I'm excited for a starter at each of the 4 top levels today....throw in Yo going for a sweep!

We could be watching the entire rotation of the future today.

Yeah that would be nice, well except Butler, i don't think he is to special at all. It is hard not to be excited about Mark, Jake, and Kyle right now

Paying Butler league minimum is better than paying Suppan or some other #4 or #5 pitcher free agent dollars. Butler may not be anything special but he is a cost controlled #4 or #5 type of a pitcher I actually think Butler has the potential to be a #3 like starter but he is probably more along the lines as a #4 or a #5 type of a pitcher which is very valuable to a team like the Brewers.

Exactly. I've really had enough of the Suppans, Loopers, and Davis's,

Yeah he is a cheap option who has the ability to pitch in the 4 or 5 spot and give us another guy to sit in the 5.00 era's and maybe support a 11-11 type w/l depending if he gets Looper type run support. He is no worse than what he have but no better. I don't know never bought into the Butler is a legit pitching prospect talk. Hope I am wrong! Ha

So if Rogers comes out and dominates as he has over the past few outtings with few walks, does he earn the bump to AAA? Which that move would open the door for Scarpetta maybe Merklinger to finally move up.

Here's a note to all those Brewer farmhands toiling today, maybe particularly those at the lowest levels.

I haven't read any game reports from today's Brewer game (I did watch, with an occasional fast-forward on the DVR after a nice summer family day), so I apologize if this is in print online elsewhere already or was mentioned by the TV or radio guys.

Did you catch how homegrown the Brewer lineup was today?

Keep plugging away on the farm, young men. You will get rewarded down the road.

Final: @Clinton (Mariners) 4, Wisconsin 3

Rattlers fall just short in Clinton

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The long wait was almost worth it. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers dropped a 4-3 decision to the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field. The game was delayed for over two and a half hours due to a heavy rain shower and wet field conditions. Clinton erased an early Wisconsin lead to take a 4-1 lead. The Rattlers rallied and had chance, but could not cash in the opportunities to keep Clinton from winning their seventh straight game.

D'Vontrey Richardson did not let the long wait slow him down. The Rattlers leadoff batter smacked a double down the left field line to start the game. One out later, Hunter Morris doubled off the top of the wall in center and Richardson scored for a 1-0 lead.

Clinton (60-50 overall, 23-18 second half) got on the board in the bottom of the third. A leadoff walk, a single, and a bunt single loaded the bases against Rattlers starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi. Luis Nunez followed with a single to tie the game. Then, James Jones singled to knock in two runs and Clinton had a 3-1 lead.

The LumberKings extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vinnie Catricala singled with two outs. Mickey Wiswall followed with a double to right that scored Catricala for a 4-1 advantage.

Clinton centerfielder Matt Cerione single-handedly prevented a Rattlers rally in the top of the seventh inning. Michael Marseco sent a slicing line drive to left-center to start the inning. But, Cerione closed on the ball and made a diving catch. There was a lot of baseball showing out of the top o the web of his glove, but Cerione held on for the catch. He topped himself for the final out of the frame. Scooter Gennett hit a line drive over the head of Cerione. The Clinton centerfielder charged back and made a leaping catch. Then, he fell backwards onto the muddy warning track and tumbled over once and held onto the ball for the final out of the inning.

Wisconsin (44-66, 18-24) managed a run in the top of the eighth inning. Kentrail Davis doubled and Cutter Dykstra singled to put runners at the corners. A Chris Dennis RBI grounder got Davis home and made the score 4-2.

The Timber Rattlers made it interesting in the top of the ninth inning against Clinton closer Brandon Josselyn. Marseco singled to start the inning. One out later, Gennett doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position. Morris knocked in his second run of the game with an infield ground out. Josselyn got Davis to ground back to the mound to end the game.

Game three of the series is Monday night. Hiram Burgos (3-5, 3.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton will counter with Nick Czyz (3-2, 5.09). Game time is 7:00pm. You may tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Wisconsin box score

Odorizzi of course has had much better games, but its not like he was terrible today. He probably read the link report during the rain delay and felt the pressure...Hunter Morris goes 2-for-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Cutter Dykstra and Joey Paciorek each go 2-for-4, with D'Vontrey Richardson, Scooter Gennett and Kentrail Davis all hitting doubles. With 12 hits in total, the T-Rats should have scored more than 3 runs, although only Dennis drew a walk in this one.

Wisconsin game log

The T-Rats did a nice job making this game close, late, scoring single runs in both the 8th and 9th innings. Unfortunately they couldn't scratch across one more.

Final: @Tennessee (Cubs) 13, Huntsville 3

Huntsville box score

Mark Rogers continues to tease us. Coming off two of his best starts of his career, he reverts to his career self. He only gave up 2 hits in 2 innings of work, but both hits were home runs and he walked 4, leading to 6 runs. Uncharacteristically, he only struck out one batter. Jeremy Jeffress continued his success this year, tossing two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out 1. Caleb Gindl and Brett Lawrie, hitting 1-2 at the top of the lineup, both went 2-for-4 with a run scored, although Lawrie was caught stealing and was picked off first.

