Notice that Helena has been eliminated from the first-half title. Never would have guessed that after that first week. Half the teams make the Pioneer League playoffs, and hopefully it won't be a (3rd year, I believe) without for the H-Crew.

Technically, Huntsville is tied for first, since leader Tennessee already won the 1st half race.

The Arizona and Dominican are full-season summer leagues (non-split).

According to the Baseball Almanac website, a player has had two triples in one inning only 11 times in MLB history. The last time was in 2006 and before that, the next most recent time was 1951.

Obviously, Cain accomplished it in AAA, but I thought it was worth noting.

Final: Nashville 12, @Albuquerque 6

Sounds take finale from Isotopes, 12-6

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds powered past the Albuquerque Isotopes, 12-6, on Monday afternoon at Isotopes Park in the finale of a four-game set.

With the victory, Nashville (55-47) splits the season series with Albuquerque, 8-8, for the second consecutive season.

The Sounds erupted for seven runs in the opening frame as the Sounds batted around for the sixth time this year, highlighted by outfielder Lorenzo Cain hitting two triples off Albuquerque starter Alberto Bastardo in the same inning.

Cain led off the contest with his first triple to right field and scored the first run on a Norris Hopper RBI single in the next at-bat. Bastardo then offered up a two-run home run to Joe Koshansky over the right field wall for a 3-0 lead. Koshansky's homer was his team-leading 17th of the season and his second straight game with a long ball.

Bastardo then allowed three consecutive singles to Nashville, as catcher Martin Maldonado extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI base hit to center to score Ray Olmedo. After a Chase Wright walk, Cain smacked a two-out bases-clearing triple to center for a 7-0 Sounds advantage.

Cain's accomplishment marked the fourth time that any player in the minor leagues has recorded two triples in the same inning since 2005: Peter Bourjos of the Rookie Orem Owlz in 2006, Dayton Buller of the Double-A Connecticut Defenders in 2007, and Carl Uhl of the Single-A Williamsport Crosscutters in 2009.

It was also the 11th time in Sounds history a player has tripled twice in a game, as Dave Krynzel was the last to do so on April 16, 2006 vs. the Oklahoma RedHawks.

Former Sounds outfielder Trent Oeltjen doubled to begin the next frame for Albuquerque and later scored on a Jay Gibbons RBI single to put the Isotopes on the board.

Nashville added a run in the next inning for an 8-1 lead. Brendan Katin was hit a Bastardo pitch, moved to second on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on an Olmedo single, and then came home on an Eric Farris infield groundout.

Nashville scored two more runs in the next inning as Cain singled to begin the Nashville third and advanced on to third on an Albuquerque fielding error. Mat Gamel recorded an RBI for the eighth straight contest by driving home Cain from third with a line drive base hit, followed by Nashville's 10th run of the contest coming on a Jesus Rodriguez wild pitch that allowed Hopper to score.

The Isotopes plated three runs on four hits in the next frame to come within six runs with RBIs from Justin Sellers, Gibbons, and Jamie Hoffmann.

The Sounds got a run back in the top of the fifth inning as the club recorded three consecutive base hits off reliever Josh Lindblom. Hopper singled to center to lead off, moved to second on a Gamel base hit, and came home on a Katin RBI base knock.

Albuquerque scored its final two runs in the next frame from RBI doubles from Lucas May and Oeltjen.

Maldonado scored Nashville's 12th run on a two-out solo homer in the top of the eighth inning. The Sounds catcher belted the first pitch he saw from Ramon Troncoso for his third long ball of the season.

Sounds starter Chase Wright (7-6) got the win, allowing six runs while scattering 11 hits with five strikeouts over five innings thrown. In his fourth rehab appearance for the Brewers, reliever LaTroy Hawkins gave up two hits in two scoreless innings. Donovan Hand also threw a scoreless frame in relief.

Bastardo (4-2) was roughed up for eight runs (four earned) on six hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched to take the loss for the Isotopes.

Farris and Gamel each added two hits to extend their identical hitting-streaks to 10 games.

The Sounds travel back to Music City to open an eight-game homestand, beginning at 7:05 pm CT tomorrow evening at historic Greer Stadium against the division-rival Omaha Royals. Right-hander Marty McLeary (4-6, 8.13) takes the mound for Nashville against Omaha right-hander Luis Mendoza (5-7, 4.97).

