Sorry for the late update guys...I was down the hall.

Stars hosting Mississippi today and we just had a pop up shower at the ballpark that lasted for about 20 minutes. They got the tarp on just in time and are pulling it off now. I'm guessing a 1:30 or so start. We will go to crowd mic only in a moment and then get the coverage started around 5 to 10 minutes before first pitch.

Thanks!

***OFFICIAL START TIME IS 1:45***

Final, completed early: Jupiter (Marlins) 2, @Brevard County 1, seven plus innings, rain

That must have been one heck of a rain system coming through for this game to be called at the point it was. Bottom of the 8th, speedster Josh Prince with a leadoff walk, and that's it. If the delay had come before the game became official, it would have been suspended.

Game Time Weather: 89 degrees, sunny.

Wind: 7 mph, R to L.

T: 2:10 (:58 delay).

Brevard County Box Score

Only one run for the Tees' despite a 2-for-3 day from Peter Fatse in the 2-spot as the DH, and perfect games from 2B Sergio Miranda and RF Scott Krieger, batting 5th and 6th, respectively...

Final: @Wisconsin 6, Clinton (Mariners) 1

BUCCI & RICHARDSON HELP RATTLER GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK

Chris Mehring, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Nick Bucci and D'Vontrey Richardson led the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 6-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Bucci struck out eight over six scoreless innings for his fifth win of the season. Richardson had three hits - including a homer - and scored three runs to help the Rattlers snap a four-game losing streak.

Richardson started the Wisconsin first inning with a double. One out later, Hunter Morris singled in Richardson for a 1-0 lead.

There were two outs and none on base in the bottom of the second inning when Michael Marseco reached on an error and Erik Miller walked to bring Richardson to the plate. The Rattlers centerfielder lifted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left for a three-run homer and a 4-0 Wisconsin lead. The home run was the first for Richardson since May 24.

Wisconsin (42-61 overall, 16-19 second half) added their final runs of the game in the fourth inning. Miller doubled and Richardson walked to put two on base. Scooter Gennett doubled in both runners and the Rattlers were up 6-0.

The six-run lead was more than enough for Bucci. The starter cruised through six innings by allowing three hits and striking out eight. No LumberKing passed second base while Bucci was in the game.

Clinton (53-50, 16-18) did get a run in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single by Matt Cerione. However, Richardson picked up an outfield assist on the play as he threw Cerione out as the LumberKing tried to stretch his hit into a double. Richardson has 14 outfield assists this season.

Matt Costello, who allowed the run in the top of the seventh, worked a scoreless eighth. Jon Pokorny pitched a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts.

The series concludes on Monday night at 7:05 PM. Wisconsin sends Jake Odorizzi (6-1, 2.98) to the mound as the starting pitcher. Clinton has Tom Wilhemlsen, a former Milwaukee Brewers farmhand, making his first Midwest League start of the season in Monday's game. Also, the first 1,000 fans into the ballpark will receive a mouse pad from the Rattlers and Rasmussen College.

If you can't make it to the game, you can tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM. The Miller Lite Pregame Show begins at 6:45 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

The bulldog Nick Bucci, positive results far more often than not, a stellar outing here; powerful Khris Davis, with two steals here, now 13-for-20 in that category; swap D'Vontrey Richardson's walk for a triple and he'd have a cycle -- great game, but speaking of stolen base attempts, Richardson has been successful on less than half of his, only 13-for-27; only Cameron Garfield failed to reach base, so click the box score link to check out everyone's efforts...

Wisconsin Game Log

Bucci pitched out of mini-jams in the 3rd and 4th --

Clinton Top 3rd

  • Daniel Carroll called out on strikes.
  • Matthew Cerione walks.
  • Gabriel Noriega singles on a line drive to left fielder Khristopher Davis. Matthew Cerione to 2nd.
  • Luis Nunez grounds into double play, first baseman Hunter Morris to shortstop Michael Marseco to pitcher Nicholas Bucci. Gabriel Noriega out at 2nd.

