I'm a bartender! And/or What are your bar expectations...

InsomniacInkRoss

Ah, hate to double post, but, wanted to touch on few more things.

Maker's Mark and Jameson couldn't be more different, we don't have Maker's right now, and I am lobbying to get it (or Buffalo Trace, Woodford, or Knob Creek)

We had Guinness and no one (literally no one) drank it, the bar tenders ended up drinking it all.

We have most of what was talked about, need to work on getting some Leinie's in there, but Peroni and Moretti take up cooler space, which is fine.

We have Lite, MGD, Bud Light, Spotted Cow, and Hacker Pschorr on tap. The Hacker doesn't really move, would love to put Riverwest Stein in.

In a Milwaukee bar, in one of the greatest drinking cities of America, I would expect all of the above. As a true fan of drinking, I love all of it.....except perhaps for that stuff they produce in St. Louis http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Even in a small bar you can find the right things to have a good time. Variety is key. Lovin this topic.....

Well, you definitely want beer. And wine and Spotted Cow for the non-beer drinkers.

Not to derail this thread, but why is Spotted Cow so incredibly popular? I have tried it and it's just not my "thing." There's a local bar down the road from my house, and they won't take Spotted Cow off their taps. And it's an Irish pub with only six taps (they do have Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick's, so at least they have the essentials covered). I just don't get what is so great about it.

It's an easily drinkable tasty wheat beer that isn't overly wheaty. If that makes sense.

I'm not a big fan myself, but I know many people who swear by it.

As I tell my friends who drink it, Spotted Cow is for girls and 'girl drink drunks', basically for people who 'don't like the taste of beer'. I'm not sure why... it tastes like flat swill to me. But, it's the trendy thing I guess.

I think that's pretty much it. People who don't actually like beer, but want to drink it anyway for some reason, seem to see it as a "better" option along the lines of Miller Lite or whatever.

It's not that it's trendy, it's that it's a decent beer, produced locally. Not sure why you need to rail about its femininity, that's just strange. Not my kind of beer but I would never claim some air of condescension to mock people who like it. Baldkin described perfectly why it's so popular. I like the taste of beer, and I don't dislike Spotted Cow. I just don't tend to drink/enjoy wheat beers.

No condescension necessary. Simply put, the people in Madison who would have drank Zima in 1993 now drink Spotted Cow.... generally the type that only have a beer or two, poured in a glass of course- so they can stick their pinky in the air while they drink it. Spotted Cow is definitely the trendy brew in Madison, and it is favored by the Yuppie set and served at every 'Mover and Shaker' function. You may think that it's a decent beer, and that's your opinion. Personally, I think it tastes like watered-down Grain Belt, and that's my opinion. In my opinion, it's definitely not worthy of the hype or worthy of the price tag. Going further, it may be locally produced, but there are several local microbreweries that actually brew a more 'authentic' beer.

Whatever beer you drink is your preference. There is no reason to stereotype people who drink any one kind of beer. Comments like these are what makes people call beer enthusiasts beer snobs. There is zero need to look down on people because of their beer preference.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

They've got Spotted Cow on tap at many of the country bars in my area, so I'm not sure the Yuppie stereotype is a good one.

Some people enjoy a creamy wheat beer that doesn't taste like Fruity Pebbles (I'm looking at you Sunset Wheat).

That is condecending and not at all true. I drink a variety of beers. I had 5 guinness pints after work last Friday. Split a case of highlife with a buddy on Saturday, and had a Miller Lite last night around 10.

I like Spotted Cow. I prefer several other New Glarus brews over it like Fat Squirl. But at the same time, I wouldn't make fun of anyone who likes Spotted Cow or compare it to something like Zima. I'll make fun of tasteless beer, but don't understand making fun of this. Do people just not like wheat beers?

I love trying out different Hefeweiss beers at German restaurants. I had no idea that made me less of a man or meant that I only drink 1 or 2 beers a night out of a glass. I can assure you thats not the case even though I probably am a yuppie.

Going back to Blue Moon after a Sunset Wheat reminds me of the sensation of eating cereal after drinking some orange juice.

i also drink only one or two beers at a sitting. guess i incorrectly referred to that habit as "responsible drinking." i also like my beer in a glass because it opens up the flavour and the aroma.

Yeah, the part about having to pour your beer in a glass is where RockCo's 'I am a man's man's drinker' shtick really lost me. You pour a beer in a glass because that's how good beer is supposed to be tasted.

Can't disagree with that at all. I usually leave it in the bottle just because I am less likely to spill then if I make violent hand gestures.

I don't swear by getting tap beer or always pouring my beer into a glass. But I also don't look down my nose at people that want to taste beer in the manner in which it was intended to be.

I don't look down on anybody for whatever beer they drink, that said I will rib the heck out of them. The fact is that for the price and the hype, in my opinion, Spotted Cow is just not a good beer. If I wanted to drink a 'lighter' beer, may as well just have a Miller product or anything that comes in a 30 pack cube for that matter. If I want a 'real' beer, there are several other great Wisconsin breweries that produce them, and it's frustrating to see Spotted Cow on tap at nearly every bar I go into that has something other than Miller products. May as well put 'Summer Shandy' on tap as well. I am also not looking down on those who drink 'one or two'. That said, I bet that the list of people who have polished off a 12 pack of Spotted Cow is very short. Do I think that Spotted Cow is a little feminine? I can't lie, yes I do... I also think that Corona or any of the 'lime' beers are feminine. Does that make me condescending? Probably. That said, I've probably been a little brainwashed by the thousands of High Life commercials that I've watched over the years.

I did it once at Jazz in the Park back in college.

I agree there are certain beers that I have a negative connotation about the people who drink them. At the same time if you are going to generalize you are setting yourself up for failure and to be looked at as a condecending jerk

You see a guy drinking a corona...yeah, thats strike one. Lime in it, strike two. Aviators, strike 3. Popped collar, calling his friends "brah," pecking away on his iPhone or blackberry, telling stories about how many hot girls he has got with...well then you can form your opinion.

But 2 weekends ago I was at a party and all that was left was corona. I had 2 and they were good, or at least better than nothing. I don't want to be viewed in the same group as that guy I just described. If someone wants to lump me in with them then I could really care less about that person's opinion on me or anything else for that matter.

Please stop with any and all condescending talk about beer and the like. Please do not force the closure of a really good thread.
