Nashville Media Notes

TOOL TIME: Baseball America released the results of its annual “Best Tools” survey of PCL skippers today. Sounds infielder Luis Cruz was named as the league’s best defensive shortstop. Nashville’s Alcides Escobar picked up the same honor a year ago. Cruz was the only Sounds player mentioned in the survey, which tabbed former Salt Lake OF Peter Bourjos as the PCL’s most exciting player.

Final: @Tennessee 16, Huntsville 6

Huntsville box score

First, the good news: Brett Lawrie was 3-4 and crushed a home run to center field, his 8th on the year. Now, the bad: Amaury Rivas allowed six runs on nine hits, including two homers, in 4.1 innings. He struck out three and walked two, throwing 50 of his 86 pitches for strikes. Jim Henderson later allowed nine runs to make it silly, and Chuckie Caufield ended up getting the last out for the Stars. Caufield's now pitched in five games this year, totaling 3.2 innings, over which he's allowed no runs or walks, just one hit, and struck out two. Oh, and he also homered in the 9th just for kicks. Caleb Gindl was 0-4 with a walk, and Taylor Green was 0-3 with a sac fly.

Huntsville play-by-play

In a 2-2 game, Tennessee blew things open in the 5th:

Tennessee Bottom 5th

  • Craig Muschko doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Tony Campana singles on a line drive to center fielder Caleb Gindl. Craig Muschko to 3rd.
  • Brett Jackson out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Drew T. Anderson. Craig Muschko scores.
  • With Russ Canzler batting, Tony Campana steals (40) 2nd base.
  • Russ Canzler homers (17) on a fly ball to left field. Tony Campana scores.

  • Steve Clevenger walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Chris Cody replaces Amaury Rivas, batting 9th.
  • Brandon Guyer singles on a ground ball to center fielder Caleb Gindl. Matthew Spencer scores. Steve Clevenger to 2nd.
  • Tony Thomas flies out softly to center fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Marwin Gonzalez grounds out to first baseman Chris Nowak.

Final: Wisconsin 9, @Clinton 6

Rattlers stop Clinton win streak

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers ended a week’s worth of wins for the Clinton LumberKings on Monday night. Wisconsin beat Clinton 9-6 at Alliant Energy Field to end the seven game winning streak of the LumberKings. Kentrail Davis had three hits and two RBI to pace Wisconsin’s 12-hit attack. Khris Davis and Chris Dennis added home runs for Wisconsin.

Khris Davis made his presence known almost immediately in the game. Davis, who had been away from the team for three games for the funeral of his grandfather, hit a long home run in the top of the second. Davis’s seventeenth dinger of the season gave the Rattlers (45-66 overall, 19-24 second half) a 1-0 lead.

Clinton (60-51, 23-19) answered in the bottom of the second. Mickey Wiswall and Blake Ochoa hit back-to-back home runs with two outs and the LumberKings were up 2-1. The LumberKings added a run in the third inning on an RBI single by James Jones.

Then, Kentrail Davis singled to start the Rattlers fourth. One out later Khris Davis drew a one out walk on four pitches from Clinton starter Nick Czyz. Dennis stepped up and took the first two pitches out of the strike zone. Czyz grooved the 2-0 pitch an Dennis crushed it over the fence in right. The three-run homer put the Rattlers up 4-3.

Wisconsin wasn’t done. In the fifth, Kentrail Davis stepped to the plate with two runners on and lined a double off the wall in right to drive in two runs. Then, Davis stole third and scored on a wild throw. That put the Rattlers up 7-3.

Then, the teams traded runs. Wisconsin scored a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Scooter Gennett. Clinton would get a run on a sacrifice fly by Ochoa in the bottom of the seventh. Dennis scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth. Nick Franklin’s RBI grounder in the bottom of the eighth made the score 9-5 with Wisconsin in the lead.

Hiram Burgos was the starting pitcher for the Rattlers. He went seven innings and allowed four runs while striking out four.

Closer Jon Pokorny entered the game in a non-save situation for the bottom of the ninth inning. He gave up a leadoff homer to Vinnie Catricala. Then, he retired the next three batters without incident.

The Timber Rattlers and LumberKings conclude their series on Tuesday night. Eric Arnett (0-9, 6.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Erasmo Ramirez (9-4, 2.54) is set to start for Clinton. Game time is 7:00pm. You can tune in for the broadcast of the game on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Wisconsin box score

Lots of nice lines from the Rattlers' hitters. Kentrail Davis had two doubles as part of his three hits, and Khris Davis added a single to his homer and walk. Dennis and Gennett also had two hits, and Cutter Dykstra was on twice on a single and a walk. Kentrail's hammy must have been having a good day, because he stole a base, as did Khris Davis and Dykstra. Hunter Morris took an 0-5 collar in the midst of all the carnage. Burgos allowed eight hits, including two homers, but walked none, though he did hit a batter. He also induced 11 ground outs against five fly outs.