Clinton Top 4th

  • James Jones bunt grounds out, pitcher Nicholas Bucci to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Jupiter tops BC in rain-shortened game

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - With the tying run on and no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Brevard County Manatees were looking to start a rally, but Mother Nature had other plans. A 58 minute rain delay turned into Sunday afternoon's game being called early with the Jupiter Hammerheads edging the Manatees 2-1 at Space Coast Stadium.

Josh Prince led off the eighth with a walk with Peter Fatse - who was 2-for-3 at that point - coming to bat. The Hammerheads (34-68, 13-22) decided to make a pitching change and bring Ryan Tucker into the game, but Tucker never threw a pitch as the tarp went on the field and the game was eventually called.

Jupiter got on the board first in the second as Jake Smolinski tripled to left to score Ben Lasater. The Manatees (49-55, 22-14) had a chance to answer right back in the bottom of the inning as Sergio Miranda and Scott Krieger led off with back-to-back singles. Sean McCraw then advanced them both 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. But Brock Kjeldgaard flew out to center and Kyle Dhanani grounded out to third to end the threat.

Brevard County finally got on the board in the sixth as Miranda drove in Erik Komatsu on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Krieger was up next with a runner on second and singled to left as Sean Halton tried to score from second but was gunned down by Javier Guzman for the final out of the inning.

Manatees starter Darren Byrd's day finished in the seventh as he left the game with two on and two out. Brandon Ritchie came in and his second pitch went to the backstop, allowing Brett Hayes and Thomas Hickman to advance to second and third respectively.

Pinch hitter Jeremy Synan then singled to left to score Hickman and give the Hammerheads a 2-1 lead. Byrd allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits, while walking three and striking out two in 6 2/3 innings.

Krieger was 3-for-3 on the afternoon, while Fatse and Miranda each had two hits, with Miranda driving in the lone Manatee run.

Game three of the four-game series will be Monday at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). The Manatees will send Dan Merklinger (5-4, 4.10) to the mound to try and end Brevard County's two-game losing streak.

Yeah, that extra-innings thing didn't go so well. The H-Crew rallied with four huge runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, only to see the previously untouchable Eric Marzec allow four in the 12th. Final: @Huntsville 2, Mississippi 1 (10 innings)

Huntsville box score

Wily Peralta continues to be successful despite drastically reduced strikeout numbers: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 10/3 GO/AO, 79 pitches, 47 strikes. As you can see from the GO/AO, he also maintained his worm-burning ways, which is no doubt part of the answer to his continued effectiveness. Nick Green and Jeremy Jeffress each followed with two scoreless innings; Jeffress struck out one, walked none, allowed two hits, and got four ground outs. Brett Lawrie may be starting another hot streak; he was 2-5 with his 14th triple today. Lee Haydel and Dayton Buller also had two hits, Taylor Green was hitless but walked twice, and Caleb Gindl was 1-5 and had an outfield assist.

Huntsville play-by-play

In both of his starts for the Stars, Peralta has taken advantage of a very well-timed pick-off:

Mississippi Top 6th

  • Antoan Richardson singles on a ground ball to third baseman Taylor Green.
  • With Yasser Gomez batting, Antoan Richardson steals (17) 2nd base.
  • Yasser Gomez walks.
  • With Eric Duncan batting, Wily Peralta picks off Antoan Richardson at 2nd on throw to Zelous Wheeler.
  • Eric Duncan singles on a line drive to right fielder Drew T. Anderson. Yasser Gomez to 3rd.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Mauro Gomez grounds into double play, second baseman Brett Lawrie to first baseman Chris Nowak. Eric Duncan out at 2nd.

The Stars tied the game at one in the 7th:

Huntsville Bottom 7th

  • Brett Lawrie triples (14) on a fly ball to right fielder Michael Daniel.
  • Caleb Gindl reaches on fielding error by second baseman Eric Duncan. Brett Lawrie scores.
  • Zelous Wheeler flies out to right fielder Michael Daniel.
  • Drew T. Anderson flies out to left fielder Yasser Gomez.
  • Chris Nowak singles on a ground ball to second baseman Eric Duncan. Caleb Gindl to 2nd.

