Last page in a topic is blank: we're looking for specific reports

When I click on the baseball to go to the next new post, as I just did in the draft choice 1-5 thread i'm sometimes taken to a new page which is blank with no new posts. This happens also when I'm reading a thread and it has a "next" page, but there are no posts on that page. It only happens occassionally.

 

I'm wondering if this is an issue on my end, something with Yuku or perhaps moderation going on.

This bug has been around since August 2008 and has been reported. You're not doing anything wrong.

I'm going to try reporting this again. Bugs are now getting attention based on votes. I'm sure that we can get plenty of them.

 

When you run into this bug, it would help a lot if you could come back to this topic and tell us:

1. The URL you used.
2. The number of posts posts per page you're viewing.
3. Whether you landed on a blank page or something else that was unexpected.
4. Something identifying the last post in the topic (once you find it). This could be the time and date plus the member's name (including your time zone), or a quote, or whatever. Don't rely on the reply number in this case. Reply numbers are part of the problem.

As topics are reported, I'll make copies of them for testing purposes. Once we have a few examples, I'll re-report the bug and ask members to vote for it to be addressed.

Yes, I believe so. I use the default settings. The last post is by bjkrautk on page 27. There is a page 28 without posts.

"miggs" at October 22, 2010 4:54 PM (Central) was the first new post it should have brought me to. "RockCoCougars" at October 22, 2010 7:44 PM (Central) was the most recent post at the time I clicked the link and got the blank page instead.

 

 

Note: This happens to me in that thread almost everytime. I'm guessing you know already, but it seems like certain threads are plagued with that problem, rather than it being just a general thing that happens all over the place. It seems to me that most threads always work fine, and some thread always give me a problem.

It happens in long topics with hidden posts. It affects members at different times than mods/admins, but we're all affected. Depending on your posts per page setting, it'll kick in at different times. Changing your posts per page setting won't help. All that will do is change when the bug rears its ugly head.

 

Another thing that happens at times is that when clicking on the last page number next to the topic title, the reader is taken to the second last page of the topic. Also, very occasionally, when members link directly to a post, the link won't link. If you see either of those two things happening, I'd appreciate reports on those, too.

 

The last annoying aspect of this bug is that when hidden posts are present, mods/admins see different reply numbers than members. I'm afraid that's by design. That's easy to identify, so I don't need reports on that.

 

Where this is going to get tricky is that we have to come up with "steps to reproduce" for the developers to address this. That's might be hard. I think I'm going to have to create some test threads, posting under two or three different usernames with different access levels (member vs. mod/admin).

When you run into this, are there generally a few new posts in the topic, or are there lot of new posts? Or doesn't it seem to make a difference?

 

I'm trying to reproduce this, and I haven't had much luck so far. I've been using member-level profiles at 20 and 30 posts per page.

Thanks for the reports so far. I'm hoping that we can get something submitted by the end of the week. I'd like to isolate something tangible regarding reproducibility. But even if a pattern is tough to pin down, the more reports there are, the more developers will have to work with.
