Courtesy of the Rattler Radio Blog -- fun lineup, Cutter leading off, Khris Davis hasn't hit as low as 6th in forever, and Scooter at SS. Wouldn't read too much into that -- Michael Marseco has the night off, and he's really the only regular shortstop on the roster.

I've posted the game highlights from July 30, including some other stuff to give you a flavor of a night at the ballpark.

I'm also posting a video walking tour of the playing field, so you can see it from the players' perspective.

The links as always are on the SpaceCoastBaseball.com home page.

And a shameless reminder that SpaceCoastBaseball.com is financed out of my pocket, which is not very deep these days since I'm unemployed. The web site has no ads, so I rely on our visitors to help defray costs with a one-time donation or $5/month voluntary contribution. Click here to learn how you can help:

http://www.spacecoastbaseball.com/subscribe/

A convenient reminder here, since Stephen has a Manatee game this evening. The walking tour of the playing field is especially nice, I'm convinced no one has ever hit a ball over the batters' eye directly in center field, which is completely in play. Also, it must have been an optical illusion that the wind was blowing out to left on the day Stephen filmed.

When watching the 18-minute game highlight video, keep this roster link handy, which has the player / coach numbers of the Manatees.

The Manatees are in a delay home plate umpire got hit in the head with a foul tip and had to be taken off the field.

Edit: Games back on both managers got together and elected to have Brewers roving hitting instructor Darnell Coles take over as infield umpire.

An update from Monday's Link Report --

Mass Haas wrote:

Third round draft choice Tyler Thornburg started for Helena, but only went one inning. He had been going two innings. Hope all is well.

The Helena media indicated he had suffered from arm soreness, and he hadn't pitched in four weeks. Thornburg's one inning makes sense for his return.

***

We've now since learned that the initial Helena report was erroneous. Thornburg missed that time with an intercostal (side muscle) issue, so while it's not good he was out, the injury was not related to his arm -- nice!

Final: DSL Athletics 2, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

19-year-old 6'5" RHP Juan Francisco allowed eight baserunners in four innings in his start, surrendering both Athletic runs; also 19, LHP Juan Santiago had his best outing, 3.2 innings of scoreless walk-free baseball, fanning five; 18-year-old RHP Elvis Mora stranded two of Santiago's runners, then added a scoreless 9th inning...

That mound work was wasted, though, as the Cerveceros had only four singles (two by DH Orton Rodriguez) and two walks; still only 18 for a bit longer, statistically impressive CF Ruben Sanchez has only had a bit role in each of the last four games, perhaps ailing somehow...

DSL Brewers Game Log

Francisco worked his way into and out of trouble in a pretty remarkable initial frame --

DSL Athletics Top 1st

  • Rodolfo Penalo walks.
  • With Gabriel Santana batting, Rodolfo Penalo steals (5) 2nd base.
  • Gabriel Santana walks.
  • Reynaldo Mateo hit by pitch. Rodolfo Penalo to 3rd. Gabriel Santana to 2nd.
  • Michael Soto pops out to second baseman Jorge De La Cruz on the infield fly rule.
  • Diego Ledezma lines out to third baseman Juan De Leon.
  • Luis Osorio grounds out, second baseman Jorge De La Cruz to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.

Down 2-0 in the 7th, it became pretty comical for the D-Crew on the basepaths --

DSL Brewers Bottom 7th

  • Orton Rodriguez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Charli Blanco.
  • With Hitaniel Arias batting, Orton Rodriguez steals (3) 2nd base.
  • Hitaniel Arias walks.
  • Ronny Puello flies out to left fielder Jose Sayegh. Orton Rodriguez to 3rd.
  • With Jose Pena batting, Hitaniel Arias picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Cristhian Perez to first baseman Michael Soto.
  • Jose Pena walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Victor Trinidad replaces Cristhian Perez.
  • With Juan De Leon batting, Jose Pena picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Victor Trinidad to first baseman Michael Soto.

During a very recent Milwaukee TV broadcast, the subject of outfield arms came up with Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder, and the name Raul Mondesi, the former Dodger with a cannon arm, was mentioned.

And I thought, you know, the Brewers are getting smoked, and of course, the TV audience is never really introduced to players at the lowest level of the minors (and I can understand that), but what a good time for a cool and interesting tidbit that could be shared with the Brewer audience. If only the guys mentioned, even in passing, that Raul's son had recently been signed and was playing for the DSL squad, and that, in the comments we've read from Gord Ash, that at his young age, he's not the imposing specimen his dad was, at least not yet.