  • Taylor Green walks. Chris Nowak to 2nd.
  • Lee
Haydel singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Juan Abreu. Chris
Nowak scores. Taylor Green to 2nd. Throwing error by pitcher Juan

Brewers rally in the ninth, but fall in extras

By Brett Billings, Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extras, but fell to the Billings Mustangs after a four-run 12th inning. The loss puts Helena's record back at an even .500 on the year (20-20), 1-1 in the second half.

The Brewers seemed flat for the first eight frames, only managing one run on four hits. The run came in the fifth inning when Brandon Sizemore hit a two-out double to score Carlos George, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame. The hit made the score 5-1 in favor of Billings and stayed the same until the ninth inning.

The inning started with a single from Gerald Ogrinc. After George struck out, Robbie Garvey and Sizmore hit back-to-back singles to score Ogrinc. Cody Hawn followed with a walk and was pinch run for by Connor Lind. After RBI singles from Greg Hopkins, Shea Vucinich, and Mike Walker, the Brewers tied the game and had the bases loaded with one out. Billings' pitcher Daniel Wolford worked out of the jam, getting John Dishon to ground into a force out at the plate and striking out Ogrinc to end the inning.

The score remained nodded at five apiece until the top of the 12th, and it changed in a hurry. Eric Marzec began the inning on the mound. He recorded the first two outs of the frame but allowed four runs on four hits including a two-run homerun in the process.

The Mustangs had another four-run advantage in the bottom of the inning, and they held it to improve to 22-18 on the year, 1-1 in the second half.

Stosh Wawrzasek (0-3, 6.43) started on the hill for Helena. He couldn't get out of the fifth and was relieved by Chad Robinson, who recorded the final two outs of the frame.

Wawrzasek exited the game after 4.1 innings of work. He allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one in the no-decision.

Austin Ross was solid out of the pen. The Shreveport, LA native, tossed four scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and struck out two.

Ryan Bernal also made an appearance in the game. He pitched two scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one.

Marzec (2-3, 2.40) received the loss. The four runs in the 12th inning were the first earned runs he's allowed in 14.1 innings of work this season.

The Brewers will face the Mustangs again tomorrow night in a rubber match. LHP Tanner Robles (2-0, 4.78) is scheduled to start for Billings. RHP Tyler Thornburg (0-0, 1.50) is slated to take the mound for Helena. The 3rd round pick in the 2010 draft has been out with arm problems since his last start on July 5th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Another day, another triple for Lawrie. Make that 14 on the year to go along with 28 SB.
Lawrie needs just five more to tie the Southern League's all-time record at 19. Alan Trammell set the mark in 1977 when playing for Montgomery.

Gennett now has 35(!) doubles on the season.

I would complain about a clear plan for Gamel, but Escobar had a clear plan for his development - and the results have not been stellar. Maybe there is just no good way to develop prospects, they might all mature very differently.

Everything I read talks about how the Brewers have no pitchers ready to help the major league team, but right now Jeffress, Rivas, Rogers and Peralta are all having a decent amount of success at Huntsville. All four of them could play a role for the Brewers next year.

I wonder if Salome every looks at the players catching in Nashville or Huntsville and ponders what happened...

Final: @Nashville 7, Round Rock 6

Sounds score two in ninth for come-from-behind 7-6 win

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to top the Round Rock Express, 7-6, on Sunday night at historic Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game set.

Second baseman Eric Farris hit a leadoff single to begin the inning and advanced to third as Mat Gamel followed with a base hit down the right field line. Erick Almonte added his first game-tying RBI of the season in the next at-bat as the professional hitter brought home Farris with an infield groundout to knot the game at six apiece. Brendan Katin's third hit of the night moved Almonte to second base, while Norris Hopper plated Almonte with an RBI single to center for the game-winning run.