How about that Lorenzo Cain? You can listen to Stu call the second triple: "Two triples, and I repeat, two triples in one inning for Lorenzo Cain!" Cain also added a walk to go with his three hits. Also, how crazy is it that Dayton Buller of all people is one of the few recently minor leaguers to accomplish the same feat? Hawkins struck out none and walked none, throwing 21 of his 28 pitches for strikes. It's strange looking at the line score and seeing that the home team, trailing, didn't get to bat in the bottom of the 9th.

It's almost like the rain waited for Cain to take a curtain call before closing in. This is how the game ended:

Final (game one): @South Bend 4, Wisconsin 3 (7 innings)

Hawks swoop in for game one win

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

SOUTH BEND, IN – David Nick’s two run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the South Bend Silver Hawks a lead they would not give up. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Silver Hawks traded the lead three times before the decisive homer by Nick in game one of a doubleheader on Monday night at Coveleski Stadium.

Wisconsin (40-57 overall, 14-15 second half) scored in the first inning. Scooter Gennett singled with one out. Kentrail Davis followed with a double off the left field wall and the Rattlers were up 1-0. There was a chance for more. Chris Dennis singled to right with two outs and Davis was waved home, but the throw to the plate just got Davis for the final out.

Rattlers starting pitcher Nick Bucci cruised through the first three innings. But, he ran into trouble in the fourth. Nick tripled off the top of the wall in left field. A one out walk to Matt Davidson put runners at the corners. A wild pitch by Bucci moved Davidson into scoring position. Bucci got the second out on a liner to third. However, the first pitch to Errol Hollinger crossed up catcher Cameron Garfield and it went as a passed ball to allow Nick to score the tying run. Later, Hollinger lined a 3-2 pitch to center to knock in Davidson to give the Silver Hawks (41-55, 11-17) a 2-1 lead.

That lead did not last long. South Bend starting pitcher Mike Belfiore walked the first two Rattlers of the top of the fifth inning. Wisconsin had only moved the runners to second and third with two outs. D’Vontrey Richardson stepped to the plate and sent a high chopper to short. The speedy center fielder hustled down the line and forced a hurried throw that pulled the first baseman off the bag. Both runners scored and the Rattlers were back in front 3-2.

Bucci got the first two outs of the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Bucci walked Keon Broxton to bring Nick back to the plate. The South Bend second baseman hit one over the wall in left for a two-run homer and a 4-3 Silver Hawks lead.

Kevin Munson, a 4th round pick out of James Madison, got the final out of the top of the fifth inning and worked a 1-2-3 top of the sixth. He picked up his first professional win when Yonata Ortega struck out three Rattlers in order in the top of the seventh to end the game. The save for Ortega was his 21st of the season.

Wisconsin box score

Bucci's line: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2/6 GO/AO, 76 pitches, 49 strikes. Matt Costello worked the last inning. Richardson is now 0 for his last 19. He does get some points for putting the ball in play during the at-bat Chris highlighted above; he'd struck out twice already in the game and at a ferocious pace in general this season. As to how the runner from second was able to score on the play, the South Bend first baseman came down awkwardly, twisting his ankle and landing in a heap, and was thus unable to get anything on his throw. Gennett finished 1-2 with the walk, the only Rattler on base more than once, and his one out was a long fly ball to the track that Mehring though had a shot to get out. Nice to see Garfield draw another walk.

Final, Game One: @DSL Mariners 3, DSL Brewers 1, seven innings as scheduled

DSL Brewers Game One Box Score

Both starters had perfect games through four innings and each went the distance in what surely is the briefest game in terms of time in Link Report history, remarkable even for the abbreviated doubleheader length -- one hour, fifteen minutes! The Mariners have a 16-year-old 6'4" lefty named Brandol Perez (stats) -- he allowed his very first earned run of the season today and now has an ERA of 0.35 after his first 25.2 professional innings; 18-year-old Brewer RHP Jeffrey Saba is no slouch and has shown a flash of brilliance this summer when on, and this was his second complete game in three starts (this one six innings as the Brewers were the losing road team) -- Saba allowed only four hits and one walk (one of the three runs was unearned); this was Saba's first appearance in two weeks given all the rainouts as of late...

CF Ruben Sanchez got his average back up to .300 and his OPS over .800 with a 1-for-3 effort (double) -- the 18-year-old has been the team's most impressive player stat-wise thus far; LF Ronny Puello had two hits, one driving in the lone Brewer run; RF Raul Mondesi, Jr. had the only other safety for the D-Crew, but committed a costly throwing error -- many of you will remember his dad's amazing arm; 1B Hitaniel Arias was 0-for-3, Jose Pena was 0-for-2 as the DH, and OF Jose Garcia did not play -- still waiting for the production to match the hype on those three youngsters; 3B Juan De Leon will probably be the biggest beneficiary in terms of playing time given the three DSL suspensions you're read about elsewhere on the forum here -- he was sharing time with Allixon Cequea...

