Nashville Media Notes

McLEARY IS MONEY: Right-hander Marty McLeary will make his seventh start of the season for the Sounds tonight. The veteran right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA (4 ER / 22.1 IP) in his last four outings, tossing two quality starts over that stretch.

***

No more McLeary wisecracks from yours truly if he keeps this up, although it's nothing personal, just a desire to see Amaury Rivas get some AAA starts in before 2011. Local Huntsville fans would probably disagree.

Final: Brevard County 2, @St. Lucie 0

Brevard County box score

Darren Byrd, Dan Meadows, and Corey Frerichs outdueled Mets pitching prospect Jeurys Familia. Scott Krieger struck out three times in four trips, but the one time he didn't, he knocked it out of the park for a solo homer. I love that guy. Matt Cline was 1-2 with two walks, and Erik Komatsu was 1-4 with his 21st steal. The Manatees are now 6-3 with one game to go on their 10-game road trip.

Brevard County play-by-play

It looked like the Mets would get a run right off the bat, but Byrd bore down:

St. Lucie Bottom 1st

  • Pedro Zapata singles on a ground ball to shortstop Josh Prince.
  • Michael Fisher singles on a ground ball to right fielder Scott Krieger. Pedro Zapata to 3rd.
  • Wilmer Flores pops out to third baseman Peter Fatse in foul territory.
  • Stefan Welch pops out to third baseman Peter Fatse in foul territory.
  • Juan Lagares strikes out swinging.

They tried again in next inning but still couldn't get a run in:

St. Lucie Bottom 2nd

  • Rafael Fernandez grounds out, second baseman Matt Cline to first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Hector Pellot doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Scott Krieger.
  • Richard Lucas reaches on fielding error by second baseman Matt Cline. Hector Pellot to 3rd.
  • With
Jean Luc Blaquiere batting, Hector Pellot caught stealing home, catcher
Sean McCraw to second baseman Matt Cline to catcher Sean McCraw,
    Richard Lucas to 2nd.
  • Jean Luc Blaquiere flies out to center fielder Erik Komatsu.

Josh Prince got a little greedy here leading off the 5th:

Brevard County Top 5th

  • Josh Prince singles on a ground ball to center fielder Juan Lagares.
  • With Peter Fatse batting, Josh Prince steals (36) 2nd base.
  • With Peter Fatse batting, Josh Prince caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Jean Luc Blaquiere to third baseman Richard Lucas.

Mets Shutout By Manatees

Matt Gagnon, St. Lucie Mets

The St. Lucie Mets offensive woes continued Tuesday night at Digital Domain Park. The 2-0 loss at the hands of the visiting Brevard County Manatees was the Mets seventh consecutive loss and drops them to 17-15 on the second half of the season, a full game out of first place in the FSL South Division.

Jeurys Familia took the hard luck loss on the night. Familia came into the game with a 2-6 record and 6.38 ERA over his first sixteen starts. Tuesday was Familia's best outing of the season tossing six solid innings allowing only two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts while only walking two batters. Sean McCraw doubled in a run off Familia in the second inning and Scott Krieger hit a solo home run off of Familia in the fourth inning accounting for the only two runs of the game.

The Mets batters just could not put together a rally. St. Lucie had opportunities early but could not get the timely hit to drive in the runs. Of the five Mets hits, Hector Pellot had two and Pedro Zapata, Michael Fisher and Wilmer Flores each had one.

The Mets look to snap their seven game losing streak Wednesday night at Digital Domain Park against the visiting Brevard County Manatees. Brad Holt will toe the rubber for the Mets. Holt comes into the game with a 2-3 record and an ERA of 6.00 in his six starts with the Mets this year.

Final: @Nashville 16, Omaha 2

Sounds blow out Royals in series opener

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Right-hander Marty McLeary continued his recent dominance on the hill and was backed by the Sounds' highest run total in six seasons in Nashville's 16-2 rout of the division-rival Omaha Royals on Tuesday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

McLeary (5-6) hurled 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing only four hits while striking out nine batters to pick up his fifth win in seven outings for Nashville.

In his last five starts, the veteran has posted a 4-0 record and 1.21 ERA (4er/29.2ip).

McLeary's nine strikeouts in the contest matched the most by a Sounds starter all season. Doug Davis previously fanned nine in a rehab start on June 24 in Memphis.

The 16 runs scored by the Sounds were the club's most in six years, dating back to a 16-13 win in Oklahoma City on April 20, 2005.

Nashville posted 17 hits on the night, including three-hit efforts by each of their 3-4-5-6 hitters (Mat Gamel, Brendan Katin, Joe Koshansky, Erick Almonte). Gamel and Almonte each drove in four runs in the contest.

The victory was the fifth in the last six games for Nashville (56-47) and was the club's fourth straight win over the Royals.