The victory was Nashville's (57-51) 15th last at-bat win and eight come-from-behind victory trailing in the seventh inning or later this season. Hopper has accounted for three of Nashville's game-winning hits.

Sounds starter Marty McLeary helped us own cause and broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The veteran right-hander crushed the first pitch he saw from Express starter Andy Van Hekken over the fence in left center for a 1-0 Nashville lead.

The home run by McLeary was Nashville's first hit by a pitcher in the last three seasons and second of his career, as he previously went deep on September 3, 2007 as a member of the Indianapolis Indians. Tim Dillard was the last pitcher to homer for the Sounds on June 28, 2007 at Albuquerque.

In the next frame, second baseman Farris hit a line drive to the right center gap and stretched it into a double to lead off the frame. Gamel then knocked home Farris with another double down the first base line for a 2-0 Nashville advantage. The RBI was Gamel's 21st in his last 14 contests, as the slugger was tied for second among all PCL hitters with 28 RBIs in July.

After an intentional walk to Katin, shortstop Luis Cruz singled home Gamel for the next run. Van Hekken was then replaced for Mark Melancon, who surrendered an RBI grounder on the first pitch up the middle to Hopper to plate Katin. The Sounds scored their final run of the frame to make it 5-0 on a fielding error that allowed Cruz to score.

In the Round Rock seventh, left fielder Colin DeLome put Round Rock on the board with his 10th home run of the season, a two-out solo shot over the right field wall. The Express tacked on three runs in the next inning, as Round Rock began the inning with a single and a double, followed by a two-run triple by Jack Shuck that cut the lead to two runs. After McLeary was replaced with Dillard, Edwin Maysonet singled to left field to cut the Nashville lead to 5-4.

With the Sounds leading 5-4 in the top of the ninth, Chris Smith blew his fourth save of the season after DeLome hit his second home run to right field to tie the game. German Duran followed with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on an infield groundout, and came home on a double steal. Since returning to Nashville from Milwaukee, Smith has recorded a 7.61 ERA (11er/13.0ip) in his last 12 outings.

Both teams recorded blown saves on the night, with one pitcher taking the win and the other a loss. Smith (3-3) backed into the win after surrendering two runs on two hits in one inning pitched. Chris Sampson (0-1) blew a save and took the loss after giving up two runs in 2/3 innings thrown.

McLeary matched his season-high with seven plus innings pitched, allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Dillard tossed a shutout inning for the Sounds in relief.

Nashville banged out 15 hits as Gamel and Katin each had three hits in the victory. Martin Maldonado hit a ground-rule double for the second consecutive night to go 1-for-4 on the night, as the catcher has now hit safely in 16 of his last 17 contests. Farris also added two hits to record a hit in 15 of his last 16 games.

Van Hekken allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn a no decision.

The Sounds and Express will continue with the third game of a four-game set at 7:05 pm CT at historic Greer Stadium on Monday night. Nashville southpaw Sam Narron (6-4, 3.90) will take the mound against Round Rock righty Shane Loux (2-10, 7:03).

Nashville box score

You can listen to Hopper's walk-off hit here. Gamel, who started at third base, continues to swing a hot stick. Lorenzo Cain was 0-4 with a walk and an outfield assist. How about Marty McLeary--clearly motivated by a strong desire to win over MH--knocking one out? I think either Brock Kjeldgaard or Scott Krieger earlier this year had a sac bunt and a homer in the same game, and McLeary pulled it off as well today. While we're at it, how about the tying run in the top of the 9th coming in on a double steal? Bold and daring.

Keep in mind that Gord Ash said that Gamel would still receive starts at third base, as well as those in RF and at 1B. I'm happy to hear about the team looking in to where both he and Lawrie fit in best moving forward. I agree that it's a couple of months late with Gamel, but he once again is proving that his bat is legit, and hopefully that continues the next time he gets his chance in Milwaukee. Few prospects have had consistently good since beginning their professional careers.
