Question for dog owners

My dog is starting to walk on it today,so it obviously was just a sprain and a lesson learned that i probably should have just given it a day or at least a few more hours.I'm assuming in retrospect,if it was really serious,he'd have seemed in extreme pain and he really looked more scared/upset than in bad pain.
Yea, but like you said, your dog can't talk & tell you exactly what's going on. Especially with a small dog, whose bones & tendons (etc.) are tiny, you did the right thing to take him to the vet. Even though $200 is not nice to pay, it's better (imho) than not taking him & finding out that your inaction hurt Tyson more in the long run (losing his leg, for example).

Granted, this time wasn't anything too serious, but when you described the accident/incident in the original post, I was immediately concerned for the dog. I wondered if his tendon(s) had been torn or something bad. Luckily for everyone, no such bad luck. He's a beautiful dog, and sounds like he's highly active (and a blast to be friends with!), so I'd imagine this won't be the last time Tyson hurts himself by going out gangbusters. Look at it as a learning experience, even if it did cost $200. He's ok, and won't have any long-term damage. That's the important thing. Enjoy that gorgeous, happy dog!

Thanks for the link backupcatchers,i'll check it out

doesn't that just aggrevate you to no end? It takes forever to get them to do what you want yet seemingly in minutes they learn something to their advantage. If I didn't love dogs I'd hate them.

Yep

He managed to learn the word treat in about two days, but come here or stop chewing all my damn cords doesn't register.Of course if i say come here and have anything in my hand that smells like meat,he manages to come from a block away.

I knew going in that dogs love food, but underestimated just how much.I barely have to vacum anymore because Tyson eats almost anything he finds and if i have actual meat/dog treats,he literally starts shaking like if you waved a vial of crack in front of a crackhead. Then you give the food and if it's not big, there is no chewing or enjoying the taste, just inhale and swallow.

Most dogs are like that. What's worse is when you get one that isn't treat reactive. One of my dogs is like that. When I was training her for frisbee she was so focused on the playing she didn't care about food. I usually get dogs to bring the toy back by putting food it in a ring by my feet. They got the food when I got them to put it in the ring. She was so focused on the game she didn't even react to chicken or fish. I ended up having to out wait her. I'd go out and throw the frisbee and wait 15 minutes until she brought it were I wanted then throw it and wait agian. Until she realized playing was not going to continue until the boss was satisfied. Stubborn little beast.

  • 7 months later...

Hi all, just had a similar situation with my 4 month old rat terrier(Oliver) last night. Left Oliver alone for a moment and came rushing to him yelping and barking sitting on his side favoring one of his hind legs as soon as i picked him up he stops the barking and yelping but was whimpering and we eventulally went to bed. This morn he is still favoring his hind leg and will not put any pressure on it but the whimpering has stopped. Just wondering if anyone knows of a good vet in the Milwaukee area? And for someone on a tight budget, would a Vet clinic have payment plan options? Moved back here about a 2 months ago and have not taken Oliver anywhere since the move. Thanks.

Sorry that I can't be of specific, vet-tip-off help, DannyK... but I'd have to guess that any Vet clinic worth its salt is going to be able to work out a payment plan with you. They'll probably just be happy that you're there actually taking care of your pal - think of how many neglected dogs there are out there!

btw - "Oliver" is a sweet dog name.

Check the webbing between his toes.

Often in this weather they get salt stuck in their toes and it causes an open wound. Rubbing salt on an open wound hurts. If he only yelped the once, Id give him a day or 2 to cure himself. Dogs can hurt those pads and since they have 4 legs (obvious) they just dont use it when its bothering them.

I learned a semi expensive lesson about rushing my dog to the vet instead of first giving a few days to see if he'd be ok. If they have just say a sprain or sore that simply needs a bit of time to heal, they can't tell you this. If your puppy has a severe problem that needs quick care from a vet, my guess is he'd let you know by his actions.

As for a local vet, i took my dog to Crawford Animal Hospital on 108th and Layton after he had a terrible reaction to a bee sting and i liked the service i got and thought the price was fair. This is the phone number if you're interested. 529-3577

Took Ollie to the Vet today and bad news...Fractured hip. So two weeks of kennel time and we go from there. If its not heeled by then he will most likely need surgery. The Vet did say that since he is young it has a good chance of heeling on his own. I'm pretty bummed. Took him to Greenfield Veterinarian Clinic on South 27th Street and they were really nice, caring and informative. Thanks all for the info.

Ive got a silky terrier. He has soo much energy its unbelievable. That said, he was terrible learning "come, stay, etc". I probably didnt train them the best, but, one time he was in big pain with his legs. We tried to wait it out, he began to lay on the ground and would drag is leg...it looked quite awkward. Took him in, he needed surgery for dislocated knee, it kept popping in and out. I guess I take him in quicker more so now then before. I think you did the right thing.