Huntsville box score

Things looked promising after the top of the first, but got mighty ugly after that. Rogers walked the bases loaded, and a run in, in the first, allowed another run on a passed ball and then gave up a 3-run blast.

That's a good call Mass. It was particularly encouraging to see Cain, Escobar and Lucroy have success. On Friday at MP, I was really impressed with Cain's arm strength in CF, and his overall energy and intensity he brings to the game.

Huh, who would have thunk that it would be Trey Watten having the best start of the day for the organization. As a spot starter, he gives BC 5 shutout innings of 1 hit ball, with 7 Ks.

Final: @Great Falls (White Sox) 9, Helena 4

Helena box score

I'll be happy to turn the reins back over to battlekow in the next day or two, as I haven't had much luck reporting happy news down on the farm the past few days. As noted above, Brandon Sizemore at least made things interesting providing the big hit, a 2-run home run, as part of a 4-run 7th. That made the game 5-4, but Great Falls scored a run in the bottom of the frame, and added 3 more the next. Overall the H-Crew mustered only 3 hits and didn't draw a single free pass.

Helena game log

Helena went quietly and quickly, 1-2-3, in 6 of the 9 innings. Rob Currie cruised through the 5th and 6th innings...

OK, let's see if my browser doesn't crash again putting together this post -- frustrating...

Final, Game One: Brevard County 4, @Dunedin (Blue Jays) 3, nine innings, scheduled for seven

Brevard County Game One Box Score

It's actually going to be easier if we first show you how the 9th inning, which was actually the second of the "extra" innings, went down. The game was tied 1-1 entering the 9th.

Brevard County Top 9th

  • Pitcher Change: Dumas Garcia replaces Frank Gailey.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a ground ball to third baseman Mark Sobolewski.
  • Angel Salome singles on a line drive to left fielder Brad McElroy. Erik Komatsu to 2nd.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Josh Prince replaces Angel Salome.
  • Sergio Miranda doubles (16) on a fly ball to center fielder Anthony Gose. Erik Komatsu scores. Josh Prince scores.
  • Sean Halton singles on a ground ball to left fielder Brad McElroy. Sergio Miranda scores.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard grounds into a force out, third baseman Mark Sobolewski to second baseman Justin McClanahan. Sean Halton out at 2nd. Brock Kjeldgaard to 1st.
  • Sean McCraw walks. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd.
  • Juan Sanchez grounds into a force out, pitcher Dumas Garcia to shortstop Ryan Goins. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd. Sean McCraw out at 2nd. Juan Sanchez to 1st.
  • Peter Fatse flies out to left fielder Brad McElroy.

Dunedin Bottom 9th

  • Josh Prince remains in the game as the designated hitter.
  • Mark Sobolewski strikes out swinging, catcher Sean McCraw to first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Jon Talley strikes out swinging.
  • Yan Gomes doubles (14) on a fly ball to center fielder Erik Komatsu.
  • Brian Van Kirk walks.
  • Justin McClanahan hit by pitch. Yan Gomes to 3rd. Brian Van Kirk to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Ruben Flores replaces Corey Frerichs.
  • Welinton Ramirez singles on a ground ball to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Yan Gomes scores. Brian Van Kirk scores. Justin McClanahan to 2nd.
  • Brad McElroy strikes out swinging.

So there's your 4-3 final. As noted in earlier posts, a two-hour rain delay forced a short outing by RHP Kyle Heckathorn. Big 6'5", 235 LHP Daniel Meadows continued his impressive 2010, four innings of scoreless three-hit ball, walking none and fanning four -- still just 22, the former 49th round pick has always posted fine K-to-BB ratios, but he's been a beast this season, 73-to-17 in 77.1 innings, with only 67 hits allowed. It doesn't seem like it, but it was the 6th blown save for RHP Corey Frerichs (same school as Meadows, by the way, Temple College in Texas, a JUCO) when he allowed a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1, just one out away from victory in regulation. A few of those blown saves must have come in middle relief inherited runner situations.

CF Erik Komatsu doubled and singled (.322, OPB over .400 -- what a season) -- CF sure has become an organizational strength, or at least corner guys capable of playing CF has; 1B Sean Halton singled twice and walked; we know Angel Salome is painfully slow, but he sure has been an automatic pinch-run candidate in recent days -- guess that means he also has been reaching base late in games consistently...

CF Anthony Gose, who went from Philly to Houston to Toronto as part of the Roy Oswalt deal and netted the Astros 1B Brett Wallace, has now been caught stealing 29 times this year (38 stolen bases). 29 times!

Brevard County Game One Game Log

Uneventful early innings, but this is how Brevard carried that 1-0 lead to the bottom of the last regulation frame--

Brevard County Top 4th

  • Angel Salome reaches on fielding error by third baseman Mark Sobolewski.
  • Sergio Miranda grounds out, second baseman Justin McClanahan to first baseman Michael McDade. Angel Salome to 2nd.
  • Sean Halton singles on a line drive to right fielder Welinton Ramirez. Angel Salome to 3rd.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard grounds into a force out, third baseman Mark Sobolewski to second baseman Justin McClanahan. Angel Salome scores. Sean Halton out at 2nd. Brock Kjeldgaard to 1st.
  • Sean McCraw grounds out, pitcher Frank Gailey to first baseman Michael McDade.