DSL Brewers Game One Game Log

One of the easiest game logs to review you'll ever see; Brewers scored their run in the final inning, and had the tying run on base when it was said and done...

DSL Brewers Top 7th

  • Ruben Sanchez doubles (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Randy Perez.
  • Juan De Leon grounds out, third baseman Luis Matias to first baseman Westlonder Marcelino.
  • Hitaniel Arias flies out to left fielder Estarlyn Morales.
  • Ronny Puello singles on a ground ball to center fielder Randy Perez. Ruben Sanchez scores.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Joan Abreu replaces Ronny Puello.
  • Raul Mondesi Jr. singles on a ground ball to center fielder Randy Perez. Joan Abreu to 2nd.

Peralta with a very nice debut in Huntsville. That is going to be a fun staff to watch with Rivas, Rogers and now Peralta and Jeffress! As impressive as the two triples in one inning by Cain is, how about Lawrie with his 13th triple tonight. He is on pace for close to 20 this year!

Final, Game Two: Wisconsin 4, @South Bend (Diamondbacks) 3, seven innings as scheduled

CLUTCH HITS GET RATTLERS A DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

Chris Mehring, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

SOUTH BEND, IN - Michael Marseco and D'Vontrey Richardson each delivered two-out RBI doubles in the top of the seventh inning to provide the winning margin in the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday evening at Coveleski Stadium. The clutch hits made a winner out of Wisconsin pitcher Hiram Burgos, who was making his first Midwest League start. The win got the Rattlers back to .500 on the second half of the season, earned them a split in the doubleheader, and gave them a series win over the Silver Hawks

Chris Dennis started the scoring with a line drive home run to right field with one out in the top of the second inning. Later in the inning, Austin Stockfisch singled in a run and Wisconsin (41-57 overall, 15-15 second half) led 2-0.

Burgos was sailing along, but he got into a spot of trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning after David Nick singled and Bobby Borchering doubled to put runners on second and third with none out. A sacrifice fly by Matt Davidson got a run home, but that was all the Hawks got in the fourth.

In the fifth, Matt Helm lined the first pitch to the gap in right-center. Right fielder Kentrail Davis made a long run and had the ball in his glove, but he could not control it and the ball slipped out as he fell to the warning track. Helm wound up at second base. Tyson Van Winkle went to the plate to drop a sacrifice bunt, but he got much more.

The bunt went down the third base line. Burgos fielded the ball and threw wildly to first. The ball rolled into the South Bend bullpen and Helm scored the tying run. Van Winkle made it around to third base with no outs. But, Burgos would strand Van Winkle there and the game went to the sixth inning tied 2-2.

The Rattlers got a leadoff single from Cutter Dykstra in the top of the seventh and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. But, Dykstra got caught in a rundown between second and third on a grounder back to mound off the bat of Stockfisch. Dykstra was out and Stockfisch was standing on first with two outs. A wild pitch moved Stockfisch to second base. Then, Marseco caught the Silver Hawks off guard by lining a 2-0 pitch over the head of the left fielder for a double to score Stockfisch with the go ahead run.

Richardson broke an extended slump with a line drive to the gap in right-center to send Marseco home with an insurance run.

Jon Pokorny came on to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning and retired the first two batters. But, a single by Victor Estevez extended the game. Estevez took second on defensive indifference and scored on a single by Keon Broxton to bring Nick to the plate as the winning run.

Nick hit a two-run homer in the first game of the doubleheader that provided the winning margin for South Bend. But the Wisconsin closer did not mess around with Nick. Pokorny struck out Nick on three pitches for his tenth save of the season.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday in Illinois against the Peoria Chiefs. Game time at O'Brien Field is 7:00 PM. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280 WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40 PM.

Wisconsin Game Two Box Score

It's games like this where you just could kick MiLB.com in the gut for not providing archived audio like back in '08. You can just taste the tension within Chris' write-up -- wow. Michael Marseco was 0-for-5 in the doubleheader prior to muscling that ball to left -- can't you just hear an "oh, ___!" from the outfielder on that one; how about Cutter Dykstra leading things off in the final inning with his base hit -- 2-for-3 in the contest; Chris Dennis is one strong kid; RHP Hiram Burgos had made ten relief appearances with the Rattlers through May 15th -- this return and starting nod was a necessary step, as Burgos surprisingly turns 23 next week; southpaw closer Jon Pokorny, rightfully part of a Power 50 discussion here this week, runs his ridiculous ratio to 66 K's vs. 15 BB's in 45.1 innings...