So I'm practically screaming at the TV for Brian to mention this, but of course, the opportunity passes.

At least I know Cory Provus is a Link Report fan (Jim Powell made sure of that), along with Adam M. and yes, even the J-S guys to some extent.

Butler 6IP, 5H, 2ER, 3BB, 5K

Rogers 6IP, 4H, 2ER, 2BB, 10K

Heckathorn 5IP, 6H, 3ER, 4BB, 1K

Lasker 7IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 3K

Updated stats -- Heckathorn, Butler and Rogers are done for the night. I'd suspect Lasker is out after 7 IP.

Rarely has a headlined group of starting pitching actually lived up to potential.

He did leave the game on Saturday after being HBP twice; he was also hit twice in a game a few days before.

Final: Jupiter 7, @Brevard County 6

Brevard County box score

Kyle Heckathorn allowed three runs in the 1st inning but settled down thereafter, working the next four innings without incident. He uncharacteristically walked four and continues to be contact-oriented, striking out just one but getting 10 ground outs against three fly outs. BC took the lead back with four runs in the 3rd, but Jupiter matched that with a grand slam in the 6th against Trey Watten to retake the lead. The Manatees got two back in the bottom of the 7th but couldn't come all the way back. Angel Salome led the 'Tees with three hits, and Josh Prince was also on three times on the strength of two singles and a walk. Sergio Miranda and Brock Kjeldgaard each had two hits, and Erik Komatsu singled and walked.

Brevard County play-by-play

Heckathorn's trying start:

Jupiter Top 1st

  • Kevin Mattison flies out to center fielder Erik Komatsu.
  • Javier Guzman singles on a ground ball to right fielder Scott Krieger.
  • Paul Gran grounds out, shortstop Josh Prince to first baseman Sergio Miranda. Javier Guzman to 2nd.
  • Jeremy Synan walks.
  • Ernesto Manzanillo singles on a ground ball to shortstop Josh Prince. Javier Guzman to 3rd. Jeremy Synan to 2nd.
  • Jake Smolinski walks. Javier Guzman scores. Jeremy Synan to 3rd. Ernesto Manzanillo to 2nd.
  • Thomas
Hickman singles on a fly ball to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
Jeremy Synan scores. Ernesto Manzanillo scores. Jake Smolinski to
    2nd.
  • Brett Hayes strikes out swinging.

No line drives in there, so take the walks out and I think he's fine.

BC batted around in the 3rd:

Brevard County Bottom 3rd

  • Sean McCraw doubles (3) on a fly ball to left fielder Jeremy Synan.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a line drive to center fielder Kevin Mattison. Sean McCraw to 3rd.
  • With Juan Sanchez batting, wild pitch by Johnny Dorn, Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd.
  • Juan
Sanchez grounds out, third baseman Jake Smolinski to first baseman Paul
Gran. Sean McCraw scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd.
  • Josh
Prince singles on a fly ball to center fielder Kevin Mattison. Brock
Kjeldgaard scores. Josh Prince to 2nd on the throw.
  • Peter Fatse grounds out, second baseman Ernesto Manzanillo to first baseman Paul Gran. Josh Prince to 3rd.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a line drive to left fielder Jeremy Synan. Josh Prince scores.
  • Angel Salome singles on a ground ball to right fielder Thomas Hickman. Erik Komatsu to 2nd.
  • Sergio Miranda singles on a line drive to left fielder Jeremy Synan. Erik Komatsu scores. Angel Salome to 2nd.
  • Scott Krieger flies out to right fielder Thomas Hickman.

Final: @Nashville 4, Round Rock 2

Sounds take 4-2 finale from Express

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds derailed the Round Rock Express, 4-2, on Tuesday night at historic Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game set.

Luis Cruz recorded his team-leading ninth three-hit game of the season in the win, while Mat Gamel and Adam Stern each added two hits.

Winners of the last three games and six of the last seven contests against Round Rock, Nashville's (59-51) victory tonight knotted the season series, 8-8.

The Sounds scored first for 68th time this season, as second baseman Eric Farris smacked a double down the first base line and scored as Gamel hit a bloop single to centerfield. The RBI was Gamel's 22nd RBI in the last 16 games.

Nashville plated another run in the next inning as Cruz and Stern hit consecutive single to open the frame. Cruz advanced to third on a wild pitch from Express starter Yorman Bazardo and came home for a 2-0 lead on an infield groundout from Ben Johnson.

