Re: Burgos

Not me MH! I was super bummed when the first go around in Low-A didn't go well. Iirc, his draft scouting report said he topped out around 90, maybe a tick more, but he K's a ton of guys. Reports state he is a tenacious pitcher who goes after guys with an intense demeanor, so maybe he is Bucci-esque inthat respect. He dominated winter ball, so seeing better results this time with the T-Rats is very encouraging.

Final: @Wisconsin 3, Peoria (Cubs) 1

Burgos celebrates birthday with a win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Starting pitcher Hiram Burgos gave the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a gift on his 23rd birthday. The right-hander toughed out a shaky first inning and settled in to pick up his second win as a starter with the team. Burgos allowed a run on six hits and struck out eight over seven innings in a 3-1 victory over the Peoria Chiefs Wednesday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Hunter Morris and Cameron Garfield provided the offense for the Rattlers in their second straight win over the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

Burgos walked the leadoff hitter to start the game, but the Rattlers defense turned a 6-4-3 double play to clear the bases. Then, Peoria put together back-to-back hits that placed runners at first and third. Brandon May sent a slow grounder to third that was fielded cleanly by Cutter Dysktra. But, the Chiefs (55-50 overall, 17-19 second half) took a 1-0 lead when Dykstra tripped and had no play when he got to his feet.

After that play, Burgos retired the next 12 batters he faced and let the Wisconsin hitters get back in the game.

Morris evened the score in bottom of the fourth inning. He lined a home run to right field to start the frame. That was the fifth homer of the season for the Wisconsin first baseman.

The Rattlers (44-62, 18-20) scored their winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Kentrail Davis doubled with two out and none on base. Chris Dennis and Khris Davis walked to load the bases and chase Peoria starting pitcher Frank Batista.

Garfield greeted Peoria reliever Ronny Morla with a sharp single to center that scored both Kentrail Davis and Dennis for a 3-1 lead.

Burgos began the season in the Wisconsin bullpen before being sent to Helena in the Pioneer League after a loss to Beloit on May 15. He went 3-0 in five starts for the Helena Brewers before being recalled to the Rattlers late in July. Burgos is 2-0 as a starter and has allowed two earned runs in 16 innings since returning to the Rattlers.

Efrain Nieves and Jon Pokorny each tossed a scoreless inning out of the Wisconsin bullpen to close out the Chiefs. Pokorny worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his eleventh save.

Game three of the series is Thursday night. Wisconsin has Eric Arnett (0-8, 6.27) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Peoria counters with Su-Min Jung (6-3, 3.84). Game time is 7:05 PM.

Thursday is a WIXX Thirsty Thursday. Fans may purchase 22 oz sodas and 16 oz. beers for $2 during the game. There is a special Thursday postgame fireworks display scheduled. After the fireworks, fans may play Launch-A-Ball and win great prizes from area businesses.

If you can't make it out to Time Warner Cable Field, you can tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM. The Miller Lite Pregame show starts at 6:45 PM.

***

The Rattlers have their own staff select a Player and Pitcher of the Month. July's winners are detailed here.

Wisconsin Box Score

You wouldn't know it by looking at his YTD or even July numbers, but Khris Davis had been really struggling the last couple of weeks, so his double, single, walk here is nice to see; but this game was all about the men on the mound -- it's actually pretty easy to be excited about all three hurlers today, as Chris detailed RHP Hiram Burgos' success above, LHP Efrain Nieves extended his scoreless inning streak and folks have been pointing out fellow southpaw Jon Pokorny's ridiculous peripherals for weeks and weeks now...

Wisconsin Game Log

Huge two-out hit for Cameron Garfield -- we never see him referred as Cam, as in Neely, so Cameron it is; guess the Peoria staff had an issue with the ball and strike calls here...

