The new Price is Right host -- Update: It's Drew Carey

Big Reed

I heard them talking about this on ESPN radio this morning. I was not able to hear the entire story. the rumor was that Dan Patrick was actually thinking about applying to be the new Price is Right host. he definitely has the hair for the job. Last week Rosie's name was mentioned. Does this story have any truth or meat? or was Dan just joking around?

I know a lot of ESPN sportscasters have gone on to bigger and better things besides sportscasting. Joe Garagiola actually hosted a game show for a couple of years - so it's possible.

I was also thinking of bryant gumble, robin roberts and kieth Olberman as former sportcasters who have moved on to bigger and also different entertainment industry occupations.

Dan Patrick has been with ESPN a long time. He keeps getting beaten out by Bob Costas for that sports Emmy. Maybe he saw how many Emmies Bob Barker has won, and he's looking for a change of pace from sportscasting. I've noticed Patrick seems to be talking about his family a lot more now. maybe he's looking for a job with a little more stability.

or maybe it's all just a huge running joke and satiracle comment being made on ESPN about our society that we actually care and look forward to finding out who the next price is right host will be. it's kind of like Sienfeld - we give huge importance to things that don't really matter.

On his radio show today, he has said that he has been in contact to audition but he hasn't been offered anything. He has been hyping some sort of news that "will change his life" though that is supposed to be on tomorrow if I understood correctly

Man. At first, I didn't think they could make a worse choice than Mario Lopez....Then I didn't think they could get anyone more annoying than Rosie O'Donnell, but they've actually done it. Now they are to the point where the only worse option would be Keith Olberman.

Just cancel the show already. No one can fill Barker's shoes.

Gilbert Gottfried might be worse. The host would then scream more than the contestant.

Magic Johnson might be worse. But that's just because he'd stumble over his words and would probably be boring.

TPIR is an interesting job. It's strange because I can't really imagine anyone other than Barker doing it. Kilborn isn't really doing anything as far as I know. He should get that job.

Seconded. Some people don't get his schtick, but I was a huge Late Late Show fan and I think he would be great on TPIR. He was sort of a "friend of the show", as the late Rod Roddy made several guest appearances on Late Late.

well, I guess we all know what the big announcement was going to be.

patrick's words were kind of vague. he said he hopes to do something in radio, but also says he wants to do something challenging.

Sounds to me like he was offered the job ..

Come on down dan, you're the next host of the price is right.

I like Craig Killborn. I stopped watching the Daily Show when he left Comedy Central.

Wow that's like saying you stopped watching the Tonight Show when Jack Paar left...

Stewart MADE that show... with all the talent popping through there (Carrell, Colbert, Rob Corddrey, Ed Helms, etc) it's the new SNL... just covering real news stories.

Really you should tune in. You'd be surprised how much funnier it is today.

I enjoyed Craig K on ESPN, and I liked him as host of the Daily Show. But somewhere between T.D.S. and Late Late Show, he (and his shtick) really lost any likability for me. I definitely enjoy Stewart more, and I like Craig Ferguson quite a bit as well. I personally think he's (Kilborn) too swarmy for Price Is Right, but Carey would work perfectly.

And I have to disagree with you, Al, on Stewart. I think he realizes full well what impact his show has on "youthful culture". Although he always manages to remain playful regardless of the guest, he asks some very, very poignant questions of the "important" guests. The fact that he/Daily Show manage to get the guests they do get, be it politicos or actors or whatever, speaks volumes about the power and influence the show has. My only regret is that his interview sessions are too short (the whole show is for that matter). But the shows tones remain "comical", and that scores very well.

Not to turn this into a political-ish thread, but I would much prefer a Stewart interview with someone important, than say O'Really (deliberately spelled wrong) or Scarborough or just about anyone else doing the interview.

Seconded. O'Reilly's a pompous jerk who'll throw softballs to his buddies and just yell over anyone else. King is too slow and personal. Scarborough is pretty good, but I don't think he's a great interviewer, same for Cooper. I like Olbermann's show a lot, but for his commentary and not his interviewing.

The only guy besides Stewart that I really like is Matthews, but he wusses out too much IMO. I also like Maher, but his interviews can show a bit too much favoritism.