The Sounds jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead against Omaha right-hander Luis Mendoza. Katin provided the big hit of the frame when he belted a two-out, two-run homer to left, his 14th longball of the season. Almonte (3-for-4) plated the other run of the inning with a two-out RBI double to bring home Koshansky.

Nashville increased its lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth off Mendoza. Katin drew an inning-opening walk and scored two batters later on an Almonte double to left. The second run scored in unearned fashion following a two-out fielding error by Royals shortstop Ed Lucas.

The Sounds put the game out of reach in the seventh with a six-run outburst against the Omaha bullpen. Two of the runs came courtesy of Almonte's third double of the night - a two-run two-bagger off Manauris Baez that struck the top-middle portion of the 24-foot high batter's eye in dead center. Adam Stern and Ray Olmedo contributed RBI singles later in the frame before Gamel drove in a pair with a two-out single of his own.

Gamel (3-for-6) and second baseman Eric Farris (2-for-4) each extended their longest hit streaks of the year to 11 games.

Omaha first baseman Kila Ka'aihue broke up the Sounds' shutout bid in the top of the eighth when he crushed a two-run homer to right-center off Mitch Stetter, the slugger's team-leading 23rd roundtripper of the year.

Royals designated hitter Scott Thorman took the hill for the visitors in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the first pitching appearance of his 11-year professional career and it played out as one would expect.

Nashville wrapped up its scoring with a five-run frame against Thorman, highlighted by two-run singles off the bats of Lorenzo Cain and Gamel.

Mendoza (5-8) took the loss for Omaha after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over his six innings of work.

Catcher Martin Maldonado had his team-best 13-game streak come to a close with an 0-for-3 effort on the night for the Sounds.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Wednesday night. Left-hander Sam Narron (6-3, 3.61), who has won each of his last five starts, will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Omaha southpaw Blaine Hardy (2-3, 2.03).

Nashville box score

Nice game. I think just about everyone on the roster got a mention in that recap. Gamel is now hitting .300/.383/.468. Cain's hit is credited as a double in the box score, and he also walked three times, so that's awesome. The Sounds in total drew nine walks, so that's 26 baserunners. No wonder they scored 16 runs. Stetter's had a rough year in AAA; it must be tough for him to be down there after spending all of last year in MLB.

Nashville play-by-play

All three of Gamel's singles were line drives.

Final: @DSL Brewers 7, DSL Athletics 5

DSL Brewers box score

The Brewers scored three in the 7th and two in the 8th to get the victory. Raul Mondesi, Jr.'s coming on strong of late. A day after smacking his first pro triple and homer, Mondesi went 4-5 with a double. Mondesi doesn't turn 18 until 8/23. Ronny Puello was 2-4 with a double and a walk, Andres Martinez was 2-4, Jose Pena was 1-3 with a walk, and Carlos Pena walked twice. Eduard Reyes started and allowed two unearned runs in five innings; Eliezer Montano was the beneficiary of the Brewers' comeback, picking up the win despite allowing two runs (one earned) in 2.2 innings.

DSL Brewers play-by-play

Either they like to put on two-out suicide squeezes in the DSL or they just like to try straight steals of home, but this has happened a lot recently:

DSL Athletics Top 2nd

  • Diego Ledezma flies out to center fielder Ruben Sanchez.
  • Charli Blanco reaches on fielding error by second baseman Yonki Hernandez.
  • With Dionisio Ramirez batting, Charli Blanco steals (3) 2nd base.
  • With Dionisio Ramirez batting, throwing error by Eduard Reyes on the pickoff attempt, Charli Blanco to 3rd.
  • Dionisio Ramirez walks.
  • Anderson De La Rosa walks. Dionisio Ramirez to 2nd.
  • Alfredo
Sosa grounds into a force out, shortstop Andres Martinez to second
baseman Yonki Hernandez. Charli Blanco scores. Dionisio Ramirez to
3rd. Anderson De La Rosa out at 2nd. Alfredo Sosa to 1st.
  • With
Franklin Contreras batting, Dionisio Ramirez caught stealing home,
catcher Carlos Pena to second baseman Yonki Hernandez to catcher Carlos
    Pena.