Wisconsin play-by-play

Burgos allowed back-to-back jacks in the 2nd.

Something to watch -- Brevard SS Josh Prince was pulled after grounding out in the 8th inning.

D-Jays snap five game skid with 7-2 win

By Tim Livingston / Dunedin Blue Jays

This time, the rain didn't stop things completely, and that was good enough for the D-Jays.

After a 32-minute rain delay, the Dunedin Blue Jays woke up the sleeping bats and Chuck Huggins had another quality start as they broke their five game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the surging Brevard County Manatees.

With the game scoreless after the top of the second inning, rain started to fall at Dunedin Stadium, and although it was a strong storm, it didn't last long enough to put the field out of commission, where heavy rains over the last couple of days had led to the postponement of one game against the Palm Beach Cardinals and a delay of the series opening doubleheader between the D-Jays and Manatees.

But after the teams returned to the field, Dunedin (60-55, 19-26 2nd half) was ready to go offensively, and basically put the game away right out of the rain delay with the bottom half of the second inning.

With one out, Yan Gomes doubled to right field, and after Jon Talley was hit by a pitch, Mark Sobolewski singled to right to load the bases for Ryan Goins, who has started to come around after his early struggles following a promotion from Lansing.

Goins ripped a double to deep center field over the head of Juan Sanchez, clearing the bases and giving the D-Jays a 3-0 lead, more than enough for Huggins (8-3), who pitched very well a start after giving up six runs in only two innings against Palm Beach on August 4.

Huggins left two runners on with one out in the seventh inning, giving way to Evan Crawford and a 5-0 Dunedin lead. Crawford gave up an infield single to Brock Kjeldgaard to load the bases, and then a single to Sean Halton that scored two, as a throwing error from Goins at shortstop allowed the second runner to come around, making it a 5-2 game. Crawford then got Shawn Zarraga to ground out and end the threat.

Dunedin would add two runs in the later innings, as Mike McDade scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to push the lead to 6-2, and he was involved in a very odd play for Dunedin's final run in the eighth.

With one out, both Justin McClanahan and Brian Van Kirk walked to bring McDade to the plate, and McDade singled to left-center field. McClanahan raced around to score easily, and as the throw came in to try and nail him down, McDade headed towards second base thinking that Van Kirk would advance to third.

But Van Kirk stopped halfway between second and third, forcing McDade to get in a race with the catcher Zarraga to first base. When Zarraga saw that McDade would make it easily, he looked to Van Kirk, who was still between the bags, and threw it to second base, instigating a rundown that was ended by, of all players, the left fielder Kjeldgaard, a play that went down in the book as a 9-2-4-5-7 putout.

Michael McDade singles on a line drive to center fielder Juan Sanchez. Justin McClanahan scores. Brian Van Kirk out at 3rd on the throw, center fielder Juan Sanchez to catcher Shawn Zarraga to second baseman Steve Braun to third baseman Sergio Miranda to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.

That wackiness aside, the ninth inning was calm for Crawford, who sent down the Manatees in order to halt a five game skid and ease the jets of Brevard County (54-60, 28-17), who now sit in third place in the Florida State League North Division for the second half of the season.

Dunedin became the sixth team in the FSL to reach 60 wins on the season. Tampa leads the league with 63 wins overall.

Cody Scarpatta (7-9), who lit up the D-Jays in his last start at Dunedin Stadium, lasted only three innings and gave up three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three. It was his first loss against Dunedin this season.

The D-Jays finish off a seven day, eight game homestand with the finale of a three day, four game series with the Manatees on Tuesday night at 7:00 Pm (6:00 Central). No pitcher has been named for Dunedin, as scheduled starter Chad Beck had to fill in as an emergency starter for Ryan Page on Sunday during the doubleheader.

Ejections: Tennessee Smokies Batting Coach Tom Beyers ejected by 1B umpire Chris Graham (8th).

So let's see -- as the batting coach, your team scores 16 runs on 21 hits (including nine doubles and two home runs) plus five walks, and you get yourself kicked out in the 8th inning. Brainiac.

9-2, 13-3, 16-6 -- nice series thus far, sigh.

Dear Brewer broadcast production crew:

Please don't post a fan email question asking about the status of Jody Gerut during a game if you're not going to feed Brian and Bill the proper answer beforehand -- Gerut now has two full weeks of Maryvale action and over 30 AB's under his belt. He's not still "sitting at home", guys.

