Carlos Marmol's 9th inning today:

BB

K

BB

BB

K

3-RBI Double

K

Cubs lose 5-3. If they finish 12-27, they will lose 100. Assuming they have a 40% chance of winning each game from here on out, their chance of losing >100 is 8.82%. Those are certainly not "unreasonable" expectations.

He's a lock Hall of Famer--probably on the first ballot.

He won a batting title and an MVP, and was the best position player on all those Braves playoff teams.

I agree he should be a lock to getting in. I don't agree necessarily he was the best position player on all those Braves Playoff teams. Andruw Jones was probably the better player on several different teams.

Chipper was clearly the superior hitter, but Jones was a very good hitter, and the best defensive CF'er of all time according to many. Just incredible in CF.

Brandon Morrow is really good. Would have been nice if Doug tried exploring a trade for him with Seattle this past offseason. I believe at one time his name was thrown around in trade rumors to the Brewers.
I read this a lot on this board it seems. I'd be willing to bet that two members of this site could go back in time and be flies on the wall throughout the entire 09-10 off-season, that you'd find out that he did try exploring a trade for him with Seattle.

Sometimes, things just don't work out for whatever reason. Why do we all assume that because something didn't happen (usually after the fact) that Melvin didn't even try to do it?

edit: shoot, forgot to post what I originally came to post. Todd Helton just tied Willie Mays for 36th all-time in doubles.

I agree with your stance in general, but the fact that Morrow was traded for a relief pitcher is what stirs the pot on this particular deal. Wouldn't have taken much to get Morrow, but apparently just about every other GM in the league felt Morrow wasn't worth a higher price.

Parra and an A level prospect could have done it. I dunno, just guessing.

Oswalt actually had to make a put out in left, too. Crowd loved it.

edit: Oh, and I loved the skydiver that missed his mark in Texas last night and put himself on the flag pole. Great stuff.

Finally seen the Expos special on MLB Network today. Really enjoyed it, thought it was very well done and it taught me a lot about the Expos I would have never known. Man that 1994 team was damn good.

Yeah, I just finished watching it (I'd DVR'd it). It was so well done. Narrated by Matt Vasgersian, to boot. Ken Macha got a sound byte. Oh, and "Dave Kerwin" even makes a couple appearances in the last 5 min. or so (he was their pitching coach in '94 iirc).

Mariano Rivera loves to shag balls during BP (it's a running joke that he's the Yankees best outfielder) but today I found out that during BP he will sometimes hit a water bottle off the top of a water cooler from center field, for fun. From 380 ft away. Insane. I love him. I want to meet the person who hates him because I don't think that person exists.

He was. Everyone was talking about Gamel for Morrow and Morrow ended up being traded for a reliever and a middling outfield prospect.

A middling outfield prospect who had a higher OPS than Lawrie last year in the Midwest league. Parra would not have gotten it done either as Jack Z specifically targeted League as a "proven" reliever. He wasn't interested in trading one possible starting pitcher who hadn't fulfilled his upside yet for another one who throws with the other arm, is older and has less of a pedigree. My guess is something like Coffey/Gamel would have been the minimum needed to get a deal done.

Yeah, a year older than Lawrie his second time through the league. When he was Lawrie's age he posted a .595 OPS in 400 at bats in the same league.

As much as I like Morrow, I would not have traded Gamel for him. Mainly because we need Gamel big time next year when Prince is gone.

I was reading an interview with Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long and wanted to share this part:

Q: Boyhood idol?

A: I was a Milwaukee Brewers batboy in 1981-'82 in spring training. Cecil Cooper was a guy I emulated as I would swing . . . just how smooth he was . . . he was left-handed and so was I. I loved the way he could use the whole field. He didn't seem to strike out a lot. There was some gracefulness to his swing, kind of like Robby Cano.

not really "news" but did anybody else see the guy in Oakland tonight that fell while attempting a catch in bleachers? The MLB Tonight guys are just ripping him for how funny it was. You really need to see the entire sequence from beginning to end, though, to get the full effect.

If you like feel good stories look up John Lindsey. A 33 year old rookie with over 5000 minor league ABs finally got his first major league AB last light. To make things more interesting he was brought into the game on Thursday night as a pinch hitter and they brought in a new RP and Lindsey got PH hit for again not getting an AB, which seems pretty fitting for someone who took so long to get brought up in the first place, heh.