MiLB.com threw me off by placing an asterisk in their Pioneer League standings -- this from the Voice of the H-Crew, Steve Wendt:

Just wanted to let you know that Helena still has playoff breath left in its lungs...not much though. We are three back with four left to play. We however play Great Falls the final two games of the half. So, we're in a hole, but still have a chance at the first half title.

Unfortunately, tonight's results thus far, barring a miraculous Helena comeback, make this a moot point.

DSL Brewers Game Two Box Score

Swept away; all four Brewer hurlers either allowed a run or an inherited runner to score as the Mariners scored in five of seven frames, combining to walk seven and hit a batter; it was a miserable 3rd professional game for catcher Deivi Mejia as all seven Mariner stolen base attempts were successful and he also had two passed balls, one which directly led to a run; there was clean defense otherwise from the club, but that kind of opponent running game is tough to overcome...

After 27 games exclusively behind the plate, Carlos Pena played right field and smacked his 2nd home run; Raul Mondesi, Jr. hit his first pro HR in the 1st and then tripled two innings later -- the Brewers have quite the history of "legacy" players both at the major and minor league level this past decade, it'd be something if young Mr. Mondesi really makes his mark the next few years; 19-year-old switch-hitting 2B Yonki Hernandez might be hitting .210, but the leadoff man sports a .379 OBP -- he walked and was hit by two pitches here...

Dominguez walk-off single lifts Suns over Huntsville

J.P. Shadrick/Jacksonville Suns

Jacksonville, Fla. - In a game that featured 26 combined runners left on base, Matt Dominguez scored Lorenzo Scott from second base with a ninth inning single, sending the Jacksonville Suns (57-44, 17-14) to their sixth walk-off win of the season, for a 2-1 final over the Huntsville Stars (49-52, 16-15) in front of 5,283 Monday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Suns reliever Jose Ceda (3-0) picked up the winning decision, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. Stars reliever Lucas Luetge (1-2) fell in the loss after being charged with the game-winning run.

Huntsville and Jacksonville traded second inning runs. Chris Nowak led off the top of the second with a first pitch double off Suns starter Andrew Miller. Lee Haydel later singled Nowak in for a 1-0 score. In the bottom of the inning Tim Torres followed a double-play groundout with a single and scored on a John Otness double to left-centerfield for a 1-1 deadlock.

Andrew Miller allowed one run with five hits, five walks and six strikeouts over five and two-thirds innings without factoring in the decision.

Huntsville left 13 runners on base, including bases loaded in the second and fifth innings. Huntsville finished 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Jacksonville opened the ninth inning with a Lorenzo Scott single. Ryan Curry then sacrificed Scott to second base before an intentional walk of Vinny Rottino. Reliever Robert Hinton entered from the bullpen and allowed a Matt Dominguez single to centerfield, bringing in Scott from second base just ahead of center fielder Caleb Gindl's throw to the plate for the 2-1 win.

Suns RH Jeff Allison will face Carolina Mudcats LH Travis Webb in game one of the series at Five County Stadium on Wednesday July 28. Live radio coverage will be available on WFXJ-AM 930 and online at jaxsuns.com.

Huntsville box score

Wily Peralta's AA debut went decently: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 6/5 GO/AO, 91 pitches, strikes. As you can tell from the walks and the percentage of strikes, Peralta struggled with his control, but hopefully that was just debut jitters. Chad Anderson said Peralta was sitting 92-93 in the 1st inning and hitting 96. Lee Haydel had the best night, 3-3 with a walk and two steals. Brett Lawrie was 1-4 with an intentional walk and his league-leading 13th triple. Caleb Gindl doubled once in five trips, and Taylor Green took the collar.

  • Chuck Caufield grounds out, third baseman Matt Dominguez to first baseman Jason Delaney.

Lawrie hit the ball hard a couple other times besides his triple, grounding out sharply to the pitcher once (Anderson described it as a "look what I found" type of play where the pitcher throws his glove up just to protect himself) and lining out another.

Stars miss multiple opportunities, fall to Suns

Aaron Morse/Huntsville Stars

Matt Dominguez hit a walk-off single in the ninth as the Jacksonville Suns (17-14, 57-44) edged the Huntsville Stars (16-15, 49-52) by a final score of 2-1 Monday night.

Huntsville left 13 men on base in the contest and the Stars were only 2-19 with runners in scoring position.

The lack of production wasted a great Double-A debut from Wily Peralta as he went six innings, scattering six hits, giving up a lone run while walking four and striking out five.

