice, but his excellent defense was front & center. First, his arm helped Arnett limit the damage here:

Clinton Bottom 2nd

  • Vincent Catricala walks.
  • Mickey Wiswall lines out to third baseman Cutter Dykstra.
  • Blake Ochoa walks. Vincent Catricala to 2nd.
  • Mario Martinez flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Matthew
Cerione singles on a ground ball to center fielder D' Vontrey
Richardson. Vincent Catricala scores. Blake Ochoa out at 3rd on the
throw, center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson to third baseman Cutter
    Dykstra.

Then, check out Chris Mehring's description of his catch here:

Clinton Bottom 8th

  • Blake Ochoa strikes out swinging, catcher Austin Stockfisch to first baseman Hunter Morris.
  • Mario Martinez lines out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
  • Matthew Cerione grounds out, second baseman Ryan Gennett to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Final: @Las Vegas (Blue Jays) 19, Nashville 8

High-Scoring Series Continues, Sounds Fall

Nashville Sounds

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds entered the record books in the wrong way on Tuesday evening, matching the highest single-game run total allowed in franchise history in a 19-8 loss to the Las Vegas 51s at Cashman Field.

The 19 Las Vegas runs marked the third overall time an opponent has produced that output against Nashville in the Sounds' 33-year history and the first time since the Iowa Cubs plated 19 on August 21, 1989. The 51s' 20 hits on the night were one shy of the most ever produced by a Sounds opponent in a single game.

Las Vegas broke open a 5-5 game with a nine-run sixth inning en route to its victory.

The clubs combined for 27 runs and 33 hits in the contest, including 19 extra-base knocks. Nashville's seven doubles, including three by Mat Gamel, matched a season high and were one shy of the single-game franchise record.

The teams combined for 11 individual multiple-hit efforts in the tilt. Las Vegas shortstop Mike McCoy went 5-for-5, including a home run and a double, to lead all batters.

Each of the three games in the series has seen the victory post a double-digit run total; Nashville plated 10 and 12 runs on Sunday and Monday evenings, respectively.

The Sounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Las Vegas starter Shawn Hill, who lasted only an inning in the contest. Gamel and Erick Almonte recorded back-to-back one-out RBI doubles before shortstop Luis Cruz plated the frame's third run with a two-out single.

McCoy led off the home half of the first by belting his fifth home run of the year to center against Sounds starter Chase Wright.

Las Vegas sent nine batters to the plate during a four-run third inning against Wright to grab a 5-3 lead. Jarrett Hoffpauir highlighted the inning with a two-run homer, his 14th longball of the year.

Nashville first baseman Joe Koshansky knotted the score at 5-5 in the fifth when he swatted his team-leading 20th home run of the season, an opposite-field, two-out shot to left off Josh Roenicke (audio of that call is available via the above link).

After Ray Olmedo opened the top of the sixth inning with a triple but never made it plateward as the Sounds ultimately left the bags full against Roenicke, the 51s blew the game open in the bottom of the frame with a nine-run outburst after the first two batters were retired.

Fourteen batters came to the plate for Las Vegas in the big inning, which matched the highest output allowed in a single frame by the Sounds all season, as six different players recorded RBI knocks for the 51s.

Wright gave up a go-ahead single to McCoy and left runners on first and second before the 51s thumped Sounds reliever Donovan Hand for eight more runs in the inning; the right-hander was charged with six of those scores in just one-third of an inning of work.

The Sounds made it a 14-7 game with a pair of scores off Jesse Carlson in the seventh. Koshansky and Cruz legged out consecutive one-out doubles before Olmedo contributed a two-out RBI single.

51s third baseman Brad Emaus got those two runs right back with one swing of the bat in the home half, crushing a two-run homer to left off David Johnson.

Nashville got a run back in the eighth when Ben Johnson scored on a double play groundout to make it a 16-8 contest before Las Vegas concluded the night's scoring in the bottom of the frame when Mike Jacobs smashed a three-run homer off Johnson to bring the score to its final 19-8 standing.

Roenicke (7-0) was the beneficiary of the mid-game offensive outburst by Vegas and picked up the win. He allowed two runs in his two frames of relief work.

Wright (7-8) took the loss after surrendering eight runs on nine hits in his 5 2/3 innings of action.

The teams will wrap up the series with a 9:05 PM CT finale on Wednesday night. Right-hander Marty McLeary (5-7, 7.25) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Las Vegas right-hander Robert Ray (5-5, 5.30).

Nashville Box Score

Hopefully the 2011 AAA Brewers don't end up in one of these West Coast PCL outposts (available list), it would just be no fun trying to skew down the ridiculous numbers each evening; Mat Gamel was in right field this time out -- that's four spots in the last four games (3B, DH, 1B, RF); RHP Donovan Hand had been very good in his first taste of AAA -- don't worry, Donovan, what happens in Vegas, well, you know the rest...

Archer on target as Smokies extend lead to five

Tennessee continues beating up Stars, 7-1

BY ADAM GREENE. sports@knoxnews.com

SEVIERVILLE - Chris Archer was the last person the Huntsville Stars wanted to see at Smokies Park on Tuesday night.

The much-maligned Huntsville pitching staff should have been taking notes as Archer gave up just one hit to help keep the Smokies' home winning streak alive with a 7-1 victory.

Tennessee (29-16) now has a five-game lead over the Stars (24-21) in the second-half Southern League North standings. The Smokies' 71 wins during the two halves of this season with 24 games to go are more than their entire win total of 2009 (70-43). The franchise record for wins is 88, set in 1978 by the Knoxville Sox.