The Brewers sent nine men to the plate in the 7th. Nothing like a good old bases-loaded balk:

DSL Brewers Bottom 7th

  • Yonki Hernandez grounds out, shortstop Wilfredo Solano to first baseman Michael Soto.
  • Ruben Sanchez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Charli Blanco.
  • Raul MondesiJr. doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Charli Blanco. Ruben Sanchez scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Victor Trinidad replaces William Bautista.
  • Hitaniel Arias hit by pitch.
  • Ronny Puello singles on a ground ball to center fielder Charli Blanco. Raul MondesiJr. scores. Hitaniel Arias to 2nd.
  • Jose Pena walks. Hitaniel Arias to 3rd. Ronny Puello to 2nd.
  • With
Carlos Pena batting, Hitaniel Arias scores on a balk. Ronny Puello
advances to 3rd on a balk. Jose Pena advances to 2nd on a balk.
  • Carlos Pena walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Cristhian Perez replaces Victor Trinidad.
  • Andres Martinez called out on strikes.
  • Jorge

AZL Brewers box score

The Reds' organization really did a number on the Brewers' today. Brooks Hall got hammered: 2.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HR, and Jose Sanchez and Kevin Shackelford didn't fare any better. The Reds had 20 hits, while the Brewers had just four, Tyler Roberts' double being the most notable. Jody Gerut was 0-1 with a walk before leaving in the 6th. Max Walla was 0-3 with three strikeouts.

Hall actually turned in a scoreless 1st before it all went to hell:

Final: Helena 6, @Orem 3

Helena box score

We heard about Tyler Cravy's potential at the beginning of the year, and he may be figuring out how to use his stuff; he's struck out 16 and walked four in his last 13.2 innings. Tonight he tossed five frames, allowing two runs (one earned). The Brewers were shut out while Cravy was on the mound; however, they got one in the 6th and erupted for five more in the 7th. That made a winner out of Tony Butler in what turned out to be his last appearance before heading to Wisconsin. The fearsome duo of Eric Marzec and Brian Garman finished out the game; they've allowed one earned run between them in 27 innings at Helena, though Marzec has let in five unearned runs, including one tonight, and Garman three. Garman in particular has been dominant: 27 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. Robbie Garvey went 3-5 and clouted his first professional home run; congratulations, Robbie. Every other member of the starting lineup had exactly one hit, except Shea Vucinich, who walked and was hit by two pitches.

Helena play-by-play

  • Gregory Hopkins singles on a line drive to center fielder Travis Witherspoon.
  • Michael Walker singles on a line drive to left fielder Daniel Eichelberger. Gregory Hopkins to 2nd.

  • Brandon Sizemore flies out to right fielder Kole Calhoun.

Brewers comeback downs Owlz

Neil K. Warner/Daily Herald

The Helena Brewers weren't having much luck with Orem Owlz starting pitcher Pill Joon Jang.

Through five innings all that Helena had to show for their at-bats was a big fat zero.

But when the Brewers got Jang out of the game, their fortunes turned.

Helena used a five-run seventh inning to spoil a great outing from Jang on Tuesday night to help the Brewers beat Orem 6-3.

"Jang did a nice job. He made one mistake on a breaking ball to a left-handed hitter," said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. "He changed his speeds really good tonight. He threw some breaking balls in fastball counts. That's his second good outing in a row, I'm very happy with that."

The win helped Helena take two out of three from Orem. Both teams now share the same record at 18-18. Helena was led by leadoff hitter Robbie Garvey, who went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs. Jang gave up three hits through five plus innings and struck out four.

Behind Jang, Orem built a 2-0 lead. The Owlz scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wes Hatton singled to lead off the inning. Orem then caught a break when Kole Calhoun hit a comebacker to Helena pitcher Tyler Cravy, but he bobbled the ball and everyone was safe. Brandon Decker then lined out, but the inning continued when Thomas Nichols then singled in a run. Daniel Eichelberger also hit an RBI siingle to grab a 2-0 lead.

Orem's offense then fizzled and the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. In the sixth, Garvey hit his first professional home run to right field off Jang. After giving up the solo shot, Jang then walked Shea Vucinich and was then replaced by Dakota Robinson, who got Cody Hawn to roll into double play to end the inning.

Helena then broke the game open in the seventh. Gregory Hopkins started things off for the Brewers with a leadoff single. Mike Walker followed with a single and John Dishon walked to load the bases.

Robinson got Brandon Sizemore to hit a shallow fly ball to Calhoun in right field, which was not nearly deep enough to score the run, but Brent Dean followed with a deep fly ball to center that drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Carlos George added an RBI single. Garvey then singled in another run which set up the big hit, a Hawn single that plated two more runs and gave Helena a 6-2 lead.

Orem got a run back in the eighth when Hatton walked to leadoff the inning. He scored on a ground ball from Decker, but that's all the offense the Owlz could produce. They finished with just four hits. Three Helena relievers combined to no-hit the Owlz over the final four innings to end another disappointing night at the plate for a team that is last in the Pioneer League in batting with a .254 team batting average.

"We got four hits. It's unacceptable the way we're playing and honestly I don't have lot of answers," Kotchman said. "All you've got to do is look at the stats and see where we're last in. We've struck out the most, that's alarming. Our consistent players have been in the outfield. Our outfield play has been outstanding. Other than that the other positions are wide open."

Both teams will have a rare day off today before finishing up the first-half of the season. Orem will play at Casper on Thursday will Helena will host Great Falls on Thursday.