The Stars got on the board first in the second inning. Chris Nowak led-off with a double. One out later Chuckie Caufield drew a walk. That’s when Lee Haydel came up big with a RBI single to give Huntsville the 1-0 lead (audio).

But the Suns responded right away against Peralta in the bottom half of the frame. With two away Tim Torres singled to center and John Otness doubled him home. The play at the plate was very close but Torres just slid in under Anderson De La Rosa’s tag to even things at one (audio).

Neither team scored again until the ninth, but it’s not like the Stars didn’t have their fair share of chances. In fact, they got a runner in scoring position every inning from there on out with the exception of the ninth, yet they were unable to score. Perhaps their best opportunity came in the fifth when they couldn’t take advantage of a lead-off triple off the bat of Brett Lawrie.

The Suns finally made the Stars pay in the ninth against Lucas Luetge (1-2) and Robert Hinton. Lorenzo Scott singled off Luetge to start the inning. Ryan Curry bunted him over to second and the Stars decided to intentionally walk Vinny Rottino. Mike Guerrero called on Hinton to try and get Southern League All-Star Game MVP Matt Dominguez out. He was unable to as Dominguez singled up the middle, driving in Scott for the walk-off win (audio).

With the loss, the Stars fall to two games back of the Tennessee Smokies in the north division.

The Stars are off Tuesday before returning to Joe Davis Stadium on Wednesday to open a 10-game home stand. The Mississippi Braves are in town and you can hear all the action on www.huntsvillestars.com. First pitch on Wednesday is at 7:00 PM central time.

Final: @Orem 10, Helena 2

Owlz bats Brew up win

Orem Owlz

After two games of struggling bats the Owlz found their offense in a 10-2 victory over the Helena Brewers on Monday night.

The Owlz would jump on the Brewers by putting up 8 of their runs in the first four innings. Andrew Heid led off the first inning with a single and after a stolen base and Travis Witherspoon's single to move Heid to third, Kole Calhoun drove in Heid with a sacrifice fly.

The second inning saw Rolando Gomez hit a solo home run off of the top of the scoreboard in right-center field. The five-foot seven Gomez has now hit three home runs on the season.

"I'm short and quick to the ball. I use legs and hips to generate my power. As you can see, I'm not that big," said Gomez.

The Owlz would double their lead to four in the bottom of the third after a two out, two-run home run by Thomas Nichols.

"Nichols comes up with two strikes and two outs and hits a two run homer. That was large," Owlz manager Tom Kotchman said. "One of the biggest hits tonight."

Orem would keep up the doubling trend plating another 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ricky Alvarez started off the inning with a double and was moved over to third on an Andrew Oldfield sacrifice bunt. Alvarez would score on a Heid sac fly the next at-bat. A walk for Travis Witherspoon would chase starting pitcher Stosh Wawrzasek. Reliever Robert Currie would walk Calhoun and Brandon Decker would drive in both Witherspoon and Calhoun on a hard hit double down the right field line. A Nichols single to right in the next at-bat would plate Decker for the fourth run of the inning.

The only runs for Helena would come in the top of the fifth off of Owlz starter Max Russell. Helena would string together 4 consecutive hits to start the inning to put their two runs on the scoreboard. With men on second and third, and the Brewers looking to chip further into the Owlz lead, Russell would shut down that threat getting a fly-out and back to back strikeouts to end the inning.

"When [Russell] gave up the two runs, and he had men on second and third and nobody out, he put it in another gear to get out of that inning with no more runs being scored," said Kotchman.

Russell would leave after the fifth inning and be replaced by Bryant George. In keeping with the recent trend the bullpen was stellar again. George would pitch three scoreless innings only giving up four hits and striking out two.

Four walks and a hit batter would give the Owlz the last two runs of the game in the bottom of the 8th.

Carmine Giardina would pitch the ninth giving up two hits but would strand both runners to end the game.

The final game of this series with the Brewers is tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. This is the final game of the seven game home stand before the team hits the road for four games in Casper and Idaho Falls.

Helena box score

Ouch. Wawrzasek allowed six runs in 3.2 innings, and Thomas Keeling's control continues to be mostly rumor, as he walked three of the four batters he faced at hit the other, two of home came in to score. Keeling has barely recorded more outs than walks, having handed out 19 free passes in 6.2 innings to start his career. The diamond in the rough is Austin Ross's sterling relief outing, three perfect innings with four strikeouts. The Brewers tallied 11 hits and were very democratic about it: no one had more than two, and only Franklin Romero went hitless. Unfortunately, only two of the 11 hits were for extra bases, and they drew no walks.