Wisconsin Bottom 6th

  • Cutter Dykstra grounds out, third baseman Matthew Cerda to first baseman Justin Bour.
  • Hunter Morris grounds out, pitcher Frank Batista to first baseman Justin Bour.
  • Kentrail Davis doubles (13) on a fly ball to center fielder Anthony Giansanti.
  • Chris Dennis walks.
  • Peoria Chiefs Pitching Coach David Rosario ejected by HP umpire Nick Mahrley.
  • Khristopher Davis walks. Kentrail Davis to 3rd. Chris Dennis to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Ronny Morla replaces Frank Batista.
  • Cameron Garfield singles on a ground ball to right fielder Nelson Perez. Kentrail Davis scores. Chris Dennis scores. Khristopher Davis to 2nd.
  • Joseph Paciorek grounds into a force out, shortstop Logan Watkins to second baseman George Matheus. Cameron Garfield out at 2nd.

It is easy to forget that Nieves is just 20 years old - his last month has thrust him back onto my prospect radar. Cameron Garfield is a top 20 Brewer prospect on my personal list even though his OPS is under .650. The 19 year old has acquitted himself very well in the Midwest League all year long, and if one looks closely, he gets a great deal of praise from those that see him every day. Thanks, thanks, thanks by the way to Mass and battlekow for doing the leg work to gather all this info together so that we can make these personal assessments. Without them it would be 100% guesswork instead of just 97%.....

Final (game one): DSL Brewers 4, @DSL Cardinals 1 (8 innings)

DSL Brewers box score

Jose Cepeda was great, striking out seven and walking none in seven innings while allowing just an unearned run, but left with the game tied. The Brewers rewarded his effort by scoring in "extra innings", aka the top of the 8th, to send him away a winner. Deivi Mejia walked twice and singled, and Juan de Leon doubled and was hit by a pitch. Jose R. Garcia and Hitaniel Arias were also on twice as well. Ruben Sanchez started and was 1-4. Dinonis Hinojosa started in left field and got finally got his first career plate appearances, though he was 0-4. Jose Pena did not play.

Huntsville explodes for 7 runs in the 6th inning. Lawrie has two doubles and two rbi's. Rivas with an okay outing tonight (love the strikeouts though).

Edit: Taylor Green with a grand slam too. Is it just me, or has he hit quite a few grand slams this year?

What?! Fredrickson with 11K's though 5 IP, can't talk about the hits and only one walk?!? Wow, my heart just stopped when I saw that.

Scarpetta continues to do all he can to rejoin his "PIC" Peralta in Huntsville

Edit: Also is there still any need for Taylor Green in AA he now has over 600 AA at bats has a nice OPS, a good BB/K ratio, hit for good power, has been driving in runs, and outside of his .278 BA the rest of his numbers point that he is ready to move up.

-Interesting with Green is that he is hitting breakdown

.229 with 10 doubles, 1 HR , with 1 RBI and a 11/23 bb/k with no one on base (144 AB's)

.320 with 16 doubles 8 HR's with 61 RBI's and 22/27 a bb/k with runners on (153 AB)

.308 with 12 doubles, 5 HR with 53RBI and a 16/17 bb/k with runners in scoring position (107 AB).

It appears he really clutchs up with people on base.

It's hard to figure what Scarpetta has to do to earn a promotion. In 5 of his last 7 starts he hasn't given up a run. He's already on the 40 man roster - seems like a perfect candidate to move up the ladder quickly.

Jeffress pitches two scoreless innings with 3K for Huntsville.

Kentrail Davis is dominating the Midwest League. (.972 OPS) I wonder if they would consider letting him head back up to Brevard County - or if they are just going to let him finish strong in Wisconsin.

Frederickson goes 6 IP with 12K and just 2BB. Lintz has also pitched a scoreless innings. Billings has not recorded a hit through 7 innings.

Is anyone listening to the broadcast? Has Steve mentioned his velocity at all? If it back in the mid 90's I may just faint lol. I hope this Fredickson is here to stay, this is what he has suppose to have done since being on of our supplemental 1st round pick (Odorizzi, Lasker, Bucci and Wooten prior to injury have really made up for the disappointment of Fredickson, Adams, Lintz....and the injuried then strangly cut Romanski. Watten, Bowman, and Meadows have also been been nice pitchers to have around.)

I'm wondering if the plan is to just let him finish in Wisconsin and have him start next season in Huntsville.