Not that it matters.

Thank you.

Arizona Box Score

We demand that someone from RHP Michael (Mike?) Schaub's L.A-area high school fill us in on the 18-year-old -- three scoreless, one-hit innings in his start here, no walks, two K's, seven groundouts, no flyouts; a two-run triple off of LHP Charly Bashara in the 4th produced the game's only runs; Bashara (seven K's in four innings) and fellow southpaw Dexter Bobo (two K's in one frame) followed Schaub...

The aforementioned Mr. Gerut doubled, singled, and walked; 1B Demetrius McKelvie 0-for-4 with three more K's, that's 45 K's in 88 AB's and I think I'm going to give the young man a break and forego future 2010 mentions except for the positive; the wonderful 2B Nick Shaw on base three more times; the A-Crew had five hits, five walks, one safe on error, one GIDP, and that adds up to 10 LOB, 0-for-12 with RISP, and a shutout for the Dodgers...

Final: Nashville 12, @Las Vegas (Blue Jays) 2

Sounds Blow Out Vegas

Nashville Sounds

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Norris Hopper produced his second consecutive four-hit effort and Luis Cruz homered with four RBIs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 12-2 rout of the Las Vegas 51s on Monday evening at Cashman Field.

Hopper continued to swing a hot stick for Nashville, finishing 4-for-5. The veteran has produced multi-hit efforts in eight of his last 15 starts, batting .379 over that stretch (25-for-66).

Cruz (3-for-5) homered for the second straight contest versus Las Vegas after not going deep since June 22. It marked the third time this season that Cruz has belted longballs in back-to-back games.

The Sounds (61-55) earned consecutive wins against the 51s by producing a double-digit scoring output for the second straight evening.

Las Vegas took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third inning against Sounds spot starter Tim Dillard as a pair of walks came back to haunt the right-hander.

After Brian Jeroloman and Jarrett Hoffpauir each drew a free pass to put runners on first and second with two outs, 51s first baseman Mike Jacobs ripped an RBI single to right to plate the first run of the contest.

The Sounds stormed out to an 8-1 lead in the fifth as the visitors matched their largest single-inning scoring output of the season, sending 12 men to the plate during an eight-run rally against 51s starter Lance Broadway.

Eric Farris and Mat Gamel (3-for-5) each contributed a two-run single in the frame (Farris' base hit is available via audio at the link above), while Ray Olmedo later added a two-RBI double then scored the eighth and final run on Hopper's second single of the inning.

Olmedo finished 3-for-5 for the Sounds to continue his hot hitting for Nashville. The veteran is batting .426 (20-for-47) over his last 15 tilts, recording a knock in 13 of them.

Jeroloman belted his second home run of the year in the bottom of the frame, a one-out solo shot to left off Dillard, to make it an 8-2 game.

Nashville tacked on a pair of runs against ex-Sound Zach Jackson with a two-out rally in the sixth. Gamel ripped a two-out double and the visitors filled the bases against the left-hander as Brendan Katin and Joe Koshansky drew back-to-back walks. Cruz then followed with his second run-scoring knock of the evening, a two-run single to right that increased the visitors' lead to 10-2.

The Sounds upped their advantage to 11-2 an inning later as Olmedo led off with a single, his third hit of the night, and later scored on catcher Martin Maldonado's sacrifice fly.

Cruz wrapped up the night's scoring in the ninth with a leadoff solo homer off 51s right fielder Jason Lane, who worked the final inning from the hill for Las Vegas. The roundtripper was the infielder's eighth of the season.

Dillard (3-5) earned his second win in three starts for the Sounds this season after allowing two runs on five hits over five innings of work.

The Nashville bullpen worked four scoreless frames behind the right-hander to close out the victory, including two innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts by Carlos Villanueva.

Broadway (2-11) was saddled with the loss after surrendering eight runs on 10 hits over his five innings of work for the 51s.

The teams continue the series with another 9:05 PM CT meeting on Tuesday. Left-hander Chase Wright (7-7, 4.50) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Las Vegas right-hander Marc Rzepczynski (5-5, 6.04).

Nashville Box Score

Mat Gamel played first base -- he committed a fielding error in the 4th; Gamel went 3-for-5 with a double, so the switch didn't hurt his day at the plate; the 6-7-8 combo of Luis Cruz, Ray Olmedo, and Norris Hopper went 10-for-15 with six runs scored and seven RBI; RHP Tim Dillard is under control for another year, so he'll be in Oklahoma City or wherever the Crew's AAA home lands in 2011; RHP Brandon Kintzler allowed a double and single but kept his inning scoreless...