The Express put a run on the board in the top of third inning as Sounds starter Josh Butler gave up a walk to the pitcher to begin the frame, followed by single by Jack Shuck. Later in the inning with two outs, Butler threw a wild pitch that allowed Bazardo to score from third for a 2-1 lead.

Round Rock knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Shuck walked and then came home on two straight singles from Brian Bogusevic and Drew Locke.

Nashville went back ahead at 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gamel led off the inning with a 13-pitch at-bat that culminated with a walk after fouling off seven two-strike pitches. Cruz's third hit of the game advanced Gamel to second base, with both runners advancing to scoring position on a wild pitch from Bazardo. With two outs in the inning, Stern knocked home both runners with a weak single to centerfield.

In his second start of the season, Bazardo (2-4) gave up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.

In his second quality start in his third Triple-A outing, Butler (2-1) earned the win, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in six innings thrown.

Nashville held the opposition to two runs or less for 16th time this season, while the bullpen added three scoreless innings behind Butler.

Donovan Hand tossed one scoreless frame in relief for his sixth consecutive outing without allowing a run. Mitch Stetter's shutout frame tied him with Rich Sauveur for 160 career appearances in Sounds history.

Round Rock rallied to load the bases with two outs in the ninth frame, but closer Chris Smith struck out Wladimir Sutil to end the game and pick up his 21st save of the season to tie him with Las Vegas' Jeremy Accardo for the PCL lead.

The Sounds will travel west to begin an eight-game road trip, beginning at 9:05 pm CT against the Reno Aces at Aces Ballpark in Reno for the opener of a four-game series. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren (7-5, 5.02) will make the start for Nashville against veteran Reno right-hander Kris Benson (1-2, 9.78).

Nashville box score

Pretty nice game from Butler, and he did a good job of keeping the ball on the ground: 10/3 GO/AO. 62 of his 100 pitches were strikes. Not sure if the recap is saying the Stetter tied the Sounds' record for

career appearances, but that's what it sounds (ha) like. I doubt Mitch is particularly happy about that achievement, whether it's a record or not. Another good line from Gamel; you can listen to his RBI single here. Cruz's bat, such as it is, has been a modest surprise.

Final: @Wisconsin 4, Peoria 2

Maverick & Rattlers shoot down Peoria

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rebounded against a season-long nemesis and it was Maverick Lasker who led the way. Lasker pitched seven solid inning and was backed up with offense from Kentrail Davis and Chris Dennis in a 5-1 victory over the Peoria Chiefs Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Peoria had been 8-1 against the Rattlers in the first nine meetings of the season between the teams.

Davis put the Rattlers (43-62 overall, 17-20 second half) in front in the bottom of the first inning. His sacrifice fly to left field sent Scooter Gennett home from third base for a 1-0 lead.

Peoria (55-49, 17-19) tied the game on an unearned run in the top of the third inning. Jae-Hoon Ha singled, stole second, stole third, and scored when the throw to third was misplayed.

But, the Rattlers answered right away in the bottom of the third inning. Erik Miller walked to start the inning. One out later, Gennett singled and Hunter Morris walked to load the bases. Davis knocked in Miller with another sacrifice fly. Dennis followed with a two-run double to put the Rattlers up 4-1.

Lasker took over the game from there. The right-hander allowed a total of three hits and struck out three as he picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season.

Left fielder Khris Davis helped Lasker keep the Chiefs from mounting any type of rally on the evening. He made three outstanding catches to rob Peoria hitters of extra bases.

Dennis added an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give him 64 RBI for the season and cap the scoring for the night.

Matt Costello worked two scoreless innings and picked up his first save for the Timber Rattlers.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon. Hiram Burgos (2-5, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Frank Batista (2-2, 3.38) is set to start for Peoria. It is an American TV Win-It Wednesday. Every fan aged 16 and older will receive a scratch-off ticket. Every ticket is a winner with prizes from the Timber Rattlers and American TV of Appleton. Game time is 12:05pm.

If you can’t make it out to the game, you can tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am.

Wisconsin box score

Deuces were wild for the T-Rats: Kentrail Davis had two singles and two sac flies, Dennis had two doubles, and Morris, Gennett, and Cameron Garfield all also had two hits. Cutter Dykstra went 0-4 as the leadoff hitter with D'Vontrey Richardson getting the night off. Lasker walked only one.

Wisconsin play-by-play

Gennett started at shortstop and made an error on his first chance there.