"He (Archer) had good velocity and stayed on top of the ball to get it down," Smokies manager Bill Dancy said. "He had a good change-up and if he keeps going higher up, the change-up's going to be a big plus for him because he's a power pitcher."

Archer's only mistake was in the top of the second inning when he gave up a solo home run to Huntsville's Chris Nowak. Archer (7-1) bounced right back, holding Huntsville hitless and scoreless the rest of the way, through seven innings worked.

"You prepare yourself throughout the season to battle," Archer said. "You have to know it's going to happen, it's a solo home run, but you have to brush it off and continue to pitch."

Archer walked two and fanned eight. Archer's ERA this season now sits at a ridiculous 0.58.

Huntsville can only dream of seeing that kind of performance from a pitcher as this series with the Smokies has been nothing short of a nightmare. In four games, Tennessee has scored 45 runs against the Stars' pitching staff. Huntsville starter Andre Lamontagne (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season thanks to giving up two quick runs in the first inning on RBI doubles from Russ Canzler and Robinson Chirinos.

"We got the runs in the first and that got our momentum going right out of the shoot," Dancy said.

Lamontagne left the game in the fifth trailing 3-1 and his replacements fared no better. Reliever Nick Green gave up four more runs, two in the sixth and two in the seventh to let Tennessee coast to the win.

Notebook: The Smokies have plenty of streaks going. In addition to an eight-game home winning streak, Tennessee has won its last seven games. . . . First baseman Blake Lalli has recorded a hit for 14 consecutive games after going 2-for-4 with and RBI on Tuesday. . . . Center fielder Brandon Guyer has a 13-game streak going. Guyer was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Storms halt Brewers, Mustangs for second straight night

By AMBER KUEHN, Helena Independent Record

Tropical Night at Kindrick Legion Field?

More like a tropical storm.

Strong winds and rain ripped through Helena just 14 minutes after Tuesday’s first pitch, causing the grounds crew to roll out the tarp for the second straight night. It seemed Mother Nature was determined to prevent the Helena Brewers and Billings Mustangs from finishing their two-game set, as the game was eventually postponed.

No makeup date has been determined, as the two teams must wait for the Pioneer League president to decide if and when the games will be made up. Tuesday was slated to be the final matchup between the Brewers and Mustangs. The only conceivable makeup date would be Aug. 31, which was scheduled to be a day off for both clubs.

What began as a beautiful, dry, sunny day turned into an eery evening, as lightning flashed in grey skies in every direction when the game got underway, picking up where Monday’s game left off in the top of the fourth inning.

Watch a brief video of the lighning strikes here -- be sure to go to "full-screen" mode, always love seeing the Kindrick Field backdrop.

Fourteen minutes was just enough time for the Mustangs to add to their 2-0 lead. Billy Hamilton hit an RBI single to center off Helena pitcher Jimmy Nelson to score Devin Lohman, who reached on a double the previous night.

The Brewers were again held without a hit, as Mike Walker’s league-leading 40th walk gave the hosts their only baserunner in the bottom of the fourth.

With a 2-2 count to leadoff batter Stephen Hunt in the fifth, the umpires called the players off the field as lightning continued to inch closer. Only moments later, just seconds after the grounds crew began laying the tarp down, a heavy rain began to fall. Crew members struggled to keep the tarp down as strong winds began to blow.

“I was just worried about their safety,” Helena manager Joe Ayrault said of the grounds crew. “Hats off to Darren (Jibben) and the grounds crew for getting that down.”

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts up to 52 miles per hour, and the Helena Airport got .57 of an inch of rainfall within the hour.

Suspensions are nothing new to Ayrault.

“I’m used to the Florida State League where you get rain everyday,” he said. “For this to be our first back-to-back rainouts, that’s not bad.

“You get them all the time. It’s one of those things, it’s just part of summer baseball.”

The game was just six outs away from being able to become official in Billings’ favor when the contest was called. The teams were originally scheduled to play another seven-inning game following the finish of Monday’s suspended contest. Both teams keep identical second-half records, at 4-5.

Helena next begins a home-and-home series with Missoula, returning to Kindrick on Friday for a two-game set. The Brewers visit the Osprey today, with Matt Miller getting the nod.

The Mustangs head to Great Falls.

Tuesday night’s promotion was, fittingly, Tropical Night. Fans who dressed in Hawaiian attire received $2.00 off admission. Ticket stubs to the game will be honored at any remaining home game. Chamber of Commerce tickets will be good for Friday, August 13, when the Brewers take on Missoula.

Manatee Press Release:

VIERA, Fla. --- The Florida State League announced this morning that the Brevard County Manatees and the Dunedin Blue Jays will play a doubleheader on Sunday, August 15 at 5:05 PM (6:05 Central) at Space Coast Stadium in Viera.

The doubleheader was scheduled due to a rain out between the two clubs on August 10 in Dunedin. Since the two clubs will not play again in Dunedin this season, the decision was made to make-up the game at Brevard County.

The Manatees will be the home team for both games of the twin-bill and as with all Florida State League doubleheaders, both games will be seven innings long.

You have to wonder if it's just time to send Arnett home and to tell him not to pick up a baseball for 2 or 3 months. What they are doing now obvioulsy isn't working. Maybe some time away from the game would clear his head because I think it's obvious that this had gotten into his head.
